Introduction M/s Sahyadri Industries Ltd.(SIL), Pune, Maharashtra, India, is one of India's leading manufacturers of Fibre Cement Roofing Sheets & Accessories. SIL has been providing building material solutions over the last six decades and has built itself a reputation of a solution provider, in India and a few selected markets worldwide. A well established enterprise manufactures its produce in plants located in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & Gujarat, in India. All products are manufactured as per IS SIL manufactures Cellulose Fibre Cement Flat sheets & Boards (Non Asbestos) as per IS: , under the brand name of ECOPRO. The EcoPro brand symbolizes for a sustainable solution, backed with a professional expertise. Manufactured in thicknesses from 4mm to 18mm, boasting of a wide range of applications from false ceiling, wall/ partition/ paneling/cladding/ roof lining/ tile under layers/ column & beam encasement/ smoke barriers to duct covering, furniture backing, kitchen applications, table tops, cabinets and mezzanine floors, the boards and systems make up for an ideal choice in today s dynamic environment. SIL is now introducing a 62 mm thick Ecopro demountable panel with a honeycomb core. These panels are manufactured by inserting paper honeycomb tightly in between two 6mm thick Ecopro boards, to form a sandwich panel, ready for use. These can be used in almost all types of buildings/structures, be it commercial, malls, auditoriums, hotels, hospitals, malls, airports and or industries. EcoPro Demountable partitions are full as well as half-height partition systems and can be installed swiftly and demounted with virtually no damage to the surface. 5

Ecopro Boards & Panels Sahyadri Industries Ltd., manufactures Fibre Cement Flat sheets (Non Asbestos ) as per IS: , under the brand name of ECOPRO. Available in various thicknesses from 6mm to 18mm,they have a wide range of applications such as partitions, false ceilings and flooring, suitable for any type of building, both new and refurbished. Appearance: Ecopro boards have a smooth light grey surface, ready to take on any type of finish such as paint, wallpaper and hard laminate etc. Light-weight: These boards are lighter in weight compared to other boards, used in similar applications. Strong & durable: Ecopro boards have MOR(Modulus Of Rupture) in the range of N/mm 2 (depending on thickness) making them strong. They have a good life because the raw materials used are mostly minerals and do not disintegrate or lose their integrity easily. Dimensionally stable: The boards are cured under high temperature and pressure system of autoclave, which makes them dimensionally stable. Easy workability: The boards can be cut by scoring on the surface with a hard and sharp tool. Carpenter s saw and power driven cutters can also be used for faster and smooth incision. The boards can also have some feature designs like straight or architectural steps or grooves etc. Handling and Storage: The boards should be stored flat in a dry, covered area and should be protected against rain / water. The boards should not be stored on edges. The boards should be lifted clear off the stack and should not be dragged over each other. Ideally, two persons should carry a board by holding its longitudinal edges and keeping widthwise up. Non-Combustible: Ecopro boards have been tested and designated as Non-Combustible, as per BS-476 Part-4. This also makes them fire resistant. 6

Special Features Applications: Ecopro boards can be used for false ceiling, wall/ partition/ paneling/cladding/ roof lining/ tile under layers/ column & beam encasement/ smoke barriers, duct covering, furniture backing, kitchen applications, table tops, cabinets, mezzanine floors etc, based on thickness. These boards and panels can be used in almost all type of buildings/structures be it commercial, malls, auditoriums hotels, hospitals, malls, airports and or industries. Asbestos Free: Ecopro boards are 100% asbestos free, which contributes towards green building practices. Light-weight: The density of Ecopro board is 1.25gms/cc, which is lower than other boards available in the market of a similar type. Use of non-thick boards further reduces the weight on the super structure. Water resistant: Ecopro boards absorb approx.35% water when immersed in water for 24 hours. During this period it loses its strength slightly while in water, but regains it as soon as it s dry. Therefore the boards are called water resistant. Termite resistant: There is no effect of termite witnessed on the boards. Non-Combustible: When tested as per BS:476: Part-4,these are rated as Non-combustible. This means these boards neither burn nor can aid a fire. Fire resistance: These boards are non-combustible and also are rated CLASS-1 as per BS:476: Part-7 of Surface Spread of Flame test, which denotes the boards are fire resistant. Thermal Conductivity: Ecopro boards have low thermal conductivity (0.21w/mk). This property resists the heat to enter or go out of a particular part of the building, keeping the occupants comfortable. Sound insulation: 6mm thick board gives 26dB sound insulation which shows its ability to reduce noise levels to a great extent when used as a partition/false ceiling system. Jointing & finishing: The board s joints can be jointed and finished with the help of a jointing compound and fiber tape to give it a seamless look. Feature Joints: The edges of the boards are very strong and straight to have a feature design, if so required. Decoration: These boards can be embellished with most types of paint, textures and wallpapers. These can also be used in bathrooms as light-weight ceramic tiles can be fixed on the same. 7

