As BIM consultants, we are involved in various projects in Europe, Qatar and Egypt.

3 Autumn F o r e w o r d Germany embraces BIM with open hands Dear Reader, With more and more countries beginning to think of including Building Information Modeling as part of their government regulations, it has been an exciting year for all of us. This year, ViCon participated at the Building Information Modeling working group organized by the Reformkommission Bau von Großprojekten in Germany. The commission is represented by 32 leading fi gures of politics, business, science and administration and is set up to fi nd ways for preventing economic losses and risks to the international competitiveness of German construction industry. The Commission believed that BIM was one of the important methods to achieve these goals and has paved the way for the upcoming demand for BIM in near future. HOAI, the framework of the fee structure for German architects and engineers, has also given recognition to the business value of BIM in the planning phases by including BIM in its new amendments of Additionally, the successful launch of 4 consecutive BIM user days in Qatar has been a high-fl ying feather in our cap. The events not only proved the rising enthusiasm for BIM in the industry but also confi rmed ViCon s presence as a BIM leader in the country. Our initiatives to take BIM into the sphere of project management by creating our own comprehensive production system have enabled our clients to get maximum value out of their investments. Our project Katharinenquartier in Hamburg is an example of how new technologies can be utilized to increase collaboration among project teams and increase effi ciencies. 4 4 ViCon Dimensions P r o j e c t U p d a t e Katharinenquartier in Hamburg [Germany] Right besides the second oldest church in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, sqm of mixed use project development has been under construction since spring attractive apartments alongside office and commercial spaces will be built in three houses of 6-7 storeys. Having more than 1700 rooms and 400 shaft segments to manage, the project management of this large facility is challenged with piles of drawings, photos, test records and other documents being generated every day. To enhance efficiency in these project processes, HOCHTIEF ViCon developed an innovative production system that combines its expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM) with the latest technologies of mobile devices. The online interface of the system carries a 3D model of the project that is linked to an organized set of information such as project schedule, construction status, inspection results, quality assurance reports, performance indicators, photos, documents and drawings pertaining to each specific room. On site, engineers are provided with customized digital forms for recording data on hand-held devices such as ipads. Acquired data is automatically sorted into the online platform and links itself to its corresponding location in the 3D model. Such a system not only offers the possibility of monitoring the site progress in real-time but also simultaneously records as-built situation of the constructed facility. For example, pictures and test records of hidden mechanical or plumbing services in the walls can quickly be identified in the online platform and its related documentation can be referred before making any maintenance alterations. For operation and maintenance phases, such efficiency can prove to be a huge time and cost-saving advantage. Often, in many legal disputes, the lack of documentation or the inability to locate the right information at the right time is a cause of financial or legal consequence. A model-based production system enables the client to protect himself by using up-to-date and reliable information in critical times. Additionally, the system is designed with an easy-to-use interface which does not require any specialized training. It allows multiple users of the project to work together at the same time. The permission to access data can also be customized. No prior knowledge of BIM or any specific software is needed to operate this system; opening the opportunity for wide array of stakeholders to input, manage and monitor the required data anytime from anywhere. With this technology fully in-place, Katharinenquartier project team and ViCon has together taken BIM into a new sphere of project management. 5 Autumn D model of structure and MEP B I M R o l e s BIM Modeler The role of a BIM Modeler is crucial in supporting BIM over the entire life-cycle of a project. At the heart of Building Information Modeling is the information-rich 3D model which acts as a reliable basis to carry out project analysis. The quality of the BIM project depends on how precisely and with what capabilities these models are built. The BIM Modeler is an experienced 3D draftsman, who understands the engineering drawings, available drawing standards and vital BIM processes in order to generate accurate 3D models at the level of detail required during different stages of the project. Depending on the BIM strategy, he/she creates the 3D model from the scratch, or based on 2D drawings. He/she may also be responsible for creating, maintaining and updating the BIM library, utilizing survey or point cloud data for modeling. In-depth and current know-how of BIM software and technology is a key prerequisite for BIM Modelers. In complex projects, BIM Modelers may also be required to work on-site, either for the design consultant or for the contractor, as during construction and operation phases the model needs to be continuously updated to the as-built conditions on-site. BIM Modelers also support the BIM Engineer and BIM Manager, for example as they create project-based BIM standards, address design coordination issues or develop time-based 4D and cost-based 5D models. While the BIM Modeler specializes mostly on the technology aspects of creating the 3D model, the BIM Manager and BIM Engineer are more strongly focused on the people, processes and policy issues, as discussed in previous issues of ViCon Dimensions.

