2 THE FUTURE TAKES SHAPE IN ROTTWEIL. More and more people are moving from rural areas to urban ones by 2050, over 70 % of the world s population will be living in cities. According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, by 2025 this trend will increase the floor area of buildings by approximately 85 % and confront us with one of the biggest challenges of our time: How do we bring people from A to B as efficiently, quickly, safely and conveniently as possible? Starting from 2016, solutions to this question will take shape in Rottweil, Germany in the ThyssenKrupp test tower. TOWERING SUPPORT FOR FUTURE TASKS. The 246 metre structure will be used to test and certify elevator innovations, thus significantly decreasing the development time of future and current skyscraper construction projects around the globe. Featuring 12 shafts and travel speeds of up to 18 m/s, the tower offers unparalleled potential for mastering future challenges. Three shafts are reserved for the revolutionary cable-free MULTI elevator. TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR THE REGION. The southern German region surrounding the research and develop ment tower will benefit from this truly outstanding structure. Germany s highest viewing platform open to the public at a dizzying 232 metres will give visitors an impressive 360 panorama. It is expected to become a popular destination for tourists throughout Baden-Wuerttemberg. LANDMARK OF PROGRESS. As a high-tech structure, the tower demonstrates ThyssenKrupp s engineering prowess. With an investment volume of over 40 million euros, ThyssenKrupp highlights the region s exceptional importance: Together with the elevator factory in Neuhausen/Fildern currently being comprehensively expanded to a technology park the planned test tower in Rottweil forms a cutting-edge innovation hub for elevator technology, with over 1,500 employees in all. A HIGH- CLASS PRESENCE. Despite its impressive height, the tower makes a light and airy visual impression. Architects Helmut Jahn and Werner Sobek encase the concrete shaft with a textile shell of fibre glass. This shell starts close-meshed at the base, revealing more and more of the tower towards the top, and reflecting the light differently throughout the day and year. The new test tower offers unparalleled opportunities and boasts sophisticated technologies and features it s a one-of-a-kind research centre for us and a must-see destination for the region s tourists and residents. ELEVATOR SHAFTS In the 12 different shafts, we will test and certify the elevator solutions of the future. Maximum speeds of 64.8 km/h create testing conditions not available anywhere else. The cable-free, multiple-car elevator system MULTI will be developed to market maturity here. HEAT STORAGE All heat generated by devices such as motors and computers is stored in an air cell, then transmitted via heat exchangers to the rooms requiring heating. ENERGY RECOVERY Under specific loading conditions, the installed traction elevators can generate electricity when in use. FACADE Measuring 17,000 square metres, the shell of PTFE-coated fibre glass is a highly complex material: self-cleaning, durable and from a distance almost transparent. DEFLECTION The natural power of the wind can cause tower deflection of up to 75 cm. A vibration absorber will be installed to reduce these effects. The tower s resonant frequency is 0.2 Hz. The elevator shafts thus offer real-world conditions for testing. SLIPFORM CONSTRUCTION We have selected the first-choice method for tower construction. The slipform is raised on rails along with the work platforms and grows with the tower, thanks to multiple hydraulic jacks. 6 A TRULY MAMMOTH PROJECT. Up to 100 engineers are currently planning what is considered one of Germany s most exciting building projects. Construction will begin March 2015, with workers in three daily shifts. Materials include 15,000 cubic metres of concrete, 200 rock nails and 2,640 tonnes of steel. HIGH-SPEED CONSTRUCTION. Rising 3.6 metres per day, the tower triples the speed of bamboo growing under 3 x ideal conditions. GETTING THINGS MOVING. By project completion, 30,000 cubic metres of excavation material will have been moved 60 MIO. about as much weight as 60 million bottles of water. BIG IDEAS NEED SPACE.
