15 KASSEL KERB INSTALLATION Tactile paving page 59 Kassel Kerbs are complemented by a range of tactile flag pavings to give comprehensive pedestrian and disabled safety approach INSTALLATION All Brett Kassel Kerbs are laid in same way as conventional precast concrete kerbs. Kassel Kerb installation requires no special training and can be installed with minimal disruption to existing infrastructure. Kassel Kerbs are laid dry butt-jointed (minimum joint size 3mm) on either a mortar bed on a pre-formed kerb face, or on a suitably stiff, semi-dry, concrete foundation. The foundation should be 690mm wide, 200mm deep and the concrete haunching 225mm wide at the base. Kerbs should be adjusted to the correct line and level, taking into account the slope on the top of the kerb, and haunched as high up the rear of the face as possible whilst allowing for the surface to be laid flush with the rear of the kerb. The toe of the kerb should be flush with the surface of the road. TRANSITION TO BRITISH STANDARD HB2 KERB Transition kerbs taper from a Kassel Kerb unit to a British Standard HB2 kerb with an upstand of 125mm. If the existing kerbs have been laid at a different height, the kerbs abutting the Kassel transitions should be re-adjusted to the appropriate level and laid with the face in line with the kerb. In all cases, the toe of the Kassel Kerb unit should be flush with the surface of the road so that weight of the bus on the Kassel Kerb unit prevents the unit from moving. Kerbs should be stored on a level, firm and dry surface where they are not liable to damage. HANDLING Contractors should always prepare a risk assessment, incorporating safe working practices, prior to their commencing work. Due to the weight of Kassel Kerb products, suitable lifting equipment should be used. Brett has a range of clamps for the movement and placement of Kassel Kerb units. TECHNICAL SUPPORT, DESIGN SERVICE AND SPECIAL UNITS Brett Commercial Support can provide expert advice on the design and installation of Kassel Kerbs for use in bus stops - along with all the products in our range. 16 BRETT LANDSCAPING Commercial Support THE TRIEF KERB SYSTEM TRIEF, TRIEF CADET AND TRIEF CHEVRON - THE ORIGINAL CONTAINMENT KERB SYSTEM PROVIDING VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY THROUGH PHYSICAL AND VISUAL DETERRENCE THE TRIEF KERB SYSTEM Trief GST2A For use on carriageways where 85 percentile speeds are below 40 mph 380 Trief GST2 For use on minimal excavation projects, especially bridges 270 Trief Cadet For use on roads up to 30 mph i.e urban or residential areas, or smaller traffic calming schemes Since 1962, the Brett Trief containment kerb system has been delivering high levels of vehicle and pedestrian protection and is widely recognised as having made a substantial contribution to British road safety. The unique Trief profile works by trapping the tyre of impacting vehicles and ensuring that they do not leave the carriageway. Trief Kerbs offer solutions for bridges and roads offering vehicular and pedestrian safety for larger and smaller vehicles. The Trief and Trief Cadet Kerb system is comprised of a range of components, including quadrants, short lengths, as well as radius and transition kerbs. This allows for a wide range of design possibilities that can address specific site constraints and safety considerations. The use of transition kerbs allows Trief Kerbs to be seamlessly integrated into existing half batter kerbs. Trief Kerb units are available as standard with transitions to British Standard HB2 or splay kerbs. COMPOSITION AND MANUFACTURE Trief Kerb units are wet cast from high strength concrete, manufactured with premium quality granite aggregates. FINISHES Trief Kerb concrete units are available in three finishes: Standard Finish for a smooth, matt surface Exposed Aggregate Finish with a subtle, slightly aged finish for conservation and heritage installations Granite units for use in aesthetically sensitive locations, but with the same design properties as the concrete units. FEATURES AND BENEFITS Design prevents vehicles from deliberately or accidentally leaving the carriageway Protects people, infrastructure and landscaping by containing vehicles within the carriageway Deters drivers from mounting the kerb by creating a visual warning Controls traffic flows when used as part of traffic management or calming measures Provides effective protection for pedestrians in mixed use areas such as motorway services and pedestrian islands Available in a wide range of colours and textures from either cast concrete or cut granite to suit project requirements Full range of quadrants and radials units available to create comprehensive traffic management solutions Smaller toe profile of GST2 is ideal for bridges due to reduced excavation requirement Available with dowel holes for sites with limited haunching options - particularly bridges - or where extra protection is required Highly visible chevron units provide information on road navigation from a distance and in low light conditions Most shapes or sizes of roundabout or curve can be made Compatible with Brett s tactile, flag and concrete block paving ranges 16