6 6 ViCon Dimensions S e r v i c e F o c u s BIM management during construction Building Information Modeling s (BIM) large scale adoption during preconstruction phases has brought more confidence in project teams to experiment and extend the scope of BIM during and after construction phase. The challenge to utilize BIM in its complete lifecycle is the difficulty to acquire on-site real-time data, analyze it and then distribute it to the right people at the right time. For BIM to find its feet on construction sites, a competent BIM Manager and a comprehensive project management system that he establishes in a project are essential. To support BIM Managers, an integrated technology is required that can acquire on-site data more efficiently and further re-use it for variety of applications required by different stakeholders. That can be seen as a 3-part-process which links a 3D model with the database of the project and makes it available for all project teams to re-use the information in their specialized fields. The first part is about data acquisition. Next to existing project data e.g. schedules, documents and so on, mobile devices can be used by construction managers to acquire on-site data faster than ever before. Customized forms are specifically designed for the project. Secondly, the collected data is connected to the online information system where it is linked with the 3D model of the project. Here, the numerical and geometrical data is processed and arranged automatically according to its relevance. The business value is achieved in the third part where the data is utilized and presented for variety of applications such as management reporting, quantity take-off, cost estimations, design coordination and clash-detection, photo-documentation, approval schedules and many other functions. To support this process HOCHTIEF ViCon has developed a BIM-based production system. Being an online system, the database is available to all stakeholders anytime from anywhere. The bidirectional connection between the 3D model and the database not only saves significant time and cost but facilitates the decision-making process of project managers. 8 8 ViCon Dimensions B I M D e f i n i t i o n s BIM Implementation Plan Implementation is the process of moving an idea from concept to reality. An effective implementation involves a large number of inter-related tasks organized to be carried out in a predefined sequence. In a BIM workflow, multiple stakeholders are required to collaborate and share information with each other. But often the information is at risk of being manipulated or misinterpreted, making project partners reluctant in using BIM successfully. The BIM Implementation Plan, also known as the BIM Execution Plan is an instrument that plays an important role in assisting all parties to be aware of opportunities and responsibilities associated with using BIM. Based on our experience of implementing BIM on variety of projects, we have defined 7 key components that build a BIM Implementation Plan. Project analysis: It includes the current project status; stakeholder analysis; current method for design coordination, progress monitoring and cost analysis; and the general project risks and needs. Proposed BIM scope: The BIM knowledge and experience of project stakeholders should be examined and realistic BIM goals should be set. BIM activities and responsibilities: Combining the BIM capabilities of stakeholders and the BIM goals for the project, a responsibility matrix may be developed to define the activities, responsibilities and roles of each participating stakeholder. Knowledge exchange: Efficiency is achieved by a drive to continuously improve. Thus, the need for knowledge transfer and training should be examined. Ideally BIM training and knowledge exchange will take place on-the-job. BIM processes: With complex loops of information exchanges comes the need for maintaining a consistent workflow. 9 Autumn as well as to control the quality of all the resulting BIM models. It may be an iterative process before all parties agree on a common work methodology, but it is essential to establish a protocol that is followed throughout the project life-cycle. Timeline for BIM Implementation: A realistic BIM implementation schedule should be developed and aligned with the overall project execution schedule. Installation of BIM within the project: A designated BIM Manager (internal or external) should be integrated in the structure of a project organization with the consent of all parties. This gives the manager enough authority and responsibility to drive the BIM implementation process. A BIM Implementation Plan is considered to be a stepping stone for a project as BIM management strategy, BIM protocols, BIM standards and specifications are eventually created based on its principles. It is also important to understand that any implementation process brings with it a need for adaptation and adjustments to changes. BIM Implementation is no different. Thus, a BIM Implementation Plan should also be made flexible so that it can be revised with the developments in technology, processes, people and policies of the project. 10 10 ViCon Dimensions B I M N e t w o r k 3rd BIM User Day [Qatar] Qatar encourages the development of skilled people to get the best out of BIM on the 3rd Qatar BIM User Day held on 30th April, Attended by more than 180 participants from 90 companies, the third event in the non-profit series initiated by Qatar University and HOCHTIEF ViCon and Teesside University has marked a milestone for establishing Qatar as a platform for BIM knowledge transfer in the Middle East region. By end of this year, Qatar University showed its intention to start BIM education and certification. Good employees are indispensable for success with BIM. 11 Autumn B I M M a r k e t N e w s HOAI and BIM [Germany] B I M N e t w o r k BIM User Conference [Germany] The focus of the buildingsmart event on 18th June 2013 in Hamburg was on the practical implementation of BIM in planning and building industry. The discussions also revolved around the quality of data exchange, IFC interface, certification and issues of user acceptance. Sharing the personal experiences on BIM implementation on construction sites, HOCHTIEF ViCon addressed the challenges of using BIM for project management. Kai Brandt, Project Manager at HOCHTIEF ViCon explained: Project Managers on construction sites do not have the time or interest to use complex technology. BIM processes need to be simplified with an easy-to-use interface. We have found using simple mobile devices to quickly acquire data and automatically transfer them into a BIM system greatly helps users adopt modelbased data management and its advantages. Typical use-cases shown were of photo-documentation, inspections and tests, quality checks, progress reporting and logging of defects. The framework of the fee structure for German architects and engineers HOAI (Honorarordnung für Architekten und Ingenieure) and its impact while adapting BIM has long been discussed among German project teams. The amendment of HOAI in 2013 has not only seen some fundamental The possibility to deploy a private cloud instead of a public cloud such as the one provided by Google or Amazon, now gives individual AEC businesses more control over their project and creates a favorable condition for implementing BIM.