Partitions Partitions are usually non-load bearing. This type of partition consists of a wooden framework either supported on the floor below or by side-walls. Partition walls constructed from fibre cement are popular as bases for tiling in kitchens or in wet areas like bathrooms. Steel framed partitioning is also seen in use. This partition consists of floor/ ceiling channel (used primarily at the base and head of the partition) and stud (vertical sections fixed at 610mm centres). Steel Frame Partitions: Ecopro boards made from cellulose fibre and cement, are screw fixed to either side of a G.I. Frame to create partitions that suits customer s design and usage. These partitions are lightweight & Non-Load bearing. These partitions are fast & easy to erect and highly cost-effective. They are known to provide good Fire, Sound & Thermal Resistance properties. The design flexibility makes metal frame partitions suitable for most type of buildings, like hotels, hospitals, commercial establishments, industries, airports, malls, theatres and studios etc. These can be assembled at site from a free-standing partition to normal height and also to a greater height partitions. The materials used to make a partition are shown here under: Item Size in mm. 13 Installation Procedure: Frame making: Ecopro steel frame partition is installed by fixing floor / ceiling channel along the line marked on the floor at 450mm centres, using nylon sleeve and wood screws, as per the drawing for the location of the partition. One more floor ceiling channel is fixed to the ceiling/slab in line and plumb to the floor channel. Studs are then inserted into the floor channel at 610 mm centres. The cut outs provided in the web of studs are kept in a line to accommodate the service pipes like electrical or plumbing in the cavity of the partition. The studs are cut short in length by 5mm before inserting into the floor channel, to maintain the line and level throughout the length of the partition. Ecopro board fixing: Ecopro boards are screw fixed to either side of the frame work using self-drilling and tapping screws with under head cutter at 200mm centres. The screws are kept 15mm away from the edge and 40mm from the corner. The screw should be 10mm longer than the actual thickness of the board. A gap of 1.5 to 2.0mm is maintained between the board edges. Care needs to be taken that the joints of the boards on either side of the frame do not fall on the same stud to avoid a through and through passage of heat, sound and fire. This can be achieved while fixing boards. Start board fixing with a 4 wide board on one side of the frame and continue the same till end. On the other side, start with a 2 wide board and continue with 4 wide boards after it, till the end. While making an L or T joint, make sure that Ecopro board is inserted fixed at this junction between two studs. This will act as a cavity barrier and will not allow smoke (in case of fire) to travel through the cavity. Insulation: Insulation is suspended in the cavity, if required. Jointing and Finishing: Ecopro board s joints can be finished with jointing compound and fiber tape as per recommended practice. Cement primer (Oil based) is to be used on the entire surface before applying putty or paint. Note: 1. Intermediate channel is fixed horizontally on either side of the frame if the partition height accedes the board length, to provide support to the board s edges. 2. Materials like studs, channels, insulation along with Ecopro boards and their sizes that are to be used in a particular partition system are selected from the partition system selector chart given at Page No. 9 &

Steel Frame Partition (Double Layer) Non-load bearing steel stud partition with two layers of Ecopro boards on either side of frame is assembled at site using different sizes of steel sections to make a frame. The selection of steel sections and Ecopro boards depend on the performance requirement of the partition system to be installed. These partitions are used to provide enhanced performance in terms of fire resistance, sound insulation and the height of the partition. Normal partitions in this category are112, 142, 196 and 198mm thick and can achieve partition height up to 4.2, 5.0, 7.0 and 10.0mtrs.respectively. 26 ECOPRO Demountable Panels Ecopro Demountable Panel has been designed as a simple, quick and easy to install wall/ partition to divide up space within a building into compartments/rooms. It is just as quick to remove when finished with, and can be re-used repeatedly. Honeycomb panels are manufactured by inserting 50 mm thick paper honeycomb between two 6 mm thick Ecopro (non-asbestos) boards to form a sandwich panel. These panels are light in weight and offer good sound and thermal insulation. These panels can be used in any type of new or refurbished building as internal walls/ partitions in commercial, hotels, hospitals, industrial or residential space. Installation Procedure: Materials required: Item Size Usage Trek Channel.055x65x30x15x3660mm To be fixed at floor to receive panels. Top & side.055x65x30x30x3660mm To be fixed at the top in plumb and line Channel with floor trek channel to hold the panel. Nylon plugs & screws 38mm long To fix the trek, side and top channels. 26