17 Tactile paving page 59 Trief Kerbs are complemented by a range of tactile flag pavings to give comprehensive pedestrian and disabled safety approach How does Trief work? The Brett Trief Kerb has been designed and proven to work in three ways to prevent vehicles leaving the carriageway: The Trief Kerb is designed to present a clear visual signal to road users that prevents vehicles trying to leave the carriageway, its height also discourages pedestrians from crossing the highway. The result is that the separate streams of road users are effectively segregated which is a key contributor to enhancing road safety. 2. The Trief Kerb should be installed with a 25mm upstand from the highway surface leading onto an inclined shoulder. This is essential to give road users an initial physical warning that their vehicle is leaving the carriageway and that they need to take action to bring their vehicle back onto the carriageway. The inclined shoulder will help the driver bring the vehicle back on to the carriageway. 3. Finally, the Trief Kerb is designed to capture the sidewall bulge of a vehicle tyre within its concave section thereby containing the vehicle within the highway boundary. Taken together, these three steps have been proven to contribute to British road safety for almost 50 years by providing a reliable, passive safety feature for use on our highways. 2. Paving Haunching Toe 25 min Road level Trief units can be used to provide effective protection for many locations including toll booths 17 17

18 BRETT LANDSCAPING Commercial Support TRIEF AND TRIEF CADET KERB KEY COMPONENTS Q STANDARD TRIEF KERBS Trief GST2A for carriageways and roads The standard Trief Kerb unit provide a strong visual deterrent due to their size and unique shape. This encourages reduced speed levels and increases hazard awareness. It also helps to improve the levels of road safety. In the case of an accident, the height and profile of the Trief Kerb units prevents vehicles from exiting the carriageway, protecting infrastructure and pedestrians GST2A Standard Kerb Length 914mm Wt (kg) Concrete: GST2A Granite: GST2A914G 261 Exposed: GST2A914E 220 For units with dowel holes, add D after 914 element of code ie: GST2A914D GST2A Short Lengths Length 543mm Wt (kg) Concrete: GST2A Granite: GST2A543G 155 Exposed: GST2A543E 131 GST2A Short Lengths Length 669mm Wt (kg) Concrete: GST2A Granite: GST2A699G 191 Exposed: GST2A699E 161 GST2A Half Kerb 455mm Length 455mm Wt (kg) Concrete: GST2A Granite: GST2A455G 130 Exposed: GST2A455E 110 For units with dowel holes, add D after 455 element of code ie: GST2A455D Trief GST2 for bridges The shallower Trief GST2 profile has been designed to have a slimmer toe section. This serves to minimise excavation requirements and allow installation within limited depth applications, for example, around the vulnerable structural parapets and edge beams of bridges. Trief Kerb units deliver protection from vehicle impact and accidental loading, acting as a highly effective yet economical barrier that shields pedestrians and the structure itself GST2 Standard Kerb Length 914mm Wt (kg) Concrete: GST Granite: GST2914G 218 Exposed: GST2914E 184 For units with dowel holes, add D after 914 element of code ie: GST2914D GST2 Half Kerb 455mm Length 455mm Wt (kg) Concrete: GST Granite: GST2455G 109 Exposed: GST2455E 92 For units with dowel holes, add D after 455 element of code ie: GST2455D Trief Cadet units for urban areas The smaller Trief Cadet has been designed for use within lower speed urban areas where the size of the larger Trief units may not suit the surrounding urban environment and pedestrian movement. The size of the Trief Cadet Kerb still provides the benefits of the Trief family in terms of enhanced vehicle safety. Similarly, their 914mm length enables them to be seamlessly integrated into standard kerb layouts key within the urban environment GST1A Standard kerb unit Length 914mm Wt (kg) Standard: GST1A Granite: GST1A914G 180 Exposed: GST1A914E GST1A Half kerb unit Length 455mm Wt (kg) Standard: GST1A Granite: GST1A455G 90 Exposed: GST1A455E

