SPACERS Important to use with flags where no spacer nibs are incorporated into the product. Spacers ensure accurate joint width and protection from damage due to product contact. 34 DESIGN & INSTALLATION GUIDANCE HOW TO SPECIFY PAVEMENT DESIGN Pavement Design The long-term performance of any concrete block or flag pavement is affected by the following parameters:- 1) The plan size, thickness and properties of the surface product; 2) The thickness and properties of the (sand) bedding layer; 3) The thickness and properties of the sub-base layer; 4) The strength and properties of the sub-grade (underlying ground conditions); 5) The frequency and intensity of the (traffic) loading. To ensure that the concrete block or flag pavement performs well throughout it s whole design life the designer should refer to the relevant section in BS 7533 to obtain the correct design method. Helpful guidance notes (based upon BS 7533) for architects, consulting civil engineers and other specifiers can be downloaded from the Interpave website: Edge Restraint Edge restraints capable of resisting designed traffic loadings, including constructional loadings, should be provided to prevent loss of laying course material and resist lateral movement of flags / paving. LAYING OF FLAGS Laying Course As a general rule flags in excess of 450 x 450mm are laid on a mortar bed with those less than 450 x 450mm laid on a sand bed. Where vehicular overrun is expected, the flexible bedding method must be employed. (A) Mortar Bedding: (Rigid Construction) Laid to line and level using a paviours maul, on a compacted full bed thickness of 25mm for load category IV, freshly mixed, moist 1:3 cement-sand mortar (proportions by volume) OR 1:3 lime-sand mortar (proportions by volume) should be used. Any rocking flags should be lifted and rebedded. Retarded, plasticized and pre-mixed mortars are permitted but any laying course mortar which has begun to set should be replaced. (B) Sand Bedding: (Flexible Construction) The laying course material should be naturally occurring sand graded in accordance with the Table on page 65. Moisture content should be as uniform as possible and the material moist without being saturated. For load category IV, a compacted laying course depth of 25mm is acceptable (with the top 10mm loosened using a rake). A&G recommend spacers are used to ensure joint width is maintained. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance. To learn more on BREEAM visit: MAINTENANCE GUIDANCE Regular maintenance and good cleaning practice will not only enhance the overall appearance of the paving but may help to prevent against slips, trips and falls. Removing surface contamination will help to maintain the required level of slip resistance for the floor surface. Cleaning of paving: general dirt and detritus To avoid the build up of detritus, general dirt and grime, surfaces should be washed with a brush and water (light detergent). To remove general dirt and detritus, regular brushing is recommended. For larger areas mechanical sweepers and scrubber-drier machines can be used. Where possible, low pressure tyres should be fitted to reduce the risk of breaking or cracking flags, Polypropylene, rather than wire, brushes should be used and finally brush and suction pressures should be set to the minimum required. Mechanical sweeping of block pavements should be avoided in the early life of the pavement and until the joints have sealed with detritus. Water jetting equipment is not recommended as it is likely to wash out the jointing material and may damage the surface of the block or flag paving. Tough stains and other contaminants may require more intensive cleaning and the use of proprietary products. Maintenance of joints Jointing material may be lost during the early life of the pavement in both dry and wet weather; being blown away in the dry and washed from the surface during heavy rain. It is therefore important to inspect areas of new paving regularly in their early life and top up joints with suitable material as needed. Efflorescence All quality paving products, which have a high cement content, may suffer from efflorescence or lime bloom. Lime bloom is a chemical reaction between cement and water. A product of this reaction is calcium hydroxide, 'lime,' which is slightly soluble in water. Under certain conditions it can migrate through damp concrete to the surface where it in turn reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide to produce a deposit of calcium carbonate crystals. This deposit is normally extremely thin, and when wet becomes transparent and seems to disappear. The occurrence of lime bloom on the surface of concrete paving products is a spasmodic and unpredictable phenomenon not associated with poor quality manufacture. Lime bloom forms more readily when concrete becomes wet and dries slowly; therefore occurrences are more frequent in winter months. Generally it only occurs in the early life of concrete paving products, and materials which have been in place for a year or more, without experiencing lime bloom, are unlikely to be affected. The phenomenon is temporary and superficial and will generally disappear in time without affecting concrete strength or durability. Efflorescence is in no way detrimental to the performance of the product and the manufacturer cannot accept responsibility for this natural occurrence. The best action to deal with efflorescence is to let nature take its course. Contact one of our Specifications Managers for further details. NOTES COLOURS & FINISHES The colours shown in this literature are as accurate as the printing process will allow. Whilst every effort is made to match colours and represent textures, we recommend that colours and textures are chosen from actual samples of the products. All products are manufactured from natural materials and although we strive to provide consistency of colour, variation may occur in the manufacturing process. It is for this reason that we recommend that products are selected from at least three bales, within each delivery. This will eliminate 'banding'.