Frame work: Mark a chalk line on floor as per layout plan of the panel to be erected. Place the trek channel along with the chalk line marked at the floor and fix it with nylon plugs and wood screws at 450 mm centers. Again mark a chalk line on to the soffit /ceiling in line and plumb to trek channel and fix the top channel along with this line with the help of nylon plugs and screws. Take vertical channel and place it vertically at both the ends. Panel fixing: Take one panel and insert it in between the trek and top channel, push and insert it into the vertical side channel already positioned at the end to hold it in position. Insert a key into the groove of the panel. Take another panel and insert it again as explained above and push it close to the first panel through the key. Repeat the process till the wall is complete. Door /Window Opening: Mark the location of the door and place the panels around it, leaving the upper portion of the door. Place the door frame in position and adjust the side panels. Insert a panel into the upper portion of the door to fill the gap. Cut the panel to suite the window size and then insert and push them to meet the position. Insert vertical channel around the opening of the window to strengthen it. Joints Treatment(demountable partitions).joints formed between the board s edges can be covered with decorative strips of wood, PVC or metal, easily available in the market. Joints filling and finishing: Board joints are filled and finished as per recommended practice by using jointing compound &fiber tape to get a seamless finish. 27

Wall Paneling Ecopro boards used as independent lining can give a straight line and smooth surface because the G.I. frame is first made in straight line and level. The boards are then screw fixed to the frame using 25mm long self-drilling screws with under head cutter at 200mm centres. Materials: Materials Size Application Perimeter Channel 0.55x23.5x15x25x3660 mm Fixed to the floor & ceiling/ roof Ceiling Section 0.55x45x22x75x3660 mm Inserted fixed in to the perimeter 610 mm centres to receive the Ecopro Boards. Screws 25 mm Used to fix ecopro boards to the frame. Installation Procedure: Frame: First mark the line on the floor as per the drawing. Fix Perimeter channel along with this line on the floor, then fix one more channel to the slab / soffit in line and plumb to this channel. Insert ceiling section between the two perimeter channels at 610mm centres. Insert support behind the vertical ceiling section at every 4, like POP or any other solid material to hold the ceiling section in line and plumb. Board Fixing: The boards are screw fixed to the frame by using 25mm long self-drilling screws with under head cutter at 200mm centres. The screws should be 15mm away from the edges and 40mm from the corner. A gap of 1.5 to 2.0mm is provided between the board edges. Jointing and finishing: Ecopro board joints are finished with jointing compound and 48mm wide fiber tape to get a seamless finish. Cement primer (oil based) is applied on entire surface before applying putty or paint. 28

Wall Lining Ecopro boards can be screw fixed to the existing wall by using nylon sleeves and wood screws at 300mm centres. 12mm thick board should be used for this purpose. The alignment of this wall will depend on the surface of the existing wall. It will help overcome this problem but not entirely. Installation Procedure: Board Fixing: First take a 12mm thick Ecopro board and place it against the wall and mark the outer lines of the board on the wall. Drill 6mm dia. hole at 300 mm c/c in three rows (vertically) for a 1220mm wide board. Insert nylon sleeves into the holes. Again place the same board against the wall matching the marking. Screw the board with 38mm long wood screws at 300 mm centres. Repeat the process and complete the wall. The screws should be 15 mm away from the edges and 40mm from the corner. A gap of 1.5 to 2.0mm is provided between the board edges. Jointing and finishing: Ecopro board joints are finished with jointing compound and 48mm wide fiber tape to get a seamless finish. Cement primer (oil based) is applied on the entire surface before applying putty or paint. 29

Timber Frame Partition Ecopro boards can be used with wood frame. Ecopro boards can be nailed or screw fixed to the timber frame. These can be finished as seamless or featured joints. Design considerations: System Thickness Sound Insulation Height 66mm 37dB 3000mm Installation Procedure: Frame Making: The frame work for timber frame partition is made of seasoned soft wood. The wood is prepared into pieces with a cross section of 2 x2 and the length is kept as per the height of the partition. These pieces are then assembled and nailed together to make the frame to suit the size of the partition, with 2 x2 grid. This frame work is then fixed between the floor and ceiling with the help of nylon sleeves and wood screws at 450 mm centres. Board Fixing: 8mm thick Ecopro boards are then screw fixed on either side of the frame using 25mm long screws at 200mm centres (12mm away from the edge and 40mm from the corners). A gap of 1.5 to 2.00mm is provided between the edges of the boards. Joints of boards are to be staggered to avoid through passage of heat, sound and fire. Jointing and Finishing: The joints of board s edges can be finished with jointing compound and fiber tape as per recommended practice. Cement primer (Oil based) is to be used on the entire surface before applying putty or paint. Feature joints like groove design can also be achieved by screwing square edge boards at required gap or decorated with wooden/metal moldings. 30