26 BRETT LANDSCAPING Commercial Support TRIEF KERB INSTALLATION INSTALLATION Trief Kerbs are laid in same way as conventional precast concrete kerbs. Trief Kerb installation requires no special training and can be installed with minimal disruption to existing infrastructure. Trief Kerbs are laid dry butt-jointed (minimum joint size 3mm) on either a mortar bed on a pre-formed kerb base, or on a suitable stiff semi-dry concrete foundation. The foundation should be 610mm wide, 200mm deep and the concrete haunching 230mm wide at the base. Trief Kerbs should be adjusted to line and level and haunched as high up the rear of the face as possible whilst allowing for the surface to be laid flush with the rear of the kerb. The toe of the kerb should be set with a 25mm upstand against the road surface. 415 Road level Concrete foundation Paving Haunching 100 TRANSITION TO BRITISH STANDARD HB2 KERB Transition kerbs taper from a Trief Kerb unit to a British Standard HB2 kerb with an upstand of 125mm. If the existing kerbs have been laid at a different height, the kerbs abutting the Trief transitions should be re-adjusted to the appropriate level and laid with the face in line with the kerb. PACKAGING AND STORAGE Trief Kerbs units are supplied individually. Kerbs should be stored on a level, firm and dry surface where they are not liable to damage. HANDLING Contractors should always prepare a risk assessment, incorporating safe working practices, prior to their commencing work. Due to the weights of Trief Kerb products, suitable lifting equipment should be used. Brett has a range of clamps for the movement and placement of Trief Kerb units. 27 CASE STUDY BRETT KASSEL SPECIFIED FOR TAMESIDE BUS ROUTES Background Public transport occupies an important place in the strategies of local authorities since it satisfies a need for lower carbon travel, can be instrumental in relieving congestion within major urban areas, as well as offering low cost mobility to the individual and social sustainability to the wider community. Greater Manchester has over 227km of bus routes. Central to the delivery of the system is the development of Quality Bus Corridors (QBC) on which the service will be greatly improved and where buses will be given a higher priority over other traffic. The aim is to make the public transport service more user friendly, pleasant and reliable, and therefore a more attractive choice than the car. In the region, bus travel makes up 84% of all journeys made on public transport. The Solution The Metropolitan Borough of Tameside has nearly 24km of bus routes which have been part the QBC initiative. Ian Evans, Contracts Manager (Operations) with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, explains how Kessel Kerbs have played a fundamental role in improving bus access; Brett Kassel Kerbs have been used throughout to help raise the stops to enable easier access on and off the buses. The kerbs are substantial and the perfect height. They are a great product. The project has also seen the use of recycled glass as a filler, which while not a new idea, the council is keen to see reintroduced. The renovated bus stops feature a blockwork with Kassel Kerbs used to form a seamless, gap-free join between low-floor buses and the stops. This improves passenger safety, especially for the disabled and visually impaired, but also reduces wear and tear, substantially cutting overheads for the bus and coach operators. 27

28 BRETT LANDSCAPING Commercial Support BRETT PERMEABLE PAVING PERMEABLE PAVING PRODUCTS FOR SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE SYTEMS (SUDS) Sustainability is today a major factor within the construction industry, influenced by both planning guidance and legislation. In most cases, we can see that the key drivers behind this change are the conservation and management of two of our most precious resources energy and water. PERMEABLE PAVEMENT PAVING BENEFITS Runoff control Conventional paving systems are designed to simply shed water from their surface, whereas permeable paving allows the water to pass between each block and into the underlying sub-base, where it can be stored, channelled or slowly released. This release can be into the ground, passed on to a further stage of SUDS management train or passed into the drainage system, but it is the controlled passage of water that is important. Good design enables permeable paving systems to reduce first flush, control peak rates and to attenuate total volume and frequency of run off by employing the principle of source control. Pollution control The second key benefit of permeable paving is its ability to reduce pollutants, again at or close to source. Pollutants can be retained on the surface of the paving (especially where there is little or no fall), before being carried through to bedding and sub-base areas where they can be trapped and degraded over time. CIRIA*, the leading body in the research for SUDS, states that 60-95% of suspended solids and 70-90% of hydrocarbons can be removed by permeable paving. This often means that not only is an oil interceptor not required, but that water leaving the site is of a higher quality due to the efficiency of permeable paving systems at trapping and removing a wide range of pollutants. Space efficiency Permeable pavements are a very space-efficient solution and ideal for high density housing and construction projects. As well as the above, permeable pavements offer: Stand-alone solutions Integration into management train Optimum use of space Spare hydraulic capacity Potential to mix permeable and impermeable surfaces to optimise design Control and minimise quantity SUDS Improve water quality Enhance amenity and wildlife *Construction Industry Research and Information Association The best outcomes in SUDS design 28

