Interior Design Jennifer Quail Degree in ID (1995) from SD State University Practiced in commercial design 8 years Project Manager at SD State University 10 years Various construction & remodeling projects Managed the University Space Model Managed General Classrooms (+/ 70) and all associated upgrades Utilization study regarding classroom and class labs Managed campus signage program Currently Director of Entrepreneur Support local Economic Development Corporation Jennifer Quail Designer yet very pragmatic Enjoy the factual part of design and interiors Believe programming is critical Wholistic perspective is critical Be at the table, and be there from the beginning Be an active listener and ask the right questions Always understand the why The only thing that should be in a silo is silage not colleges, departments and certainly not anyone on the design team! 1

Outline for the session Review interior finishes What to consider Some product examples Commentary Few examples Attendee input Thoughts & Suggestions Discuss, develop and update design guidelines to have a comprehensive understanding of the institution s expectations of the interiors and the life cycle of finishes. Make sure everyone is on the same page. The goal should always be to maximize the space including the finishes we all deal with utilization rates. Verify architectural specifications note, if manufacturer warranty is more stringent it supersedes the architect specification. Products and manufacturers are suggestions, there are many options, few are mentioned. Each institution and situation needs to be evaluated on an individual basis to determine the best solution. Walls Paint Drywall finishing levels: materials/finished_assets/cgc construction handbook ch05 finishing drywall systems can en.pdf Level 0 unfinished Level 1 non public locations: plenum, attics, service corridors. fire taping Level 2 substrate to water resistant gypsum backing board, garages, warehouse storage Level 3 areas to receive heavy texture or commercial wallpaper Level 4 flat paint, light texture or residential wallpaper installed Level 5 highest quality, gloss, semi gloss or enamel are specified Scrub Resistance ASTM D 2486 more than 3,000 scrub cycles Stain resistance ASTM D 1308 excellent rating 2

Walls Paint Deep colors Additional glycol containing Can affect paint performance Reduction in abrasion and mar resistance Drop in sheen Delay in dry time Color pigments are softer than white pigments In store colorant systems can change the characteristics of the paint Caution when matching another manufacturer s color Walls Paint The nature of the pigment can also affect performance Example, when exposed to more UV light one formula may exhibit excessive fading when another may maintain the desired colorfastness Consider using factory made colors Colorants are added as dry powder milled directly into the paint Ask for color tint bases in basic colors to minimize the amount of additional colorant needed Follow manufacturer recommendations for dry time, applying a new coat before the previous coat has completely cured can compromise hiding power Walls Paint Scuffmaster colors/#?product=scrubtough Nine different lines variety of applications touch on two lines Initial cost only about 10% more than SW/BM/PPG, ROI at first touch up which could be as early as punchist Scrubtough Designed for high traffic interiors 10x stronger than typical paint Scrub Resistance 8,000 scrub cycles Polyurethane Formulation for exceptional durability and cleanability Stain Resistance Excellent Application brush, roll, spray Eggshell finish Water based / Low VOC 5 year Warranty Class A fire rated Microban protection 3

When the lights are on looks like adjacent paint If power fails/lights off, emits a soft glow to help guide people safely toward the exits. Brightness rating very high Duration minutes Glow color green / yellow Daytime color same as specified finish Charge time 12+ minutes with fluorescent light Walls Writable Surfaces Writable/Dry Erase flexible, presentation surfaces, vinyl and polyester, laminated to woven or nonwoven backings, and commonly used with dry erase markers as a writable/erasable wallcovering and/or projection surface Installation is similar to commercial wallcoverings Dry erase substrates may be used to cover old blackboards, chalkboards or whiteboards Watch for ghosting issues Check the scrub resistance 5