Aluminum Frame Partition Aluminum Frame partition is made of anodized aluminum hollow tubes to form a grid of 610x610mm. 8mm thick Ecopro boards are then screw fixed on either side of all these studs at 200mm centres. All the joints of the boards are filled and finished as per recommended practice to achieve a seamless finish. Design considerations: System Thickness Sound Insulation Height 66mm 37 db 3000mm Installation Procedure : Frame Work: Anodized aluminum frame is made by using 1.2mm thick hollow tubes, 50x50mm vertically and horizontally at 610mm centres to form a regular grid of 610x610mm size. These frames are fixed to the floor and soffit at 600mm centres with nylon sleeves and wood screws. Board fixing: 8mm thick Ecopro boards are screw fixed to either side of all aluminum frame by self drilling & tapping screws having Phillips head with under head cutter, of suitable length (10mm + thickness of the board) at 200mm centres (12mm away from the edge and 40mm from the corners). The square edges of the boards are made tapered (40x1.5mm) by grinding them at site before fixing. A gap of 1.5 to 2.0mm is provided between the board edges. Board joints are to be staggered to avoid through joints. Jointing & Finishing: Ecopro board joints are finished with jointing compound and 48mm wide fiber tape to get a seamless finish. Cement primer (oil based) is applied on the entire surface before applying putty or paint. 31

ECOPRO Seamless False Ceilings False ceilings are used to minimize load (power consumption) on air-conditioners in a building, and also to add aesthetics to the soffit/roof. False ceilings can be a concealed grid(flush finish),where boards are fixed to the frame and finished to provide a seamless surface or an exposed grid type where tiles are laid into the grid. Boards can also be fixed by providing groove all around the board. 33 Installation Procedure: Framework: Ceiling level is marked on the wall/ partition as per the drawing, leaving scope for board thickness and then fix G.I. Perimeter channel to the perimeter of the wall/ partition with nylon sleeves and wood screws (38 mm long)at 600mm centres, at the required level. Line mark is done on the soffit at 1220 mm intervals in both the directions to form a 1220x1220 grid. The intersection point of these lines are to be drilled by a hammer drill machine using 13mm drill bit to insert metal plug (12 dia. x 38mm) with one leg of soffit cleat attached to it, into these holes and tight the fastener to its best. Cut G.I.Angle of size 25x10mm, longer by 6 than the distance between the level mark and soffit. One end of the angle is fixed to the soffit cleat and other to the Intermediate channel by ¼ dia. x ½ long bolt. Intermediate channels are suspended at 1220mm centres in line and level. Overlap the channels by 6 to increase the length, and bolt it at two places by ¼ dia.x ½ long bolts. Ceiling sections are then attached to the Intermediate channel at 457 mm centre perpendicularly with the help of connecting clips. Overlap the ceiling sections by 6 to increase the length of ceiling section and screw them at 4 places. Openings for light fittings / AC grills etc. can be formed by using perimeter channel all around the opening. Some extra materials like Intermediate channel, ceiling section etc may be required to maintain the integrity of the frame work. 33

Board Fixing: 6mm thick, 6 x4 size Ecopro boards are generally used for the false ceiling. Other sizes can also be used if required. The installation procedure is as under: First, the square edges of the boards are made tapered 40x1.5mm from the face side. The boards are then positioned underside of the frame keeping longitudinal edges of the board across to the ceiling sections. A gap of 1.5 to 2mm is provided all around in between the boards. The boards are screw fixed to the frame by using self drilling and tapping screws with under head cutter at 200mm centres. The screws should be 15mm away from the edges and 40 mm from the corners at an interval of 200mm. The joints between the boards are staggered in brick work style to make the ceiling rigid and properly aligned to the required level. Access Panel: Access panels are provided in suspended ceilings for repairs / maintenance purpose of the aircondition units etc. These can be made by providing additional perimeter channel around the opening and other sections to maintain the integrity of the ceiling. Ecopro board is then fixed to the frame work with self drilling screws. Joints filling & finishing: Ecopro board joints are finished with jointing compound and 48mm wide fiber tape to get a seamless finish. Cement primer (oil based) is applied on the entire surface before applying putty or paint. 34

ECOPRO O T Grid System T grid system is getting popularity in false ceilings because of its economical, easy and fast to erect frame work. These are available in Aluminum and Pre-coated steel. It is the easiest and economically most viable solution for false ceilings. It allows the client easy access to services like electrical or air- be conditioning in case of repair/ maintenance. The boards can easily be laid into the grid and cann replaced easily, if required. Materials: Item Main T - Size in mm. 36 Installation Procedure: Frame Work: Firstly a chalk line is marked on the wall or partition for the given ceiling level, as per the drawing. G.I. or pre-coated steel angle 25x25mm is screw fixed to this line with nylon sleeves and wood screws of 38mm length at not more than 450mm centres. Main T sections are then suspended 1200mm apart from the soffit using expansion fasteners, 4mm thick wire road and level clip. 1200mm long cross T sections are then inserted into the H slot of main T sections at 600 mm centres and locked together to form a grid of 1200x600 mm. 600mm long cross T sections are inserted and locked into the H slot of 1200mm long cross T to form a grid of 600x600mm. Board laying: Ecopro ceiling boards of size 595x 595mm or 1195x595mm (as the case may be) are laid into the above grid. PVC / metal holding clips can be put onto the panels through the bulb of T sections. Ceiling boards can be painted before laying into the grid, to avoid poor finishing. 36

