3 INTRODUCTION Design & construction of buildings in GCC is currently experiencing a paradigm shift. The economic meltdown has forced all the project parties to start looking at processes that can help them get a better quality building with less investment. Building Information Modelling has become a buzzword in the industry and contractors are talking about reducing wastage and increasing profit margins. Profit margins are already under much pressure due to cut throat competition, but the question everybody is asking Will I really be able to create a difference for my company & for my client, with Building Information Modelling. If so, how will I do it? WHAT IS THE BIM SURVEY? BIM or Building Information Modelling is quite a misunderstood term in the GCC as the awareness levels differ from region to region and from person to person. Hence buildingsmart Middle East has taken the first step by conducting a GCC wide BIM survey. The results of the survey will let us know that where we are; where we want to be in next 3 years and what are the gaps that need to be bridged to make BIM successfully support Build projects in the Middle East OBJECTIVE OF THE SURVEY IS: To comprehend and document the BIM awareness and the current BIM experience in GCC region. Analyse the short term & long term effects of the improper understanding of the process/terminologies & technologies involved Compare GCC results with McGraw-Hill BIM survey results and the Gap analysis. Identify the existing gaps in the knowledge / training / human resource etc. Identify the myths surrounding BIM implementation Publish local BIM success stories. Analyse the short term & long term effects of the delayed adoption of BIM Evaluate what significant cost savings can be made on a project

4 HOW THE SURVEY SUPPORTS THE INDUSTRY SURVEY SAMPLE Survey sample would include the potential BIM adopters and the following professionals that are needed in order to manage a project Owners/ Developers Regulatory Authorities and Government Organisations Construction Managers Project Managers Architects / Engineering / MEP Consultants Main Contractors Interior Contractors MEP & Other Sub Contractors Suppliers Facility Managers Survey results shall be published during buildingsmart annual conference 2010, to be held later this year in Abu Dhabi. Government authorities and policy makers in the region shall have the first hand information about the findings and hence the survey results shall influence the future design & construction policy decisions in the region. BuildingSMART ME shall make a Professional BIM adoption roadmap based on the survey findings. Members of buildingsmart shall be able to participate in the roadmap. GCC BIM REPORT DISTRIBUTION The report will be published in print and web versions. There will be two versions of the survey report; A summary report (distributed FREE) A full report (Published price) Both reports will be available as downloads from the buildingsmart ME website. The full version will be distributed to all the survey participants that would include top decision makers from; Owners/ Developers Regulatory Authorities and Government Organisations Construction Managers Project Managers Architects / Engineering / MEP Consultants Main Contractors Interior Contractors MEP & Other Sub Contractors Suppliers Facility Managers The summary report will be; Distributed to all the attendees of Build Smart 2010 conference Distributed to all the subscribers of BIM Journal (includes senior decision makers in the region) Available for download from buildingsmart ME website Published in all the significant media in GCC Survey participants shall be able to voice their opinions about their BIM related needs, wants & desires. BIM success case studies shall provide a prototype that could be replicated by others in the industry. BuildingSMART annual conference 2010 shall work to eradicate the myths surrounding BIM adoption in the region.
