Belarus: Eurocodes obligatory for RC structures since , for steel and aluminium - since Kazakhstan: Eurocodes implemented since , coexistence with the old Norms until Algeria: The National Highways Agency awarded EUR 11 million contract to the Spanish Technology Group INDRA to modernise the motorway tunnel of Bouira, including adaptation the requirements of the Eurocodes. 17 Past Projects on Seismic Risk Assessment Past EU projects: Lesloss (2007) and Syner-G (2012) Systemic Vulnerability, Socio-economic Impacts USA: development of Hazus, multihazard tool used at national level no similar tool and such widely used has been developed in Europe USA-FEMA Annualized Earthquake Losses Ratio (AELR) Europe: need for assessing seismic risk at regional level for implementing and assessing/adopting strategies at European level for the reduction of seismic risk 26 January

18 Needs at European level Development of a harmonized framework for seismic risk assessment at EU level (profit from SYNER-G and GEM). Investing for developing a database of EU building stock (INSPIRE, Census, remote sensing, crowd sourcing, etc.) at different levels of granularity Achieve harmonised typologies for exposed assets and corresponding fragilities (starting from the SYNER-G approach) 26 January

19 Conclusion Ensure that Eurocodes remain the stateof-the-art and updated norms, which requires maintaining pre-normative research Speed up the process of seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings, on the basis of life-cycle analysis; taking advantage of deep energy retrofitting (economies of scale) Further integrate Seismology and Earthquake Engineering: Use the SERIES and NERA projects through the ESFRI Instrument to adopt a strategy at pan- European level for seismic risk mitigation. 26 January