Walls Writable Surfaces Wink by Wolf Gordan pdf One coat application clear! Water based / Low VOC Works best over eggshell finish clean, level 5 smooth surface Expands as drys for a uniform finish *Scrub Resistance 10,000 scrub cycles *Stain Resistance Excellent Fire Rating Class A Use over ANYTHING drywall, marker board, chalk board, metal, glass, smooth vinyl wall coverings Use standard markers Use microfiber or dry erase cotton cloth 10 year limited warranty *critical to note the scrub cycle in the specification to prevent substitutes. Great application and care & maintenance videos Walls Writable Surfaces walltalker by Koroseal: Projectable surface, magnetic, writable Install like wallpaper 4 wide rolls Glass Potentially more limited application not every space can have glass vs drywall Can use tinted or colored glass Consider use in lounge or conference spaces If installed in public area, verify maintenance schedule Walls Wallpaper Categories: Type I, Type II and Type III Only use Type III commercial grade Check/verify Class A Fire rating Highest resistance to abrasion, staining, tearing, crocking, colorfastness, and breaking strength criteria Use in areas exposed to very heavy traffic by movable equipment or rough abrasion Provides color and pattern that paint cannot Wallpaper 101: resource/index.html resource/wallcovering glossary.html 6

Walls Wallpaper Acoustical Designed for use on vertical surfaces, panels, operable walls, meeting rooms, offices, auditoriums, restaurants, corridors, etc. Predominantly made of man made polyester and olefin fibers, Tested for sound absorption, yielding a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating NRC ratings range from 0 to 1. An NRC of 0 means that the product absorbs no sound. An NRC of 1 means that the product absorbs all sound. The higher the NRC, the better the product is at soaking up sound. Walls Wallpaper Cork Sustainability material, cork is stripped from the bark of a cork oak tree, which regenerates every 9 10 years. formed and laminated to a nonwoven substrate or paper that may be colored or plain variegated texture with no definite pattern or design naturally mildew and rot resistant, and highly permeable offering some degree of sound resistance and insulation Walls Rigid Protection Consider various types, uses and the install height Corner guards Full height in public areas helps with transitions of colors/materials Half height or 5 AFF for back of house areas 7

Dynamic coefficient of friction is just the measurement how easily one surface slides and keeps sliding against another under different circumstances, such as if there is a liquid on the surface. Suggest designing to this standard in all applications, not just wet. Always consider carefully the application as wells as an exterior environmental factors for your region. 11

Floors Porcelain Look for tiles with rectified edges. A tile that has been rectified has had all its edges mechanically finished in order to achieve a more precise facial dimension. Larger tile size (i.e., greater than 15" or 16" in any direction) and minimal grout lines, makes for an almost seamless look (3mm or less) Very fine bevel around their top edge, reduces the chance of edges chipping Slight difference where tiles aren't exactly even with one another is called 'lippage' Tile Council of North America (TCNA ) recommends no more than 1/3 offset on tiles 16 or larger to minimize lippage and tripping hazard Floors Porcelain TEC Powder grout an equal to epoxy grout without the cost of epoxy. Grout Data Sheet pdf Highly stain resistant Color accurate Resistant to efflorescence Crack and shrink resistance Mold and mildew resistant ** Never use No Rinse cleaners they eat away at the grout and there is no way to reverse this chemical process once it s begun. May take years, but definitely will shorten the life of the installation and can be avoided. 12

Floors Porcelain Schulter Edges us/en_us/profiles/for Walls/c/P FW Superior edge protection to tiled walls Add the perfect finishing touch to tiled walls as they conceal and protect exposed tile edges and eliminate the need for unsightly caulking Assortment of available accessories, including end caps and corners, eliminate the need for mitering, expedite installation time, and provide a nice, clean finish. Large variety of options, inside or outside corners, different degree corners, track for accent tiles. Not only highly functional they are also providing decorative elements in cove base and accent decorative boarders. Much, much cleaner look, reduce installation costs as the corners are the area that take more time and end up looking the least attractive. Uniformity in the tiles and limited lipping which leads to minimal chipping and increased life of the install Floors Carpet Verify slab moisture content is within specification range prior to install. Manufacturers are coming out more variety in sizes and shapes planks (9x36 and 12x48), hexagons, rectangles, diamonds and others Pattern and color of tile take into consideration local soil colors and other environmental factors. Recycled yarn may get LEED points, however hard to know the fiber content and therefore the true life of the product. Plan to use in areas that have a 5 year or less life cycle. Make sure the installers roll the carpet tiles at the end of the installation. 13

Floors Carpet Texture Appearance Retention Rating (TARR) The TARR classification typically puts carpet tiles into one of three usage categories: Moderate (at the bottom of the scale), Heavy Severe Extreme (at the top) The higher the rating the more durable From Milliken carpet 14
