7 What is a Latex? o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o 1µm It s a colloidal dispersion of polymer particles in water The particles are so small they do not float or sink due to gravity and are stabilized by a surface layer so they do not coagulate Less than 1 micron in size 7

8 Latex Characteristics Latex is white (milky) Particles impart the opaque appearance to latex Easy-to-handle, low-viscosity liquid Latex is approximately 50% polymer/50% water One liter has: ~ 300 trillion particles Surface area ~5 acres Upon drying, latex forms strong, cohesive film 8

10 What Does a Latex Particle Look Like? Each latex particle contains a large number of long polymer chains Chains are highly entangled, thus providing mechanical strength when dried Molecular weight is a measure of the average chain length 10

16 What Does a Polymer Chain Look Like? Polymer chains are made up of many monomers linked together chemically, typically 100 to 10,000 monomers are linked in a polymer chain In this example, the monomer is ethylene: CH 2 =CH 2 The general formula for poly(ethylene) is [CH 2 -CH 2 ] n 16

17 Important Polymer Properties Molecular Weight Length of polymer chain (number of repeat units multiplied by molecular weight of the monomer) Largely controls the mechanical strength of the polymer Glass Transition Temperature Temperature at which polymer changes from glassy to rubbery state Must select appropriate glass transition temperature for application 17

Polymer Chains Monomer Units Largely determine application properties. Length of chain (molecular weight) and flexibility most important properties. Covalently bound together to form polymer chains. Emulsion polymerization is a form of free radical polymerization where water is used as the solvent. 25

61 Pressure Sensitive Adhesives PSA are used in the manufacture of tapes, labels and over-laminate films They can be supplied as either waterborne latexes, solventborne solutions or 100% solids hot melts, with waterborne being the largest type Waterborne PSA must be formulated or compounded to achieve the desired adhesion and application characteristics In NA labels are the largest consumers of PSA Labels can be categorized as either paper, filmic or metallic based on the face stock type Label adhesives types can be further subcategorized based on their adhesive properties (i.e. permanent, removal repositionable) and the conditions under which they will be used The primary adhesive properties are peel strength, tack and shear adhesion 61

64 Traffic Paint Over 30 million gallons of waterborne traffic paints, consuming approximately 150MM lbs of latex, are applied every year Striping season runs from March through the end of October The composition and performance of traffic paints are dictated by the federal government and state Departments of Transportation Dry time is a key performance attribute, traffic paint must be dry to touch in <10mins (ASTM D-711) Arkema and Dow are the only two suppliers of FAST DRY latexes for water-borne traffic paint in NA (patent protected) Non-FAST DRY products are used primarily for parking lots 64

67 Soil Stabilization/Dust control Atmospheric dust (<10um in diameter), or PM10 fugitive dust has been shown to be associated with severe health problems. EPA studies have identified exposure to PM10 and PM2.5 as the cause of several critical health problems, including higher incidences of critical asthma episodes, lowlung respiratory infections, and other respiratory distresses. Under the Clean Air Act, PM10 fugitive dust must be controlled using the best available control measures. Latexes are used for dust control, erosion control, and soil stabilization on unpaved roads, building pads, parking lots, fields, and other off-road motor vehicle parks 67