Joints Filling and Finishing Ecopro boards are available with square edges. The joints of these boards can be jointed & finished by using Jointing Compound and fiber tape to get a seamless finish. The square edges of the boards can be made tapered (40x1.5mm) at site by using marble cutting machine. The corners can also be reinforced with fiber tape. Detailed procedure is given below: Tapered edge joints: First-coat Fill the gap between the boards with jointing compound and leave it dry. Apply Jointing compound at joint Firmly embed the 48mm wide self adhesive fiber tape centrally into the joint. Apply jointing compound on the fiber tape with tapping knife. Use sufficient pressure to ensure that the tape is firmly placed. The tape should be free from trapped air/bubbles and this application should be approx. 4 wide. Remove extra material lying outside of the joint and allow it to dry. Second coat When the first coat has dried, apply second coat of jointing compound to the joint. Ensure that the preceding application and tape is completely covered by making this application wider than the earlier. Remove extra material and allow it to dry. 37

Third coat (finishing coat) When the second coat has dried, apply a very thin layer of jointing compound to the joint little wider than the earlier, and spread it to remove visibility of the joint. Feather out joint edges to remove extra material and allow it to dry. Internal & External corner joints: Fiber tape should be used by folding it from its center making it in an angle shape (24x24mm) to accommodate both sides of the corners. This folded tape is embedded at the corners by using jointing compound as described above. Apply a thin layer of jointing compound over the previous application keeping it 6 wide. Nail / screw finishing: Note: Nail screw heads should be just below the surface of the board and should not be driven too deep. All nail/ screw heads are to be covered with the jointing compound twice to achieve the right finished surface. It is recommended that the square edges of the boards should be made tapered (40x1.5mm) at site to achieve good results instead of forming V groove. Please make sure the screws are sufficiently & properly driven and there is no movement between the board and steel section, before starting jointing & finishing. Please make sure that sufficient jointing compound is applied between the board surface and the tape. Please do not depend on the self-adhesive used with the fiber tape, because it may not be sufficient enough to hold the tape with the board surface. 38

Decoration Ecopro boards can be embellished on top with most forms of paint, wallpaper, ceramic tiles and soft or hard laminate of not more than 1mm thickness and 16sft in area, if required after doing jointing and finishing. The boards have an un-sanded finish suitable for semi gloss-acrylics or textured coatings. Before painting, remove any surface dirt, grime or the like with a soft brush. Do not use water for cleaning and ensure that the surface is completely dry before painting. Paints: Paints can be applied directly to the board surface. However, application of oil based cement primer followed by putty can result in a better looking finish. Hard Laminates: Hard laminates up to maximum1mm thickness and 16sft. area can be laminated to the board surface after doing jointing and finishing as under: Sand the whole surface with a sand paper to make it even and remove the dust with a cloth. Sand the back surface of the laminate with sand paper to make it rough. Apply Fevicol SH Or FevicolSR-998 or other similar adhesive on the laminate surface and leave it for some time, to get sticky. Apply the Fevicol SR-998 or Fevicol SH or other similar adhesive to the Ecopro board surface. Place the laminate against the board surface, matching the required line and press it hard enough with a cloth from one end to the other, to remove air between the two surfaces. Please ensure that no air is left trapped between the surfaces. Note: It is essential that the Fevicol is first applied to the laminate and not to the board surface. The board surface holds the adhesion much faster than the laminate and once dry could cause a seemingly temporary sticking of laminate and could de-bond the surface after some time. Ceramic Tiles: Ceramic tiles can be applied to the Cemply/Ecopro board surface by using branded tile adhesive. Cornices / moldings: Readymade cornices and mouldings can be screw fixed to the board surface. POP cornices cannot be made at site because the board surface sucks the water from POP and it may get cracks, however pre-casted POP cornices can be screw fixed to the board surface. 39

Curved Applications Ecopro board has an excellent dimensional stability due to its very stable crystalline structural nature. It gives forth only very small dimensional movements even under extreme temperature and humidity changes. Ecopro Boards can be bent into various curvatures to match the imagination of designers. 6 mm thick boards can be bent at a radius of 600 mm. Ecopro combines design flexibility, moisture resistance and fire resistance into one. Applications: 1. Curved partitions, ceilings, and columns in offices, hospitals, schools, concert halls, departmental stores and railway stations etc. 2. Curved areas of eaves soffits, basement car parks, kitchens, toilets and other areas of high humidity. 3. Curved areas for specially designed fire-resistant partitions, walls and panels. 40

