2 STORAGE Store in a cool, dry place; preferably at less than 80 F to ensure a useful shelf life of one year. Avoid freezing. Note that UROTUF F97 has passed 5 freeze / thaw cycles. Frozen material may be reclaimed by allowing a 24- hour thaw and stirring well to ensure homogeneity prior to use. Read the UROTUF F97 Material Safety Data Sheet before handling, storing, or using this product. Premix Items 2 and 3 by adding the Manganese Hydrocure III drier to the water under mild agitation. This is the minimum amount of water required. 2. Immediately add this drier premix to the UROTUF F97 resin with mild agitation. 3. Add the remaining ingredients and continue to mix until uniform. 4. Filter (10 micron) and package. 3

5 FORMULATION NOTES DRIERS Manganese (9%) Hydrocure III is the preferred drier; at a level of 450 ppm on solids it provides a mar free film after overnight cure. Cobalt (5%) Hydrocure III is also an effective drier in UROTUF F97, however, varnish will have poorer in-can color stability and films will exhibit more yellowing. Drier sweat-in time of 7 days before use is highly recommended in order to optimize film performance, particularly mar resistance development. For best homogeneity, stability, and varnish appearance, premix the drier with water before adding to the resin. Add the drier to water under moderate agitation. This premix is not stable and must be used immediately. The use of so-called accelerators is NOT recommended as they do not assist in the crosslinking reaction and can contribute to both in-can and film color. Reduction in the level of driers can reduce in-can and film color; however, a lower drier level extends the time for the film to develop mar resistance. See UROTUF F97, Film Color Study addendum for details. Exclusion of air and minimum headspace in sealed containers will maintain low in-can color. SURFACTANTS BYK 345 (BYK Chemie) and Surfynol 104DPM (Air Products) show the best wetting and recoatability. Non-ionic surfactants are not recommended as they can cause foaming. RHEOLOGY MODIFIERS Rheology modifiers generally are not required for floor varnishes; lower viscosity is preferred, small adjustments in viscosity can be achieved by adjusting varnish solids. Aquaflow NHS-310 (Aqualon) and Tafigel PUR-60 (Ultra Additives) are effective thickeners. See F97 Rheology Study addendum for details. DEFOAMERS Foamaster VL (Cognis) and Drewplus L405 (Drew) are efficient defoamers for UROTUF F97 varnishes at levels as low as 0.05% on total formulation. Storage stability character is good (no float). CO-SOLVENTS Co-solvents are not required for optimum film formation and performance. If required for open time and workability, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, and Methyl Carbitol can be added. Alternate cosolvents are Dowanol DPM, PnB, Proposol P, Arcosolv TPM and isobutanol. A thorough check of oven stability is recommended with these solvents. FLATTING AGENTS Acematt TS100 (Degussa) is an effective flatting agent for UROTUF F97 varnishes. An Acematt TS100 level of 1.5% on resin solids will provide a semi-gloss finish having a 60 degree gloss of 50. An Acematt TS100 level of 2.8% on resin solids will provide a satin finish having a 60 degree gloss of 30. Addition of inert materials requires appropriate shear rates and times. To prevent hard settling, add equal parts of either Aerodisp W7520 or BYK-420 to Acematt TS100. See F97, TS100 Study addendum for details. ACRYLIC EMULSIONS Maximum durability is achieved with un-modified UROTUF F97 based varnish; however, some acrylic emulsions may be added to UROTUF F97 to affect certain performance characteristics or to reduce cost. Acrylic levels greater than 10%, on resin solids, significantly reduces mar resistance of the film. See F98, A845 Blend Study addendum for details. 5
