5 VARIANT product range The VARIANT 370 and 350 balers are designed for cost-effective operation in dry conditions. They combine outstanding value for money with professional technology ensuring maximum work rates. With variable bale sizes and five robust, totally reliable endless belts, these are simple and highly reliable machines for dry material such as haylage, hay and straw. 12 Top performance from the start. Technological perfection. The VARIANT range of variable chamber balers demonstrate a perfect interplay of crop intake and compaction mechanisms for extremely high work rates. A huge appetite. The wide-reaching 2.10-m pick-up (1.90-m clearing width to DIN standards) is identical in design to that of the QUADRANT large square baler family. The purpose of the additional width is to facilitate the clean and effective harvesting of extremely wide swaths and to greatly ease the process of transforming smaller swaths into well-shaped and rounded bales. A highspeed helical feed rotor positioned behind the pick-up ensures that the crop feed to the bale chamber remains consistent, even where the swath is lumpy, dry, short and fluffy. The full picture. While working, you have an excellent overview of the pick-up, and can boost the work rate as required. Depending on the crop and crop flow, you can push the machine to its limits to achieve maximum performance. The VARIANT is exceptionally fast in dry material such as hay and straw. The working height can be modified at will via the integrated chain to facilitate effective negotiation of uneven ground. The lifting ram remains unpressurised, which enables the pick-up to swing unhindered and adjust effectively to ground conditions. 14 Unique to CLAAS the rotor sets the bale in motion. Smooth crop flow. Reliable operation from the outset. The standard feed rotor delivers a uniform crop flow to the bale chamber. As a result, significantly more crop is processed per unit time, allowing the VARIANT to operate at extremely high work rates. In the VARIANT, the rotor drives the bale, forcing the start of the process. So there is no possibility of the bale getting stuck in the chamber. 15 Rotor Drive 1 1 The rotor feeds the crop into the baling chamber where the bale is forced to start rotating immediately. 2 Maximum core compaction to produce extremely high bale weights and a storable, uniform bale shape from the start. 3 With a belt speed of 2.7 m/s, the VARIANT can process more than any other model, and requires significantly less time to bind the bale. 2 Thanks to the pressure release mechanism, with the optional OPERATOR terminal blockages are easily cleared from the comfort of the cab. At the push of a button, you can release the pressure on the entire system and the rotor is freed up. When the system is switched back on, the full power of the PTO shaft acts on the congested material, forcing the blockage out of the way. Smooth all around. The robust direct drive from rotor to pick-up via a large gear wheel, a 1"-thick rotor chain and a shaft reduces power losses to a minimum, and maximises service life. 3 A clutch mechanism disengages the rotor drive when the tailgate is opened, to ensure tidy bale deposit. A slip clutch in the drive shaft provides further protection for the drive system, for maximum operating reliability. The rotor is automatically deactivated every time the tailgate is opened. 16 Runs like clockwork. Dimensions to meet the demand. The transmission system, drive chain and drive shaft for the belts and protection systems are designed for the toughest conditions and heaviest workloads. The strong chain tensioner spring spreads the load evenly, ensuring a long service life for the drive chain. Every part of the machine is designed for high reliability and long service life, regardless of how much you expect of your new VARIANT in everyday operation. Efficient lubrication. The standard automatic chain lubrication system keeps the chains regularly oiled. The double-sided brush supplies the chain with twice as much oil, brushing both sides each time the tailgate is opened. The new lubrication system has a 6.3-litre tank, and the ability to individually adjust the lubricant volume ensures smooth operation over long working days. 16

17 Drive Lubrication In operation "Simple and good simply good." The machinery syndicate "CUMA de l entente" in Boulogne, in the French department of Vendée (85), boasts a membership of 24, among them 15 contractors using VARIANT balers. In 2010, the members of this machinery syndicate elected to purchase three new VARIANT 370 machines. Having had several VARIANT 280 machines in its pool and buying its first VARIANT 370, the syndicate's decision to replace these with three new VARIANT 370 machines came very easily. "We again decided to go for three identical balers, since we have found the VARIANT 370 balers extremely easy to operate and that's exactly what we need to ensure that all our members can work with the balers independently, and without any problems." Syndicate members see the tying process as a key advantage of this model, and also like its work-rate capacity of 8,000 bales a year: "It sure can get through a lot!" Farmers also appreciate the low maintenance costs, which are among the lowest on the market. Thanks to the automatic chain lubrication and one-piece belts, no costs are incurred on the machines, and no expenses need to be factored in. In summary: "This is just the machine we need. When it comes to choosing a baler, the user-friendliness, bale counter, ease of maintenance and simple tying process are the reasons why our members unanimously call for the VARIANT." In practice, any member of the syndicate can borrow one of the available balers at any time: "So it's really important that the balers are easy to hitch up and that the twine is easy to insert", one member explains. 17

