8 Managed Production Workload for C&P Typical Workload Problem: A critical step in the Exploration & Production phase is examination of potential assets and evaluation of their economic potential. Core processes include seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation Seismic processing requires huge amounts of processing power, including extensive data cleansing in order to filter out the noise measured along with the signal received by detectors. The volumes of data are measured in terabytes for a single project. One, single iteration of a Seismic Depth Imaging processing job can take one to four weeks. Between acquisition and processing, an entire project can take up to a year, with important investment outcomes depending on the quality of the results of this chain. High Performance Computing (HPC) is required, but challenges include: Proximity: the nodes need to be in close proximity to each other and to storage systems or failure could create a fatal network bottleneck Network problems: With 10Gb connections between nodes (and high-performance parallel storage systems on the same racks), a company could still see network problems. Provided a base of 120 Intel Sandy Bridge nodes (with 16 cores each, GB of RAM, and 1.2 TB attached to each node as scratch space). GPU processors were mounted on the Intel Sandy Bridge nodes, and provided a computational speedup of up to 10 times Additional racks were at the ready to increase the number of nodes needed rapidly. Customer Satisfaction Attained! SoftLayer rose to the challenge partnering this concept with us and we are actively processing seismic at their facilities. We have these powerful servers available to us on demand, with the ability to easily scale back to 120 base nodes or switch to GPU nodes as needed. SoftLayer participated actively in the evaluation and improvement of the concept as we put it through its paces! Capacity: Even with 1.2 terabytes of local disk on each node, hopping across disperse geographies would not function, due to losing too many compute cycles IBM Corporation
