Acoustic Range
THERMATEX Acoustic Range Advantages of the Acoustic Range White, smooth surface finish with a variety of acoustic properties Flexible adaption of the room (also retrospectively) to meet current acoustic requirements and changes of function Variable adjustment of sound absorption and sound attenuation to the rooms conditions and to ideally meet the requirements Ceilings with areas of high absorption reverberation times according to guidelines and standards and zones of amplified speech in a uniform surface finish Fire protection requirements and hygiene requirements combined with the acoustic performance of a ceiling system AMF THERMATEX ceiling tiles are only slightly air permeable due to their high density. Thus, only a small amount of dust particles can settle on the ceilings surface the ceiling remains clean. 2 THERMATEX Acoustic Range the full range of sound absorption The AMF THERMATEX Acoustic Range is a new concept for modular ceiling tiles. The fleece-faced tiles guarantee the full range of sound absorption with the same visual appearance and surface properties. From reflective, through absorbing to extremely absorbing performance, the full range of sound absorption is covered. Exceptional sound attenuation can also be achieved with up to 44dB for example, with THERMATEX Silence, a very high performance value for a suspended ceiling with an open void. The AMF THERMATEX Acoustic Range offers the right solution for almost every application and can fulfil the highest requirements in terms of sound reduction and room acoustics. The strength of the range lies not only in using a single tile type per ceiling, but the possibility to also combine different products with different acoustic performance (e.g. THERMATEX Alpha and THERMATEX Acoustic RL).
Extremely absorbing acoustics, extremely elegant design! The THERMATEX Acoustic Range from Knauf AMF offers a comprehensive product program of modular ceilings for the base acoustic setting of rooms dependent on their function (e.g. speech, music) and fine-tuning for targeted sound control. The products are thereby suitable for many applications. Office buildings Individual offices Open plan offices Meeting rooms Cafeterias Storage rooms Corridors Public buildings Assembly halls Conference rooms Service counter halls Dining rooms Foyers Technical rooms Corridors Schools Class rooms Lecture theatres Staff rooms Auditoriums Canteens Workshops Changing rooms Corridors Recreation rooms Special Applications Rooms with special acoustic requirements, such as cinemas, can be acoustically fine-tuned using the extremely absorbing AMF THERMATEX Alpha black tiles installed in combination with extra matt supporting profiles. Stringent requirements in terms of sound reduction and room acoustics can thereby be fulfilled. Even bowling alleys, with the target of sound reduction, can be acoustically optimised. 3
Material description and product types THERMATEX Acoustic Range proven quality All tiles in the AMF THERMATEX Acoustic Range are made from a mineral baseboard manufactured by the wet-felt process. Invisible perforations give the acoustic performance required and the board is then laminated with an acoustic fleece, giving an elegant, smooth, white appearance. The production of extremely absorbing ceilings using hard mineral boards and the entire spectrum of sound absorption (αw =.15 to 1.) available in one, uniform surface finish is revolutionary. The tiles are produced using new generation bio-soluble mineral wool, clay, starch and perlite ensuring the natural character of the products. The RAL-quality mark confirms the surveillance and control of the mineral wool. 4
Our product range optimised for you We have optimised the acoustic values of our THERMATEX Acoustic Range and can therefore fulfil higher room acoustic requirements. The different ceiling tile types in the Acoustic Range all have a uniform fleece-coated surface and cover the complete range of absorption from hardly absorbing to extremely absorbing. 6 Sound absorption THERMATEX Acoustic Range optimal sound absorption Sound absorption is responsible for the audibility in a room. How reverberant a room seems or how loud a source of sound appears is dependent on the sound absorption. How do you define sound absorption? What we understand by this is reducing the sound energy in a room through sound waves losing energy on component surfaces. The energy of the sound waves is absorbed or reflected by the enclosing surfaces, as well as objects and people within the room. The correct sound absorption ensures that the sound in a room is perceived as louder or quieter. The ability of a material to swallow sound waves depends on the materials properties. Porous, open-cell or perforated materials normally absorb sound very well. Good audibility in a room describes the conditions that enable the best possible transmission of a sound source to the listener. Acoustic requirements according to room use for reverberation time and frequency response as per DIN Determination of the room acoustic requirements as per DIN In the first step, the reverberation time (Tsoll) is determined according to use and volume. 2 In the second step, the frequency dependent tolerance range for speech and music is determined according to DIN ,6 2,4 +4 % 2,2 Intended range (music) 2, Reverberation time Tsoll [s] +2 % 1,8 1,6 T / Tsoll 1,4 1,2-2 % 1, Intended range (speech),8-4 %,6,4,2 1 1 music 6 speech 1. Volume V / m3 lesson 1. sport 1 1. sport For large rooms (halls, open-plan offices) the VDI 376 guideline applies.