Installation Procedure: Frame work (curved partitions/ wall linings) Mark the floor as per the layout plan. Cut the floor & ceiling channel at one side of flange through its web at every 150mm. Put this channel at the marking and bend the channel according to the layout marking. Fix it with nylon sleeves and wooden screws at every 150mm c/c to the floor. Fix head channel, as described above in plumb and line with the floor channel, at the soffit or ceiling as described above. Insert metal studs at 305mm intervals in between the floor and head channel. Check if the frame work is properly aligned and plumbed, as per the layout marked at the floor. Boarding: The boards are to be curved one by one, prior to installation by making them sufficiently wet by sprinkling water on both sides of the boards. Allow these boards to absorb water for 30minutes. Make 1220mm wide wooden structure of the required radius. Put the wet boards onto this wooden structure and try to press the boards very gently, starting from the centre to the ends, on both sides. As soon as the board gets the shape, it is to be removed from the wooden structure and placed on the floor vertically widthwise and left for air drying. All the boards are to be bent like this before fixing. Now place the first board along the frame work at one end. Start screwing the board from one end of the board by using self drilling & tapping screws 12mm away from the edges and 40mm from the corners at 200mm c/c to each metal stud and floor & ceiling channel. Complete the entire area as above. Jointing and finishing is to be done as per recommended practice. Frame work (Ceilings) Mark the floor as per the layout plan. Cut the main runner/ Intermediate channel at one side of flange through its web at every 150mm. Put this channel at the marking and bend the channel according to the layout marking. Bolt or screw this channel at the cut and bend portions to retain its shape. Suspend this shaped channel at every 1220mm intervals to the soffit with the help of metal roul plug, soffit cleat and suspension hangers. Fix secondary channel or ceiling sections to this channel in perpendicular direction at 300mm intervals with the help of connecting clips. Check if the frame work is properly aligned, as per the layout. 41

Boarding: The boards are to be curved one by one, prior to installation by making them sufficiently wet by sprinkling water on both sides of the boards as described for partition/ wall lining. Now place the first board along the frame work at one end. Start screwing the board from the centre of it, to both sides, by pushing it towards the frame and using self tapping screws 12mm away from the edges and 40mm from the corners at 200mm c/c to each metal section. Complete the entire area as above. Jointing and finishing is to be done as per recommended practice. 42

Column & Beam Encasement The building regulations require certain elements of structure to have fire resistance for a specific minimum period of time. The amount of fire protection to achieve this depends on the following: 1. Duration of fire resistance specified. 2. Type of protection used. 3. Shape and size of the steel section. The degree of fire protection depends on the Hp/A section factor for the steel section. The Hp/A factor is a function of the area of the steel exposed to the fire and the mass of the steel section. The higher the Hp/A, the faster the steel section heats up, and so greater the thickness of fire protection material required. 43

Installation Procedure: Four side encasement: Cut two pieces from the board to match the size of the width of the column. G.I. perimeter channel are screw fixed to these cut boards at their longitudinal edges, using self tapping screws at 200mm centers. Insert ceiling section between the perimeter channel at 610 mm vertical centres. These are placed vertically on both sides of the column, facing each other. Cut another two pieces to suit the length of the column/beam with twice the thickness of the boards used. Screw these new pieces to already vertically placed boards with self tapping screws at 200mm centers. Jointing and finishing can be done as usual. Three side encasement: In this case, G.I. perimeter channel is fixed to the wall or partition on both sides of the column. A piece of board is cut to the size of opposite side and G.I. Perimeter channel is screw fixed on the longitudinal edges of the cut piece. This is placed vertically with just opposite side of the column. Another piece cut from the board (actual measurement + thickness of the boards used) is screw fixed to both the perimeter channel fixed to the wall/ partition at 200mm centres with self tapping screws. Another piece cut from the board as above is screw fixed to other side of the column to both, the perimeter channels fixed to the wall/ partition and the Perimeter channel of vertically placed board at 200mm centres with self tapping screws. Jointing and finishing can be done as usual. Two side encasement: G.I. perimeter channel are fixed to the walls/ partition on both sides of the column with metal fasteners at 450mm centres. A piece of board is cut to the size of one side and the perimeter channel is screw fixed to one of the edge of this cut piece at 200mm centres. This is placed against the column, keeping the perimeter channel side opposite to the wall. Other edge of this board is screw fixed to the already fixed perimeter channel (with the wall / partition) at 200mm centres with self tapping screws. Another piece cut to size is screw fixed to the remaining side of the column at 200mm centres with self tapping screws. Jointing and finishing can be done as usual. Services: Service should be incorporated as the work progresses. 44

Duct Encasement A/C ducts are often encased to offer an aesthetic look to the area. The installation can be done at site by using different G.I. channels and Ecopro boards. The procedure is as under: G.I. perimeter channel is fixed to the slab on the both sides of the duct. Ceiling section is cut and bent to form a U shape and 2 bigger in size. Intermediate channel is suspended from the soffit along the length of the duct. U shaped ceiling sections are then inserted fixed into the perimeter channels already fixed on both sides of the duct. These sections are also connected to the intermediate channel with connecting clips. Ecopro boards are then screw fixed to all the channels by self tapping screws at 200 mm centres. Services: Service should be incorporated as the work progresses. 45

