Green Building Council of Australia and Green Star ratings for steel Steel Credit Review
Market Drivers Public opinion is driving a demand for environmental products, services and employment. Companies now seek an environmental profile. Environmental ratings for buildings is now a selection criteria for high profile tenants. A premium is obtainable for this. Environmental Rating Systems for buildings drive choice.
What is Green Star Certification? Green Star Certification Application to have their project rated using an appropriate Green Star rating tool. These tools typically cover nine categories Eg Management, indoor environment, energy, transport, water, materials, land use, emissions, innovation Green Building Council rates buildings from 4 Star (Best Practice) to 6 Star (World Leader).
The Steel Industry and Green Star Background No points had been available to structural steel through Green Star s steel credit in the material category, Mat - 6 A minimum 60% recycled content was required to get 1 point and 90% for 2 points. Compliance difficulties meant few projects sought to use the structural steel credit The existing point scheme could drive perverse The existing point scheme could drive perverse outcomes.
The Steel Industry and Green Star Af formal materials review process instigated by GBCA. aimed to: Replace/modify recycled content credit within MAT-5 and MAT-6 Develop a more workable compliance process for practitioners and suppliers
Outcomes Mandatory provisions include membership of the World Steel Climate Action Program and ISO14001 certification for major steel manufacturing facilities Credit Criteria ( 2 points) STRUCTURAL To encourage dematerialisation and demountability To encourage downstream steel stewardship REINFORCING Best practice tensile strength together with an energy reducing production method Off site reinforcing steel optimization process.
Why This Change..? Waste / Sustainability hierarchy. h Reduce - Best Reuse - Better Recycle - Good Change in Green Star ratings tool moves emphasis to Reducing steel tonnages, rather than focusing on Recycling
Compliance Criteria Sourcing of Steel Building must source 95% of the steel via a Steel Manufacturer who Has valid ISO Environmental Management System (EMS) in place Is a member of World Steel Association s Climate Action Program (CAP) Benefits of the Compliance Criteria: Eliminates unsustainable practices p Improves future practices
Compliance Criteria OneSteel & BlueScope Steel meet both compliance criteria ISO EMS WSA Climate Action Program WSA Certification available via web - worldsteel.org O i O St l & Or via OneSteel & BlueScope Steel websites
Green Star Credit Points New criteria differentiates between a steel or concrete framed building. Steel Building if > 60% structural steel (by mass) Concrete Building if > 60 % reinforcing steel (by mass) If not > 60% structural or reinforcing steel, any 2 of 4 points can be sought Steel Building 2 points available 1 point: Using a greater proportion of higher strength structural steel 1 point: Using a proportion of fabricated steel via an accredited supply chain Concrete Building 2 points available 1 point: Using reinforcing i steel derived d using Polymer Injection Technology 1 point: Using a proportion of reinforcing steel manufactured using off site optimal fabrication techniques. Only a maximum of 2 points can be awarded
Structural Steel Credit Points Predominantly steel framed building 2 points available via: Higher Strength Steel ASI Environmental Sustainability Charter
Higher Strength Steel Credit Point One point awarded if the building utilises 95% Category A product and 25% Category B product. Category A - Minimum 95% by weight Roof & wall sheeting Strength Grade 550 Category B - Minimum 25% by weight Hot rolled structurals Strength Grade 350 Profiled steel decking 550 Hot rolled plate 350 Purlins & Girts 450 Cold formed & hollow sections 450 Light steel framing 450 Welded Sections 400 Promotes reduction in steel consumption through design solutions utilising higher strength materials available in the Australian market Cat B material must be grade marked by the fabricator
Higher Strength Steel Credit Point Design opportunities using higher vs standard grade steel Typical 4 level office + roof, 2,000 sq.m / floor, total framing steel = 600 t 120 t - Decking, purlins, roof sheeting (Category A) 400 t - Structural Steel frame, (Category B) 140 t of which is designed using higher grade steel 80 t - Reinforcing steel in the composite slab. (Reinforcing) Structural Steel or Concrete framed building? Structural Steel > 60% of total steel, so use Structural Steel criteria To achieve 1 point, need to satisfy 2 requirements 95% ( 114 t ) of deck, purlins, roof sheeting meets required grade 25 % requirement for Category B steel ( 140t / 400t = 35% ), thus OK Design awarded 1 point via higher strength steel criteria
Higher Strength Steel Credit Point Design opportunities using higher vs standard grade steel Comparative (retrospective) preliminary designs done on office building: 300 PLUS Grade 350 Saving Primary beam, 8.4m: 610UB UB % Secondary Beam, 12.6m: 460UB75 460UB67 10 % Overall saving in mass of all floor beams of 8.5% Opportunities to save section depth/mass by using higher strength steel: Tension members Columns, especially shorter &/or more heavily loaded columns Primary beams & some Secondary beams Members governed by serviceability criteria unlikely to benefit

ASI ESC Credit Point Australian Steel Institute Environmental Sustainability Charter One point awarded if; One point awarded if; 60% of fabricated structural steelwork is supplied by a Chartered Member
Reinforcing Steel Credit Points Predominantly concrete framed building 2 points for: Polymer Injection Technology Off-site Optimal Fabrication Techniques
Polymer Injection Technology 1 point awarded if: Credit Point 95% reinforcing steel 500MPa and 60% reo made using Polymer Injection Technology process Polymers (derived from tyres & plastic bottles) used as carbon source Promotes reduction & diversion of materials destined for land fill Promotes reduced electricity consumption in EAF Steel Mills Numerous reinforcing suppliers in Australian market utilising this Steel Making
Off-Site Optimal Fabrication Technique Credit Point 1 point awarded if: 15% steel produced using off site optimal fabrication techniques Examples include: Bamtec Carpets Custom / Engineered Meshes Prefabricated Cages Promotes efficiencies derived through; Variable & specific bar spacing Reduced laps Reduced wastage on-site Off site Optimal fabrication techniques are designed to provide significant savings in the amount of reinforcing steel used on a project.
Achieving Green Star Points Design Stage Utilise a proportion of higher strength structural steels in a structural steel framed building Utilise a proportion of custom designed mesh, reinforcing carpets &/or prefabricated cages in a concrete framed building Supply Chain Seek out steel fabricators, distributors & steelwork contractors who are accredited to the ASI s Environmental Sustainability Charter Seek out suppliers who supply reinforcing manufactured using Polymer Injection Technology or other approved methods.