Optimised sound control Absorbers, diffusers and reflectors Sound attenuation High sound absorption will dampen the sounds in a room, both unwanted sounds (e.g. noise) as well as useful sounds (e.g. speech). The reverberation time as a sole measurement criterion for the function of a room does not distinguish any difference between the two. By utilising sound absorbing and sound reflecting zones, you can select which sound sources should be emphasised and which should be reduced. This is why the AMF THERMATEX Acoustic Range has been developed. The combination of different absorbers (such as acoustic ceilings, wall panels and acoustic rafts) facilitates the acoustic adjustment of a room. Care should be taken to ensure that the sound absorption is evenly distributed across the relevant frequency ranges. Sound reflecting fixtures and fittings have a positive effect on sound distribution within a room. Individual elements such as sound absorbing ceiling rafts and wall panels are sophisticated, architectural solutions. Sound is transmitted between rooms not only through partition walls, but also through a variety of components and paths by flanking transmission. The design challenge is the targeted control of sound (e.g. from speaker to listener) through the adjustment of absorbing and reflecting surfaces and elements. At the same time, the reverberation time is adapted for the use of the room depending on frequency within the range of the tolerances. Optimising audibility The Knauf AMF Acoustic Range offers a wide spectrum of different absorbers. The absorption properties of the elements ensure the required reverberation time is met (with a uniform surface finish). Optimising sound reflection Transmission of sound between speaker and listener Useful sound Unwanted sound Absorbent panelling Reflective ceiling THERMATEX db Acoustic in 3 mm thickness offers such excellent sound attenuation with 43 db that the usual office standard (37dB on site) is achieved. No further cavity barriers above the partition or wool overlays are required. The complete ceiling void therefore remains easily accessible. Installation and maintenance is considerably simplified. Sound attenuation through acoustic ceilings Useful sound Unwanted sound, multiple reflections (flutter echo) between reflective, parallel walls Absorbent panelling Transmission of sound through the ceiling Transmission of sound between rooms Increased sound protection from the THERMATEX Acoustic Range reflective ceiling 7

THERMATEX SF Acoustic built-in safety This performance ceiling with SF shadow edge requires a minimal installation height as the tiles are installed purely from below. The removal and re-installation of the individual tiles for maintenance is achieved simply by a small shift of the tile along the grid. Grid construction for THERMATEX SF Acoustic SF edge (long side) SF edge (short side) Step by step installation/demounting Step The tile should be inserted into the module with the double groove first. Care must be taken to ensure that the horizontal leg of the T-grid sits in the lower groove. Otherwise, the following steps will not be able to be carried out. Step Subsequently, the opposite side is pushed up against the grid system. This should be done without too much force, as the tile must only be raised to the corresponding grid level. Step Finally, the tile is moved in the direction of the side that was pushed up in the previous step. Please ensure that the tile remains pushed up so that the groove and the grid system can be pushed into each other. At the same time, the opposite side slides to the lower level and lies flush in the system. Cross-section wall connection and joint width profile T24/ perimeter spring 2 2 shadow gap = 7, mm 11

Project case study 1 Knauf AMF Acoustic solutions Secondary school case study As part of the refurbishment of a secondary school, one of the major issues was the room acoustics, with overlong reverberation times in various classrooms. Following an initial on-site meeting, a reverberation time calculation was carried out using the recorded data. This resulted in an average calculated value of approximately 1.8 seconds. In order to confirm the calculated value, measurements were conducted within the building, as can be seen in figure 2, and the reverberation time Tmid = 1.65 seconds confirmed. To ensure measuring accuracy, both microphone and loudspeaker positions were repeatedly varied. Using the room s volume and DIN 1841, the required reverberation time for the reference room was calculated as.6 seconds with the corresponding tolerance band. The proposed ceiling layout (see figure 1 ) was installed and supplemented with wall panels to provide an additional area of absorption. For this variation, also recommended by DIN 1841, our reverberation time calculation service gave an average reverberation time of.6 seconds. The local council, as investors, also carried out a reverberation time calculation to confirm the calculated value. The loudspeaker and microphone positions were also varied for the measurement. The results of the measurements are shown in figure 2 and gave an average of Tm =.6 seconds. 14
2 The original classrooms before the refurbishment were constructed with a painted concrete ceiling and cavity brick walls, windows with curtains, linoleum flooring and the usual classroom equipment (blackboard, hard desks and chairs). During the refurbishment the ceiling was fitted with AMF THERMATEX Alpha and with a reflective segment of AMF THERMATEX Acoustic RL above the teacher for vocal support. The major benefit of this combination is that optically there is no difference between the extremely absorbing (THERMATEX Alpha) and the reflecting (THERMATEX Acoustic RL) areas. Both tile types, along with all the other products in the THERMATEX Acoustic Range offer a plain, homogenous, smooth white surface finish. AMF wall absorbers were installed to reduce disturbing sound reflections from the back wall. These consist of robust, perforated metal cassettes with acoustic inserts and are in daily use as a magnetic notice board.