Mezzanine Flooring Mezzanine Floor is an intermediate storey, especially a low one, between the ground and first floor of a building. Mezzanine floor often saves major expenses and the trouble of relocation, as the floor is installed within the existing floor of the building or inside a room. It is always possible to relocate or extend a mezzanine floor if necessary and can be rebuilt as per requirements. Mezzanine floor is a steel or concrete platform that is raised from the normal floor level and makes up for an intermediate floor, under the actual ceiling. Ecopro boards can be screw fixed to the sub-frame of steel grid not more than 2 x 2, as shown here under: Installation Procedure: Frame: Steel is prepared preferably with steel tube of size 50x50 mm. The grid size should not be more than 2 x2 centre to centre. Ecopro Board Fixing: 18 mm thick Ecopro boards are screw fixed to the steel tube grid with 35 mm long self drilling and tapping screw with under head cutter, at 200 mm centres. A gap of 1.5 mm is provided between the board edges. The board surface can be finished with ceramic tiles or vinyl floor coverings etc. 46

Fire Protection A fire-safe building is a good building. The requirement for the fire characteristics of building materials are specified in terms of the performance achieved in standard fire tests.these fire test methods are contained in various parts of British Standard- 476 and are as under: NON-COMBUSTIBILITY: Building materials are classified as combustible or non-combustible according to their behavior when tested to BS 476-Part 4:1970. This test provides a measure of the propensity of materials to generate heat and flames under standardized heat exposure conditions. It represents the highest and most stringent standard for the fire performance of materials. SURFACE SPREAD OF FLAME: The test to BS-476-Part-7: 1971 is used to determine the tendency of materials to support the spread of flame across their surfaces. Materials are classified Class-1 to Class-4, in descending order of performance. These classifications are applied mainly to wall and ceilings. FIRE PROPAGATION: The test to BS-476-Part-6: 1968 provides a means of measuring the rate of heat evolution of materials exposed to flames and radiant heat. The performance is expressed as a numerical index (I) which ranges in value from 0 to 100or more. Low value indicates a low rate of heat release. (I) is the total of three sub-indices (i 1 ), (i 2 )&(i 3 ), which are based respectively on the heat released over the period of 0-3 minutes,4-10 minutes and minutes. A high value of (i) indicates ease of ignition and early heat release, both detrimental to the performance of the materials. The lower the value of (I), better is the performance. FIRE RESISTANCE: Fire resistance is the performance of a complete element of construction, which may consist of a number of different materials. Fire resistance is determined by tests to BS-476- Part -20 & , Fire test on Building Materials and structures, in which a specimen is subjected to heating conditions based on a standard temperature/ time curve. The fire resistance of a specimen is the time (in minutes) for which it continues to meet the appropriate criteria, or the time at which the test is terminated. The criteria of failure (for non load-bearing construction) are as under: Stability: The construction failure occurs when the specimen collapses. Integrity: When the construction develops cracks/ or other openings through which flames or hot gases can pass to ignite a specified cotton wool pad. Insulation: Insulation failure occurs when the mean temperature of unexposed face increases by more than 140degrees C above the initial temperature or the temperature at any point increases by 180 degrees C above the initial temperature. 47

CAVITY BARRIERS Smoke tends to cause more harm to human life during fires than heat, flames or structural collapse. The purpose of a cavity barrier is to prevent the spread of smoke and flame from penetrating and / or moving within a concealed space in a fire compartment. If a barrier in a concealed space coincides with a compartment wall or floor, it will normally be required to provide the same fire performance as the wall or floor. There are two types of cavity barriers, one is a small cavity barrier and the other is a large cavity barrier. A large cavity barrier is defined as a barrier across a void in which a square of 1meter sides can be accommodated. A small cavity barrier is a barrier that cannot accommodate a square with 1 meter sides. A large cavity barrier is required to provide 30 minutes integrity and 15 minutes insulation where a small cavity barrier can provide 30 minutes integrity. Perimeter of a partition is formed by metal channels & studs fixed to the floor/ceiling & wall/partition. Though these sections are considered satisfactory closer to the flame & smoke, to maintain the continuity of the barrier, Boards are cut to a good fit and screw fixed to the web of the floor ceiling channel and the studs abutting the wall/partition to prevent direct communication with an adjoining cavity. Design consideration: The following points are some of the factors which should be considered when determining the correct specification to ensure the cavity barrier will provide the required fire performance. 1. Size of barrier & location: As mentioned above there may be occasions when the required performance of the barrier will differ from the general requirement of 30 minutes integrity and 15 minutes insulation, e.g. if it is located above a compartment wall. 2. Differential Movement: Cavity barriers are often located between two building elements that may move at different rates in normal conditions and /or in the event of a fire e.g. a floor and a suspended ceiling. The design of the barrier must therefore make allowance for such a movement, whilst still maintaining the required level of integrity and insulation. 3. Service Penetration: Suitable fire stopping system is needed around any penetration of services through the barrier. Allowance should be made for movement of the services in both ambient and fire conditions, to ensure loads are not applied to the cavity barrier. 4. Adjoining Structure: It is essential that the surrounding building element e.g. roof, floor or walls, do not collapse in the event of a fire. A cavity barrier in a roof space, for example, will require that the roof truss which it is secured to, is also protected to prevent collapse when exposed to fire. 48