VARIANT balers come equipped with a hydraulic bale density control system that produces highly compressed bales, no matter what the conditions. For instance, the required density in kg/m 3 can be achieved even with dry crops and high throughput. The CLAAS design uses a combination of three hydraulic rams, a spring pack and a dual tensioning arm. This ensures that the one-piece belts are guided accurately and tensioned correctly. Hard or soft centre? A full range of bale sizes. The soft core device can be set individually, because different crops require different core densities. Dry straw is baled with a rock-hard core. With damper hay or straw, the high baling pressure of the VARIANT is reduced intentionally so that the bales can be broken up more easily when used. The VARIANT range is designed to enable crops to be baled across a wide range of diameters: 0.90 to 1.55 metres on the VARIANT 350, and 0.90 to 1.80 metres on the VARIANT 370. In dry conditions, the bale diameter can be increased progressively so fields can be cleared more quickly by making the bales larger, and less net wrap or twine will be needed. Quick set up. The bale diameter and size of the soft core are set conveniently on this scale. Increased bale pressure. The dual tensioning arms on VARIANT balers ensure highest possible baling densities. The roller in the tailgate is identical to the one on the ROLLANT, and perfectly exemplifies the reliability of the VARIANT. All-round dependability. Even the standard model comes with an impressive specification aimed at the professional user. The rotating belts are powered by a convex rubber-coated roller. The belts are gently profiled for maximum traction with no slippage. The crop is transported reliably, and dry, brittle material is handled gently to avoid losses. Five rugged, wide profile belts. This design provides optimum coverage of the bale surface, reducing losses of broken crop material. The broad contact surface also enhances smooth running characteristics. The belts are guided via non-slip profiled shafts with extremely low wear and tear. Clean belts. Reliable operation is maintained by strippers fitted to the guide rollers and a large folding tailgate stripper. 21

22 Impressive versatility and speed. Unbeatable wrapping and tying speed. Automatic wrapping and tying. Round balers have to come to a stop when wrapping the bale. The time stopped should therefore be as short as possible. The high belt speed of 2.7 m/sec means rapid wrapping of the bales, and allows you to get back to baling again straight away. When the required bale size has been reached, the wrapping or tying process is activated automatically. The special overhead feed of net or twine allows wrapping to begin regardless of the crop flow, a feature much appreciated for wrapping a remaining bale at the end of a field. The new net wrapping linkage adjusts the brake force to the decreasing net roll diameter. This ensures a consistent net tension and optimal coverage of the bale from edge to edge. 23 Wrapping and tying Dependable twine tying. The full picture. The dual twine tying procedure also starts fully automatically. Simple set-up and adjustment are key features on the VARIANT tying system, and pay off every day in the field. The tying mechanism starts in the centre of the bale and guides the twine from right to left across the bale and back to the centre. The bales are tied securely and keep their shape, although the special tying technique means bales can be broken up again just as easily. The driver needs to be able to keep an eye on what's happening on the baler. CLAAS balers all feature good visibility from the front into the wrapping or tying area. Up to three rolls of net can be carried in the baler, enough for a long working day. Developed by CLAAS and customised for CLAAS balers. During the hectic forage harvesting period, every minute can be vital so it's great if you have reliable technology to assist you. Using the rapid-select keys on the CLAAS STANDARD TERMINAL (CST), you can control the basic machine functions from the comfort of the driver's seat. And with the terminal controlled via the ISOBUS module, you can operate the entire baler in this way. Just choose your preferred method net or twine and set the automatic start according to your requirements. You can also activate the tying process manually, for example in short swaths. A mechanical bale counter on the baler informs you of the output achieved at all times. Four LEDs alert you to any problems with the wrapping or binding process. 25 Operation For even more functionality: OPERATOR. Getting the balance right. Frequent changes of driver and variations in field conditions are routine during harvesting periods. With the optionally available OPERATOR terminal, you can programme the baler in advance according to the prevailing harvesting conditions. The optionally available left/right display on the OPERATOR supports the even filling of the baling chamber for well-balanced bales, especially in irregular or narrow swaths. On the one hand, you can set the main control functions, as on the STANDARD TERMINAL. On the other, you have control over every detail of what's going on behind the tractor during tying and wrapping. The baling pressure and the pressure on the soft core can be tailored to the crop type and, thanks to the OPERATOR terminal, can be easily seen by the driver. Thanks to the pressure-release mechanism, you can clear any blockages easily from the cab. What's more, the terminal shows you precisely how many bales and working hours you have completed. 25
