1 Product Information Sheet FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation Introduction FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation from Unifrax is a hightemperature insulation blanket specifically designed to provide a flexible enclosure for one- and two-hour rated HVAC ducts, which are also called ventilation air ducts (VAD). It can also be used for kitchen exhaust ducts when specifications require a UL-classified system. FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation provides a tested, alternate fire protective enclosure in lieu of constructing a traditional shaft wall enclosure. FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation offers the following product features: High-temperature, biosoluble insulation Zero clearance to combustibles 1- and 2-hour fire endurance rating Lightweight, flexible product form Easy to cut, fabricate and install around ducts Scrim encapsulated for durability and resistance to grease absorption. Product Components Core Material: FyreWrap 1.5 incorporates Insulfrax Thermal Insulation as its core material. Insulfrax is a high-temperature insulation made from a calcia, magnesia, silica chemistry designed to enhance biosolubility. It provides excellent insulation in a noncombustible blanket product form. Encapsulating Material: The core insulation blanket is completely encapsulated in an aluminum foil fiberglass reinforced scrim covering. This scrim provides additional handling strength as well as protection from moisture absorption and tearing. Typical Product Parameters Thickness 1.5" Density 8pcf Standard Covering Scrim Encapsulated Optional Product Form Unfaced Blanket Product Availability 24"w x 25LF 48"w x 25LF Complies with: NFPA 96, 2003 International Mechanical Code (IMC), 2003 International Building Code (IBC), 1999 BOCA National Building Code, 1999 Standard Building Code, 1997 Standard Mechanical Code, 1997 Uniform Building Code. Data are average results of tests conducted under standard procedures and are subject to variation. Results should not be used for specification purposes. The material shall be installed with a 3" perimeter and 3" longitudinal overlap. See Figure 1 for details. To temporarily secure the insulation, optional use of 1" wide filament tape is permitted. Install the tape 1 1 2" from the blanket edge and approximately " on center. Utilize stainless steel banding to permanently attach the material, placing the banding over the tape in the same locations. Tighten banding to firmly hold the wrap system in place, but not so tight as to cut or damage the blanket. For ducts with spans greater than 24" wide, steel insulation pins shall be welded on the bottom of horizontal ducts and continue on the outside of vertical duct rises. Space in columns 12" on center, 6"-12" from each duct edge and " apart. FyreWrap 1.5 is impaled over the pins and held in place with speed clips to keep the system from sagging. Exposed ends of pins shall be bent over to eliminate safety hazards. Figure 1. 3 Installation:Two Layer System FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation consists of a two-layer system (total thickness = 3.0") applied directly on to the duct surface. See Figure 3 for details. The first layer of FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation shall be installed so all perimeter and longitudinal seams form butt joints. The second layer of FyreWrap 1.5 is installed with 3" perimeter and 3" longitudinal overlaps. The second-layer joints should be offset from the first-layer joints by a minimum 12". Seal all cut edges with aluminum foil tape. To temporarily secure the insulation, optional use of 1" wide filament tape is permitted. Install the tape 1 1 2" from the blanket edge and approximately " on center. Utilize stainless steel banding to permanently attach the material, placing the banding over the tape in the same locations. A gasket of 0.5" thick unfaced FyreWrap 1.5 or RCF blanket is initially installed between the duct and the access door cover. Weld threaded rod to each corner of the access door opening. Cover with steel sleeves (optional) for easy removal of blanket. Weld at least five steel insulation pins to the outside of the door cover panel, four located 1" from each corner, one at the door cover center and additional pins on maximum 12" centers if appropriate. Cut through the two layers of FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation already wrapping the duct and covering the access door opening. Leave the interior piece in place. Cut back the second layer to form an opening with dimensions 1" greater than the interior piece. Cut a piece of FyreWrap 1.5 that matches the dimensions of the opening created as a result of removing the exterior piece. Install over pins to fit tightly within the material cut away. Cut an additional (third) piece of FyreWrap 1.5 insulation with dimensions 1" wider than the installed pieces covering the access door opening. In-stall over the insulation pins to form a 1" step joint with the exterior layer. Seal all cut edges with aluminum foil tape. Secure with speed clips (washers) and bend over excess pin lengths to remove safety hazards. Place washers on threaded rod and secure with nuts. Do not install banding over this area. See Figure 4 for details. Figure 4. 4 Access Door (Single-Layer System) Field fabricated access doors are protected with two layers of FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation. Cut away the one layer of FyreWrap 1.5 already installed and covering the duct to a dimension that matches the door opening to be used. Mark and cut a clean-out access opening in the duct. Weld 1 4 inch diameter threaded rod to each corner on the access door opening. Cover with hollow steel tubes (optional) for easy removal of blanket. Cut a 16 gauge cover plate with dimensions two inches larger than the opening. Drill holes in the door to match the rod pattern. Use a gasket of 0.5" thick unfaced FyreWrap or ceramic fiber blanket between the duct and the access door cover. Install the cover over the threaded rod overlapping the opening 1" on all sides. Weld at least four steel insulation pins to the outside of the door cover panel, approximately 1" from each corner. Cut a piece of FyreWrap 1.5 that matches the door opening size and install over pins to fit within the insulation area cut away. Cut an additional piece of FyreWrap 1.5 with perimeter dimensions that extend 1" beyond the layer below. Install over the insulation pins. Throughout the installation process, seal all cut edges with aluminum foil tape. Secure with washers and bend over excess pin lengths to eliminate safety hazards. Place washers on threaded rod and secure with nuts. Do not install banding over this area. See Figure 2 for details. Figure 2. 5 Duct Support Horizontal duct support systems do not require FyreWrap insulation when constructed using a minimum 0.5" diameter uninsulated all-thread steel rod and 2"x2"x0.25" uninsulated steel angle, spaced a maximum of 60" on center along the length of the duct. A minimum clearance of 2" is required between the protected duct and the steel rod. For all other duct support configurations, a single layer of FyreWrap 1.5 Duct Insulation is required on all components. Utilize a minimum 3" overlap (approx. 1 4 turn) on all joints. Firestop Systems Where ducts insulated with FyreWrap 1.5 pass through fire-rated walls and floors, the penetration opening shall be firestopped to maintain the fire rating of the assembly. ICC Evaluation Service Report NER and 2-Hour Grease Duct Two-Layer System: The annular space on each side of the wrapped duct shall be a maximum of 1" with the duct centered in the opening. Tightly pack nominal 4lb/ft 3 mineral wool (cut into strips approximately 0.5" thick, rolled tightly and inserted lengthwise) into the annular space so that the material is flush with the underside of the floor and recessed 0.25" from the top surface. Install GE Silicone Pensil 300 fully covering the mineral wool to a depth of 0.25". Recess the packing material minimum 1 4 inch from the top surface of the floor. Install Johns Manville Firetemp CI, SI or SE intumescent caulk fully covering the FyreWrap blanket to a depth of 1 4 inch. Overlap the caulk onto the surface of the concrete and onto the insulated duct approximately 1 2 inch. See Figure 6 for details.