Sound Insulation Providing acoustical treatment to the building or the space we occupy is very important to manage/control/restrict sound. Sound absorption does not substitute sound insulation since both are known to be quite different. These are defined as under: Sound Absorption: Sound absorption is the term which describes the loss of sound energy on reflection at a surface. Sound absorbent surfaces are used to provide a correct acoustic climate in a room. The acoustic efficiency of a sound absorbent material is indicated by the absorption coefficient. The absorption coefficient for normal incidence is a more exactly measurable property of the material. It is measured in the impedance tube on small-scale samples. This enables accurate computations to be made of the acoustical properties of a room. The materials used should also have good appearance, durability and fire resistance. Sound Insulation: Sound insulation describes the reduction of sound which passes between two spaces separated by a dividing element. The sound energy, during transmission, passes through the dividing element (direct transmission) or / and through the surroundings (indirect transmission) like walls, floors, ceilings ducts, windows and door openings. Therefore both the methods should be taken into consideration, while designing. Optimum sound insulation can be achieved by carefully selecting systems which offer compatibility with their surroundings whilst providing the minimum desired level of insulation. The procedure is to mount the test specimen as a partition between two reverberation rooms (for even distribution of sound). The rooms are so arranged and constructed that the only significant sound transmission between them is through the specimen only. The sound pressure levels are measured in the source and receiving rooms both. This gives the intensity incident on the panel and transmitted by the panel respectively. The reverberation time of the receiving room is also measured. The sound reduction index is calculated accordingly. Measurements: The level of sound is measured in decibels(db). Sound insulation varies with frequency and measurements are made of one-third octave intervals in the range of Hertz (Hz), which encompasses every day sounds. Sources of sound leakage: 1. Doors/ Windows 2. Air conditioners and continuous run of ducts 3. Cracks/ holes and gapes 4. Electrical outlets and service pipes 5. Suspended ceilings / partitions. 6. A common floor ducts 7. Untreated Common ventilation systems. 8. Partition s performance. Improvement on sound insulation of existing walls / partitions: When traditional / remedial methods do not satisfactorily work, the sound insulation of existing walls / partitions can be further improved by providing a layer or lining with Ecopro Boards. The linings not only provide sound insulation but also provide good thermal insulation. 49

Thermal Insulation Thermal insulation relates to the temperature variation within a building due to the environmental conditions, like buildings with centralized air-conditioning will require to protect its coolness and not allow it to go out. Good thermal insulated materials can block the passage of external heat from penetrating cooled areas. Alternatively, buildings with higher temperature inside than outside could lose heat. Good thermal insulated materials, with low Thermal Conductivity serve as a protection here and also helps in keeping the cost for cooling or heating relatively lower. Ecopro boards are extensively used for both environments, in new as well as existing buildings. Thermal Conductivity (K): Thermal Conductivity is the measure of a material s ability to transmit heat. It is expressed as heat flow in watts per square meter of surface area for a temperature gradient of one Kelvin(K) per meter thickness, and is expressed as W/mK. Generally dense materials have a high thermal conductivity and are inefficient thermal insulating materials. Light-weight materials have low conductivity and act as effective thermal insulating materials. The lower the (K) value of a material, the better is its insulating efficiency. Thermal resistance (R): Thermal resistance is the measure of resistance to passage of heat offered by the thickness of a material and is expressed as m 2 K/W. Thermal resistance of material is obtained by dividing thickness of material in meter by its thermal conductivity ( K) value. (R=Thickness in meters / K value) Thermal Transmittance (U): Thermal transmittance of a building element is a property of its whole construction including air spaces, and is the measure of its ability to transmit heat under steady state condition. It is calculated by taking reciprocal of the sum of all individual thermal resistances. It is expressed as W/m 2 K. The lower the (U) value of the element, the better is its thermal insulation. U value = 1 / R 1 +R 2 +R 3 + ( where R 1, R 2, R 3 are thermal resistance of different elements of construction) Conversion factor for thermal insulation calculation: Thermal Conductivity (K) Unit W/mK Kcal/ mh deg.
