3 I&C Maintenance / LCM The Problem Existing systems to be maintained long past normal availability of vendor support Replacement systems will require life-cycle planning for eventual replacement as well. Maintenance & life-cycle management is here to stay 3

4 I&C Maintenance / LCM Interest Group Why EPRI? Or why ANOTHER I&C maintenance group??? EPRI senior utility advisors in January 2009 challenged effectiveness of our involvement in circuit cards INPO analyzed OE indicates continued problems (2008 INPO scram report (AD )) Not just circuit cards PM for power supplies, connectors, cables, etc. Later digital systems maintenance (observed shortfall in INPO TR-64; EPRI ) EPRI can provide coordination across industry EPRI Sweet Spot - non-vendor specific, generic component issues is focus (and fill gaps where no vendor support). 4

5 I&C Maintenance / LCM Interest Group Deliverables 2 meetings per year with materials (pre & post) Discuss the good, bad & ugly of current practices Best practice documents e.g. card program management. Implementation guidelines e.g. how to set up a rebuild lab Operating experience / lessons learned analysis Database creation e.g. circuit card OE This will be YOUR group - what else would you like? 5

Equipment reliability coordinators concerned about component performance. Design engineers responsible for re-engineering components or parts. Procurement engineers responsible for obtaining reengineered components or parts. Vendors, A/Es, craft Big tent 6

8 I&C Modernization The Problem Digital upgrades often involve unplanned costs and delays due to problems with: Unanticipated behaviors of digital equipment Software verification and validation (V&V) Configuration management Evaluation of failure modes and effects Testing Commercial grade dedication (COTS) Inadequate vendor oversight Inadequate processes and knowledge transfer at both utilities and vendors 8

Address non-vendor-specific, generic issues Develop consensus solutions and tech-transfer Leverage existing guidance and training on key technical, regulatory issues, e.g.: Licensing V&V EMI Human factors Requirements engineering Digital operating experience (OE) Links to EPRI base research program Independent technical team Risk methods COTS 9

10 I&C Modernization Interest Group Proposed Approach Two meetings per year - forum to address problems and solutions Each meeting dedicated to one or two specific issues Participants drive the activities and products: Select meeting topics Share experiences, lessons learned Issues that need improved guidance Candidate technical solutions Technical transfer approaches / attributes / requirements for new guidance to ensure usefulness EPRI team develops / refines guidance and training materials to meet Interest Group needs 10

Engineers responsible for tasks such as: Ensuring high reliability of plant digital I&C systems Updating utility processes for digital Developing specifications for upgrades Evaluating digital systems for critical applications Interfacing with suppliers and system integrators Designing and implementing digital upgrades Investigating digital events, root-cause evaluation 11

13 I&C Monitoring The Problem Nuclear plant equipment monitoring programs have developed to a point that a separate interest group is needed to support their specific program requirements There is substantial interest. 13

14 I&C Monitoring Interest Group The Approach Meets concurrent with EPRI Generation sector Fleet-wide Monitoring Interest Group Builds upon cross sector program success Take s advantage of technical and organizational parallels Provides a dedicated forum for nuclear based monitoring programs Exchange specialized experiences and provide input to group priorities and research activities Provides opportunities to participate in project research activities Deliverables Administrative, organizational and management resources to hold two technical conferences each year Technology transfer though information and experience exchange between program developers, researchers, end users, EPRI, and Deliverables commercial suppliers 14