29 As a long established manufacturer and supplier to the built environment, Brett recognises its responsibility to develop, promote and support products, including permeable paving, which can be used within SUDS design or as a stand-alone SUDS solution. These must be capable of seamless integration into all forms of the hard landscaped environment to enhance water quality, minimise flood risk and improve the management of our most valuable natural resource - water. The effective use of SUDS can therefore help to mitigate the impact of the more extreme weather events that we are seeing as a result of changing climate patterns and of our ever increasing demands on land usage. Permeable pavements must be designed to deliver two objectives: 1. Supporting the planned traffic loading 2. Managing surface water effectively Two sets of calculations are therefore required when designing permeable pavements. Structural design Assessment of traffic loading pre and post-construction Assessment of sub-grade California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value Determination of sub-base thickness A temporary dense bitumen macadam (DBM) layer can be used during site construction to prevent damage to the sub-base. Prior to commencing construction of the block layer, the DBM should be cored or punched with 75mm holes on a 750mm orthogonal grid. However, this method may reduce the storage capacity of the pavement and require a deeper sub-base to compensate. Hydraulic design Assessment of sub-grade permeability Selection of System A, B or C dependent upon sub-grade permeability, existing or ground pollution (especially on brownfield site developments), water table levels and proximity to Source Protection Zones Determine design return period and rainfall data. The return period is an event occurring on average once over a defined period, typically this is 1 year in 30, 1 year in 100 or 1 year in 100 plus 20% Allow for additional drainage for adjacent areas which can include drainage from roofs. As a guide, a ratio of impermeable to permeable paving should be approximately 2:1 Determine sub-base thickness required for water storage. This may need to be deeper depending upon the slope of the pavement as a steeper slope will reduce the storage capacity of the sub-base Determine discharge rates. Select the greater sub-base depth The Brett Commercial Support team can assist with all aspects of this process. Contact

33 CASE STUDY BRETT PAVING IS SPECIFIED FOR THE UK S LARGEST PERMEABLE PAVING SCHEME Background The Sixfields development sits on the bank of the River Nene and is part of Northampton Brownfield Initiative - a mixed urban regeneration containing new housing, a rugby club, football pitch and large car parks, as well as a nature reserve. This location boasts the UK's largest permeable concrete block paving scheme, covering 52,000m² and was constructed using Brett's Omega Flow permeable paving to provide a flooding and drainage solution on this environmentally sensitive site adjacent to the River Nene floodplain. Because of the benefits of permeable paving there was no need for catch pits or oil interceptors on the site, as any hydrocarbons would be broken down naturally within the permeable pavement construction layers. This helped to reduce the overall project cost to the client as well as maximise the available space. This site can therefore be seen to have met all the criteria of a SUDS project in terms of attenuating water run off from the site, improving the quality of water leaving the site and enhancing the amenity of the surrounding area. Sixfields had been derelict since the 1970 s when it was used as a landfill site after previous use for gravel extraction. The site also encompassed a sensitive nature reserve containing a unique habitat for wildlife. The old landfill site was first sealed off with a clay capping layer half a metre thick. This was then compacted using high-energy ground compaction techniques in order to minimise future settlement. The use of Omega Flow block paving was specifically chosen to accommodate any future differential settlement. Northampton Borough Council specified traditional asphalt designs and conventional drainage for roads linking car parks on the development. Culverts were constructed under these roads and discharged via interceptors at controlled outfalls. Storm conditions still allowed first flush contaminants to be discharged. A concrete block permeable paving SUDS solution was sought for the construction of the two large car parks. The solution Brett Landscaping advised the client on the advantages of a sustainable drainage solution: Omega Flow. The two main car parks were constructed of 19,000m² and 16,000m² respectively of Omega Flow permeable paving. This would allow rainwater to be attenuated and released at a constant rate through five outfalls into a brook. Finally, 17,000 m 2 of roadway linking the car parks was also constructed using Omega Flow. 33

48 BRETT LANDSCAPING Commercial Support CIRCLES AND LAYING PATTERNS The Brett Landscaping range of Concrete Block Paving includes a wide variety of colours, textures and sizes which allow you to create custom solutions. Concrete Block Paving laying and circle patterns can be used to communicate navigational or site information about the environment to both pedestrians and drivers as well as provide aesthetic appeal. In addition, Concrete Block Paving relies on the interlocking patterns within the installation to provide a strong surface that can withstand regular trafficking. Consequently, it is important that the level of trafficking is considered when designing or specifying Concrete Block Paving installations. These pages provide some outline information on both selecting the appropriate pack and unit information for laying circles and show a selection of typical laying patterns.
