3 MODELING INTERIOR WALLS There are a number of ways to start placing interior walls in the model. Interior Walls (typically Single Layer walls) can be created from Spaces if they exist or by directly placing them in the model. In most cases, it is beneficial to model the interior walls for each floor in a separate model file. CREATE WALLS FROM SPACES If Spaces have been placed in the model to layout an initial Space Program it is very easy to create selection sets of those spaces and quickly create the initial walls in the model. To create a selection set based on the family and part attributes of the Space use the Select by Attributes tool. Select By Attributes The Select By Attributes tool is accessed from the Main Building Designer task bar. In the Select By Attributes main dialog box, click Clear Selection and Initialize Settings to remove any previous settings. Page 3 of 10 v2.0

4 Choose Building from the Criteria menu. The Selector Criteria Building dialog box opens. This dialog box opens condensed, so expand the Part section. In the Selector Criteria Building dialog box, turn on the Family and Part check boxes. From the Family menu, select Space and in the Part, select the space part that needs walls, or do not select a Part to select all the Spaces. Back in the Select By Attributes dialog box, verify the following settings in the Mode section of the dialog box: the Master Only radio button is on, and both pull-down menus are set to Inclusive and Selection. Click the Apply button at the bottom of the dialog box. AECOsim Building Designer pauses as it searches through all the levels and elements in the design file. Once it has found all the elements matching the search criteria, those elements are highlighted. Create Walls From Spaces Once the selection set is made the Create Walls from Spaces tool can be used to trace single leaf walls over the outside boundary of the space shapes. In AECOsimBD-A05-Modeling Exterior Walls individual space shapes were selected in order to create the exterior walls. When individual space shapes are selected, the wall can be placed on the inside or outside of the space shape, or center the wall on the space shape edge. When walls are created from a selection set of spaces, walls are placed by center, meaning the centers of the walls are the same as the edges of the space shape. Duplicate walls are removed when spaces share a common edge. During this process, the space shapes are redrawn so that the space shape edges are coincident with the inside of the walls which bound them, and space areas are automatically recalculated and will become associated with their bounding walls. Please note, when tracing a selection set of spaces the space shapes adjust and align with the inside faces of the bounding walls. For rectangular spaces, the length and width of the space is reduced by the width of the wall. For best results, original space shapes should be created with this in mind. SpacePlanner includes an option to easily and automatically increase spaces by a wall width factor. Page 4 of 10 v2.0

5 The Create Walls From Space tool utilizes the Place Wall tool settings window. Some settings options are not applicable for this command and are disabled. With space shapes preselected and in an active selection set, select the Create Walls From Space tool. Select a wall type from the pull-down menu and set the Height. The Width will be determined from the wall type selected. Complete any additional tool settings on the Properties tab and enter a data point to create space walls. All single leaf wall types placed using this tool are supported by DataGroup System. DataGroup data is applied to walls at the time of placement. AECOsim Building Designer s Unification handles the majority of all wall clean-up. However, walls may be created that are not necessary for the interior wall model, such as exterior walls. A best practice policy is to attach the exterior wall reference and delete any duplicated walls. The spaces can be re-associated with a combination of the interior walls and the referenced exterior walls (be sure reference locate is turned ON), by using the Update Space tool. Page 5 of 10 v2.0

6 PLACE WALLS Alternatively, the Place Wall tool can be used to place linear, arc, and curved, single layer and compound walls directly into the model. Walls are defined by points which include the start point and the end point, possibly intermediate points and perhaps a center point in the case of an arc. All wall types placed using this tool are supported by DataGroup System. DataGroup data is applied to walls at the time of placement. The Place Wall tool is found on the Architectural Task bar and will open the Place Wall dialog. Select a Wall Type from the Catalog Instances in the pull-down. These walls are organized and filtered based on Type; Schematic, Wall, Partition, Shaft, Chase, Furring, CurtainWall, and individual Wall Components. They are then further filtered by Compound and Single Layer Walls. Select a Placement Option; Linear, Arc or Curve. Select an Orientation; Left, Right, or Center. The Close option will create a wall that automatically closes on itself. The Auto Connect option will automatically clean up the wall with any adjacent walls. Define the Height, the Width should be determined by the Wall Type. Enter data points, following the prompts in the lower left of the interface. Continue to place additional wall segments by entering a data point or Reset to stop. Use the Edit Catalog Organization icon to edit the organization of the Wall Type pull-down. Page 6 of 10 v2.0

