1 SECTION STAGE FIRE CURTAIN AND RIGGING PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: Fire curtain, rigging, and other necessary components to comply with life safety requirements and any other applicable codes governing the installation of systems of this type QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Comply with Florida Building Code (FBC). B. Verify dimensions and conditions at job site. C. Installer Qualifications: 1. Installer of stage rigging equipment shall be a single, approved, specialty contractor regularly engaged in theater rigging systems. 2. Installer shall have completed 5 similar projects within the last 2 years, and if required, shall provide evidence of such installations and their successful conclusion. 3. A qualified and experienced supervisor of the rigging installer shall be at the site during the entire installation period and shall actively direct and supervise the work. 4. Installer shall possess a current state of Florida contractor license that specifically allows the contractor to engage in the business of stage equipment and stage rigging SUBMITTALS 1. Samples. 2. 2 A. Contractor shall provide one year written guarantee against defects in materials and labor starting from the date of acceptance of equipment by the Board. Guarantee shall include normal maintenance on all materials but shall not include normal wear and tear, damage due to neglect, or improper use of equipment. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 FIRE CURTAIN A. A proscenium curtain shall be constructed and installed as specified. 1. The curtain shall be made of one thickness of wireinserted 100 percent glass yarn cloth weighing not less than 2-1/2 pounds per square yard. 2. The cloth shall be coated both sides with ceramic base sizing. 3. Curtain shall have at least a 2000 degrees F service temperature rating. 4. The curtain shall be made of continuous strips of cloth. 5. The widths of cloth shall overlap the sides of proscenium 18 inches each side and the top by 24 inches. 6. Provide 6 inch pockets sewn in the top and bottom of curtain. 7. The bottom of curtain shall have yield pad not less than 3 inches thick to form seal against the floor. 8. Above the proscenium opening shall be a smoke seal fabricated from the same material used for the curtain securely mounted to the wall. B. Headblock: 1. Of parallel type construction with 3/16" steel side plates extending above sheaves to accommodate at least 3 steel bolts in spacers to positively prevent cables from escaping the grooves. 2. Sheave shall not be less than 4 inches higher than loft blocks and equipped with Timken roller bearings, selfcontained, operating in ground cone independent of shaft and hub. 3. Shaft shall be standard shafting steel not less than 1 inch in diameter fitted with castellated nuts and keyed to hold adjustment. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

3 4. Headblock shall have not less than 1 inch diameter manila handline. C. Loft blocks: 1. Of full steel side construction with at least 3 cross bolts and spacers and polished sheaves to accommodate 3/8" steel cable, not less than 8" in diameter and Timken roller bearings as required for the headblocks. 2. Loft blocks to be similar to Clancy # Place blocks so outside pickup lines shall be at least 15 inches from end of curtain. D. Counterweight Track: 1. Lattice type construction of structural tees or angles properly tied together and securely anchored to proscenium wall providing a guide for counterweight carriage at both ends held together with steel U- brackets. 2. Lattice track shall be sufficient length to carry arbor, plus travel of curtain and safety run. E. Counterweight Carriage: 1. Top and bottom pieces shall be made of steel not less than 3 inches wide and having guides and connected by 3/4" solid steel rods with cut threads and lock nuts Provide with clamps to lock weights in place. 2. Counterweight carriage shall be similar to Clancy #15x7, or 84x7 as appropriate for guide track. F. Floorblock: 1. Sliding tension pulley type with 12 inch sheave, self lubricating, and providing adjustment of at least 8 inches. Floorblock shall be similar to Clancy #1218. G. Turnbuckles: 1. Provide for each lead line. 2. Curtain guides shall be with eye and shackle. 3. Stock shall be 3/8" in diameter. H. Handline: 1. Of first grade Manila not less than 1 inch diameter. 4 I. Sheet Metal: 1. Provide 6 inch U-bent sheet metal at each side of curtain to accept guides spaced on 18 inch centers. J. Guides: 1. Provide in each smoke pocket to accept guides attached to U-bent sheet metal side seams. K. Pipe battens: 1. Not less than 2 inches schedule 40 for top and bottom batten. L. Lead Lines: 1. 3/8" in diameter, 7xl9 cable and fastened to batten a batten clamp and three each 3/8" wire rope clamps. Mouse ends to prevent catching or fraying. M. Safety Chains: 1. Welded link chain. 2. There shall be 6 chains equally spaced between the support lines. 3. Chains shall be fastened to the gridiron and upper batten in such a manner to allow the curtain in the lowered position to strike the floor and have approximately 3 inches of slack. N. Smoke Pockets: 1. Of 1/4" thick structural steel, 18 inches deep and 6 inches wide. 2. Furnish and install guide system as required by code. 3. There shall be necessary filler steel on proscenium side of pocket if face of proscenium does not allow required flush installation of smoke pocket. O. Channels: 1. Provide two runs 6 inch x 8.2 channel at grid location. 2. Back mounted with approximately 4 inch space between to allow installing blocks with cable traveling between to top batten. 3. These channels shall run sufficient distance across stage to accomplish installation of blocks as Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

5 specified. 4. Provide and install all other required miscellaneous support steel to complete the system. P. Fire Release Lines, Over-balanced Weight, and Hardware: 1. Of at least No.12 handline fitted with not less than 6 fusible links, 2 on each side of the stage and 2 overhead on the gridiron operation of fire release line to allow for addition of required overweight of curtain for automatic closing in case of emergency. 2. Provide signs at each side of proscenium bearing inscription, "IN CASE OF FIRE RELEASE RING TO LOWER CURTAIN". Q. Automatic Checking Device: 1. Provide so curtain shall close in not more than 20 seconds and last 5 feet of travel shall require not less than 5 seconds. 2. Checking devices shall have adjustable checking capability. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 INSTALLATION A. All stage equipment shall be installed according to the highest standards of the industry. B. Equipment shall be securely anchored, and installed plumb, straight, and true. C. Components shall function properly, safety, quietly, and without binding or rubbing DEMONSTRATION AND INSTRUCTION A. Upon completing installation and adjustment for suitable operation of all work specified in this section, notify the A\E and the Board to schedule an inspection. 1. At the time of this inspection, furnish sufficient tools and workmen to operate all equipment and to perform adjustments and tests as may be required by the A/E or the Board. 2. 6 such equipment shall be replaced with suitable equipment, and an additional inspection will be scheduled. 3. Final acceptance will be withheld until all system have been thoroughly and completely tested, and found to be in correct operating conditions, and complying with the specifications and drawings. B.
