Learning Objectives At the end of this course, participants will be able to: Explain why carpet is tested. Identify the organizations that develop standards for carpet testing. Summarize what different test methods measure and why each measured characteristic is important. List what tests t are required by law.
Why Test Carpet? Legal and governmental requirements Safety Product quality assurance for customers Warranties Meeting industry standards Verification of specification items
Carpet Testing Resources American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) Federal Test Methods (FTM) Building codes and fire codes National Fire Protection ti Association (NFPA) International Code Council (ICC) Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Who Creates Test Requirements? Federal GSA, FHA, DOD, and DOE State (State Purchasing Departments) Local (Building and Fire Codes) In-house (Product Specifications) End User or Specifier (based on performance requirements) Non-governmental standards organizations
Government Specifications and Regulations GSA GSA Technical Requirements for Carpet, Carpet Tile and Carpet Cushion HUD UM-44d (residential healthcare facilities) Federal Housing Administration Various agencies (military, governmental) Check Cec.gov websites es to find these documents.
Overview of Test Methods 4 Construction Analysis Tests Average Pile Yarn Weight Pile Thickness/Tuft Height Tufts per Square Inch Average Pile Yarn Density Tuft Bind Delamination of secondary backing Electrostatic Propensity Flammability Methenamine Pill Radiant Panel Smoke Density Antimicrobial Stain and dsoil ilresistance Indoor Air Quality CRI Green Label Plus Colorfastness Tests Surface Appearance Retention Hexapod Test Vettermann Drum Moisture Resistance Moisture Penetration Under Dynamic Crush Test British Spill Test Modular Carpet Tile Size and Thickness Aachen Test/Dimensional Stability
Construction Analysis Average Pile Yarn Weight (ounces/sq. yd.) ASTM D5848 Determines the pile mass or weight, including pile yarn above primary backing and buried below the backing. Tufts per Square ASTM D5793 Determine the gauge and multiply by the Inch stitches per inch (SPI). Pile Thickness Tuft Height ASTM D6859 Determines pile thickness for level loop carpet or tuft height for cut pile carpet. Needed to determine average pile density. Average Pile Formula: Calculation based on amount of pile fiber Yarn Density (36 x pile weight) by weight in a given volume (oz./cubic pile height or pile thickness yard). Affects wearability, resilience and appearance retention.
Tuft Bind Measures amount of force required to pull a single carpet tuft from its primary backing. Determines the ability of the tufted carpet to withstand zippering from snags. 15 tufts pulled from each carpet sample. 10 pounds of force for loop pile only is the usual minimum average value. ASTM D1335
Delamination Measures the amount of force required dto strip secondary backing from the primary carpet structure. Measures pounds of force per inch width. Requirement: minimum average value for basic broadloom is 2.5 lbs. of force per inch. ASTM D3936 Delamination Strength of Secondary Backing
AATCC Electrostatic Propensity Test Assesses the static-generating propensity of carpet AATCC 134 Step Test Procedure and Scuff Test Procedure Static generation is dependent on humidity conditions, so testing is performed at 70 o F and 20% relative humidity. Requirement: less than 3.5 kv for general commercial areas. AATCC-134
Flammability Methenamine Pill Small scale ignition test Test: how far the fire spreads when a timed burning tablet is placed on the carpet. 8 specimens of the carpet are tested. At least 7 must pass. Carpet passes test if the flame does not spread more than 3 inches. Requirement: All carpet and rugs 4ft.x6ft.orlargersoldinUS must pass this test. FF CFR 1630 ASTM D2859
Flammability Flooring Radiant Panel Referenced by most building and fire codes Applicable to carpet in corridors and exits, not rooms Test: Measures tendency of carpet to spread flame caused by radiant heat Critical Radiant Flux = minimum radiant energy a fire needs to sustain a flame propagation of the carpet (watts per sq. centimeter) ASTM E648 NFPA 253
