2 General Information This technical manual contains details of Peer Industries cold roll formed and pressed steel products. Peer Industries provide this manual for use by Architects, Engineers, Designers, Contractors and Sub-Contractors to assist in product selection and use. It has been prepared using relevant Australian Standards together with sound engineering principles substantiated through laboratory tests. Peer Industries cold roll formed and pressed steel products are economical, efficient and durable structural members suitable for a wide range of building applications. Peer Industries steel products are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of relevant Australian and New Zealand Standards. Warranty and Design Considerations Peer Industries warrants for a period of up to 15 years from the date of purchase that the Peer façade system will be free from defects due to factory workmanship or materials providing that: 1. The project has been designed in accordance with all relevant provisions contained in the current BCA, regulations and Australian Standards in force at the time of the project. 2. The façade system components are installed and maintained strictly in accordance with the relevant technical literature current at the time of installation 3. All other products used in conjunction with Peer Industries façade systems products including but not limited to; screws,anchors sealants and jointing systems must be applied or installed and maintained strictly in accordance with relevant manufacturers literature and good trade practice 4. The claimant s sole remedy for breach of warranty is (at Peer Industries discretion) that Peer industries will supply replacement product, rectify the effected product or pay for the cost of replacement or rectification of the effected product. This Peer Technical manual is designed to provide a general guide to the design and application of the Peer façade system. These systems comprise of top hats, backing strip and an EPDM closed cell foam gasket. CSIRO Test Report DTF 817 Peer Industries cold-formed steel Top hats are tested in conjunction with compressed fibre cement sheeting sources from a variety of sources Material Peer Industries cold roll formed steel sections and pressed products are manufactured from Zinc coated steel strip conforming to AS 1397 for thickness up to and including 1.55 BMT (base metal thickness). The steel strip for the various section sizes has a minimum yield stress of 300 Mpa. Coating All Peer Industries cold roll formed steel sections are coated with zinc with a minimum coating mass of grams/m 2 as indicated. 6 Peer Façade System The Peer façade system has been designed to be used with compressed fibre cement sheeting (CFC) ranging in thickness from 9 to 16. The system consists of 4 major components. 7 Peer Façade System The Peer façade system was designed after exhaustive consultation with end users. Designed to be simple and easy to use the system is user friendly. The use of the Peer façade system will result in a significant reduction in build times when compared to other systems. Peer Façade System Backing Strip The purpose designed and roll formed backing strip is multifunctional. It acts as a support structure to support board during line up and fixing. When used in conjunction with appropriate sealers it provides a water tight seal for each horizontal joint. The unique profile acts as a spacer providing uniform 10 horizontal gaps. The backing strip can be used as a template for vertical joints ensuring a uniform 10 joint. 8 Peer Façade System Peer Façade System 120 Top Hat The 120 Top hat has been designed to work in conjunction with an EPDM expanded foam seal. The 120 Top hat is used where a water tight vertical joint between 2 sheets is required. Mountain knurling is provided on each side of the seal channel to assist with fastener location. Fig 02 - Example of Peer 120 Top Hat and EPDM expanded foam seal The Top hat is available in 6.0 and 7.2 meter lengths. Peer Façade System 50 Top Hat The 50 top hat is used as a support structure in all areas other than where a water tight seal between sheets is required. The Top hat is available in 6.0 and 7.2 meter lengths. Peer Façade System low density closed cell EPDM expanded foam seal Tesa low density closed cell EPDM foam seal works in conjunction with the 120 top hat and must be applied onto the roll formed channel specifically designed for this seal. This seal is watertight at 10% compression however when used in conjunction with Peer façade top hat 120 the system is designed to provide 50% seal compression to enhance the water tight seal. The performance expectancy of Tesa tape as specified by Tesa is 25 years. Seal performance is dependant on the conditions prevailing during its installation. Seal choice and use rests with the user and Tesa should be consulted should further information on seal performance be required. 10 Peer Façade System - Installation Determine panel layout then mark out the centre point of each top hat on the purlins. Fig 04 - Marking out Purlins at appropriate spacings Position the top hats according to predetermined and marked spacings and ensure that they are vertical (check with a spirit level). Peer Façade System Installation cont d Fix the Top hats to the purlins using appropriate fasteners ensuring that both legs of the Top hat are fixed to the purlin.

Also ensure that the top hats are mounted vertical using a spirit level to check Fig 06 - Top Hat With fasteners on both legs and vertically level using spirit level (The Top hats must be fixed on both legs to minimise flexing of the top hat). Apply the foam seal gasket to the 120 Top Hat The seal can be applied to the mounted top hat in situ or it can be applied to the Top hat horizontally before it is fixed to the purlins. Ensure that the seal is applied to the centre of the purpose designed seal channel on the 120 Top hat. Backing strip joints must overlap the nearest Top Hat and be sealed with 2 beads of Sikoflex 11FC, Bostik Seal n Flex or equivalent sealer to ensure a water tight joint. Installation of the next layer of board Apply a bead of Sikoflex 11FC, Bostik Seal n Flex or equivalent sealer as per the board manufacturer s specifications to the top of the backing strip and then rest a board with predrilled and counter sunk screw holes on the purpose designed 3 edge of the backing strip. 16 Peer Façade System Installation cont d Position the board to ensure that all joints are 10 then fasten the board to the Top hats using appropriate fasteners. Remove any rough edges form the predrilled holes using a scraper Fill the screw holes with appropriate 2 pack filler as recoended by the board manufacturer. The gaps between sheets can be filled with a flexible acrylic sealer which can be applied directly on to the expanded foam EPDM gasket. 18 Control Joints cont d Vertical and horizontal control joints are required to match existing structural control joints or as per board manufacturers recoendations. The Peer Industries façade system utilises a flat galvanised 0.75 BMT steel strip. This strip bridges the top hats on each side of the control joint and is riveted to one side only Sealant is applied between the strip and the CFC board creating a floating watertight seal that allows for joint expansion and contraction. 19 Storage and Handling of product on Site Products manufactured by Peer Industries are produced from coated steel coil material which is classified as non hazardous material. Products are supplied in varied pack and sub pack quantities and should be handled in accordance with the recoendations contained in AS 1470 Storage of metal products should be in accordance with Peer Industries recoendations as listed below. Top Hats, backing strips and expanded foam EPDM seal should be stored in dry areas free from dirt, oil and airborne contaminants such as acids and salt sprays. Where possible all material used in the construction of facade walls should be delivered to site prior to installation and handled in a manner that reduces the risk of damage. All material should be kept dry in an area where accidental damage cannot occur. All framing should be sheeted as soon as possible after installation to protect the coating Steel products should be used as soon as possible after delivery. Peer Façade System design capacities The design capacities of Peer Façade System are in Limit state format and are based on AS Wind Loads. The top hat capacities in table have been calculated in accordance with AS4600- cold formed steel structures. The deflection of the Top hats is based on serviceability factor of 0.6 x ultimate wind loads and is limited to Span /240. The peer façade system can be used for cyclonic wind areas region C & D based on wind pressures. It is the responsibility of the Project Engineer to specify the connection of top hats to the support structure.