7 MODIFYING WALLS Once Walls are placed in the model, there are a number of tools available to modify the walls. All of the tools are available on the Architectural Task bar, but for a condensed list of just the tools used to modify a wall right-click on any existing wall. Modify Wall The Modify Wall tool is used to modify instance data on single and multiple selection sets of walls. Select the Properties to be modified, such as the Wall Type, the Height, or the Value of any DataGroup Properties and accept modifications with a Data Point, or reject with a Reset. Modify Wall Geometry The Modify Wall Geometry or Modify Form tool can used to make adjustments to the height, thickness and length of a wall. It can also be used to extend the height and length of a wall to another form or group of forms such as the underside of structure or a roof. Click on the specific modify tool icon in the tool settings window to select the type of form modification. Select the Method, and type in any required Distance or Absolute Value. 8 Wall Clean Up The Wall Clean Up or Connect Forms tool is used to create connections between two wall forms. Click the icon for the type of connection to make, select the walls to connect, following the prompts in the lower left of the interface. Break Wall The Break Wall tool is used to break existing walls into individual wall segments. With characteristics similar to the Partial Delete tool, this wall tool breaks intelligent parametric model walls into separate walls and maintains legacy data and relationships on newly created wall segments. Select the wall to break. The wall highlights and directional arrows appear that move dynamically with the pointer. Move the pointer in the direction where the break will form and enter a data point to accept or reset to reject. The start point for the break is placed when the wall is identified and the end point for the break is placed when the break is accepted. Join Walls The Join Wall tool is used to join two or more existing straight linear walls to create a single wall. The new wall is created on a line that extends from the first wall selected. Properties (including symbology, part and family data) from the first wall (identified during the joining sequence) are propagated to the second wall (that is identified). The Join Walls tool can be used to combine multiple collinear walls into a single wall. Copy, Move, Rotate, Mirror In addition, the standard Copy, Move, Rotate and Mirror functions can be used on Building objects, such as walls. Edit Handles Use the Element Selection tool to select a wall (or linear, arc, segmented arc, curve, slab, or free form) and use the editing handles to move, modify and make changes graphically. 9 Once selected with the active Element Selection tool, a set of handles appear on an object when it is selected. Note, it is possible to Disable Edit Handles on the Element Selection tool. After an object is selected and handles displayed, a tool tip indicates what each handle represents when the pointer is passed over it. For example: a tool tip can report a start point or end point, a side, roof, or floor. With handles selected, designers can modify and manipulate features by clicking and dragging the relevant handle. In addition, multiple handles can be selected and used simultaneously. This is particularly useful for complex objects, in situations where multiple faces need to be modified and manipulated together. To select or deselect multiple handles, hold down the <Ctrl> key and use a data point on each required handle (the handles will highlight when selected). With multiple handles selected designers can modify and manipulate multiple features (handles) by clicking and dragging any selected (highlighted) handle. Heads Up Display AECOsim Building Designer's Heads Up Display provides instant visual feedback during design project workflow at the point in the interface where attention is focused. Heads Up Display facilitates modifications without searching for other commands. Accurate relationships between Building parts is extremely important. This means placement of dimensions that tie components to fixed points is critical. Dimensional visual feedback, in the form of Heads Up Display, assists designers in the accurate placement of architectural elements and the feedback displays in the area where workflow attention is focused. 10 Heads Up Display dimensions display when components, such as walls, are selected with the Element Selection tool. When heads up dimensions are active, designers can select a dimension to modify the dimension value and the position of the component. In this image, a wall is selected to activate Heads Up Display dimensions. Note that the wall highlights and a dimension to the selected wall is then selected for modification. Also note that the selected dimension highlights. The dimension value opens in a Heads Up Display dimension editor. When the designer changes the value of the dimension and clicks the check mark to accept the modification, the Heads Up Display dimension value changes and the wall (or applicable component) dynamically moves into the new position. The designer can also click the close button to reject the change. With the Element Selection tool active, Heads Up Display dimensions are cleared with a data point in open space.