Flammability Classifications Flooring Radiant Panel Specifiers should refer to local building and fire codes. Class I (> 0.45 watts per sq. cm) Typically required for exits or access to exits of: Healthcare facilities New construction detention and correctional facilities Class II ( watts per sq. cm) Typically required for exits and access to exits of: Day care centers Existing detention and correctional facilities Hotels Dorms Apartment buildings ASTM E648 NFPA 253
Smoke Density Test Test: measures the smoke generated by burning or smoldering carpet Protocol: Measured by photo detector using light transmittance measurements Sometimes referred to as NBS Smoke Chamber Test ASTM E662
AATCC Antimicrobial Tests AATCC 174 Antibacterial Activity Test Part I Anti-microbial inhibition with a single streak or Part II Zone of inhibition for 2mm around product and Part III Antifungal Activity Assessment of Carpet Material AATCC Effi f ti i bi l t t t ft AATCC 171 or 138 Efficacy of anti-microbial treatment after repeated washings
AATCC 175 Stain Resistance Stain - a discoloration due to a color adding material, such as food or liquid, that exhibits resistance to removal by standard cleaning methods. Stainblocker - a chemical substance which, when applied to a textile substrate, imparts partial or total t resistance to staining. i
Soil Resistance AATCC 189 determines the amount of soil resist on carpet fibers; measured in parts per million ASTM D 6540 Accelerated Soiling of Pile Yarn Floor Covering
CRI Green Label Plus Certification Assesses emission rates of new carpet by product type Green Label Plus sets the highest standard for IAQ in the carpet industry. Green Label Plus meets and exceeds other industry standards. The fifth time in fifteen years that the carpet industry has updated the Green Label Plus program. ASTM D 5116
Colorfastness Light AATCC 16-E Accelerated fading test using xenon light source. After Part 3 specified exposure, specimen is graded for color loss using a 5 (no color change) to 1 (severe color change) scale. Water Bleed AATCC 107 Transference of color from wet carpet to another surface. Crocking AATCC 165 Transfer of colorant from the surface of a carpet to another surface by rubbing. Conducted on wet and dry carpet. Transference of color graded for color loss using 5 (no color transference) to 1 (severe color transference) scale. Atmospheric Contaminants AATCC 23 AATCC 129 AATCC 164 AATCC 23 Colorfastness to Burnt Gas Fumes AATCC 129 Colorfastness to Ozone in the Atmosphere under High Humidity AATCC 164 Colorfastness to Oxides of Nitrogen in the Atmosphere under High Humidity
AATCC Gray Scale Created by American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists Used to assess color change and color loss Scale = severe transference or appearance change 5 = no color loss or appearance change Requirement: Usually 4 or 5 Gray Scale
Hexapod and Vettermann Drum Measures durability or appearance change from simulated foot traffic Excludes the influence of soiling and maintenance 8,000 to 12,000 cycles in a Hexapod test for commercial carpet 5,000 to 22,000 cycles in Vettermann drum testing Hexapod ASTM D5252 Vettermann Drum ASTM D5417
British Spill Moisture Test 100ml of blue dyed water poured on carpet Transfer of dye using same 1-4 scale Not a standardized test but is being evaluated for adoption by the AATCC
Dimensional Stability for Carpet Tile p Modular Size and Thickness Physical measurement Typical tolerances in range of five thousandths of an inch within 1/32 inch of dimensional specifications. Aachen Test Measures dimensional stability a result of changes in moisture conditions Requirement: maximum +/- 0.2% ISO 2551
Moisture Penetration under Dynamic Crush Test 10,000 impacts Not a standardized test 10 lbs. per square inch strikes carpet at 1 strike per second Rating system 1. No transfer of dye through sample 2. Minimum discoloration, hardly visible 3. Very visible but light in color 4. Very visible and deep in color
Additional Tests Other ASTM and ISO tests are available. Contact the manufacturer for information on tests.
