By applying the DFMA principles, FP McCann s design engineers are able to evaluate individual precast concrete products part by part, in addition to documenting the assembly process step by step. This allows them to generate the cost, part count and assembly time to provide a benchmark to measure its success and identify the parts and process improvement opportunities. In turn, this has allowed FP McCann to design and manufacture more cost-effective and efficient high-quality precast concrete products with less wastage and greater on-site recycling. As a result, increased productivity, combined with a reduction in production time and costs, allows FP McCann to be more competitive within the marketplace. 4 CONCRETE SAFETY BARRIERS 4 fpmccann.co.uk/security-barriers Our precast concrete, modular jersey barriers are ideal to use where public safety and security is a priority. They are excellent for separating lanes of traffic and for protecting construction workers and pedestrians from oncoming vehicles. They are also designed to minimise vehicle damage in the event of a collision, by allowing vehicle tyres to ride up on the lower sloped face. Head-on collisions are also minimised by gradually lifting the vehicle and pivoting it away from oncoming vehicles and back into traffic heading in its original direction.

6 EASI-BLOC Easi-Bloc is a precast concrete block offering solutions where limited space is available for containment. They are are simplistic in design allowing for effortless handling and speed of installation. Easi-Bloc comes in four sizes making them ideal for a variety of applications. Easi-Bloc contains a central cast-in lifting loop for ease of handling and installation. Products are manufactured to comply with the requirements of BS EN :2004. 8 PYRA-BLOC Pyra-Bloc is a precast concrete modular unit consisting of four 1-metre square pyramids with interlocking connectors which is designed to act as a security barrier. Its unique design will prevent vehicle movement, as vehicles will become impaled whilst trying to drive over them. 10 Security Barriers installation guide Whilst the methods and procedures for the installation of precast concrete security barriers may be familiar to contractors, careful attention to detail will lead to safer working, a smoother flow of operations and a higher standard of finished barrier installation. This guide provides an overview for anyone engaged in the installation of security barriers and is published to encourage good practice in the installation of precast security barriers. Taking Delivery 1. The contractor is responsible for offloading units and should:agree the delivery date and laying sequence, ideally 5 working days in advance of the proposed installation date Provide a suitable access and vehicle hard standing which can be used safely by standard delivery vehicles Provide a suitable crane and plant of adequate capacity to safely off load and install the units Upon arrival on-site, the contractor must take responsibility for the safety of the driver whilst the products are offloaded The load recipient should be aware that to be on the back of a lorry during the offloading process constitutes working at height and as such, the requirements of the current Working at Height Regulations (2005) must be satisfied. It is the contractor s responsibility to carry out a risk assessment of the operation and to provide all suitable measures to access the vehicle trailer safely with fall protection provisions provided, as deemed necessary 2. Lifting methods may occasionally differ, but generally all FP McCann units are lifted using a threaded cast-in socket & lifting loop system, details of which can be forwarded upon request. The contractor should: Confirm details of the lifting method being used Undertake all risk assessments, in addition to providing all handling equipment necessary to safely operate the lifting method on site 3. Where other methods, such as lifting forks are to be used, the contractor should: Consult with our technical department to ensure that the proposed method is acceptable Protect the unit from damage while lifting Ensure complete safety of operatives 4. Generally, all units are transported as laid, but for safety reasons of load stability, or economy, the units may be transported differently. The contractor should: Check in which orientation the units will be delivered Where units are delivered differently, establish a safe method of turning the units to the as laid orientation. (Further guidance can be obtained from FP McCann) Provide any equipment necessary for the operation 5. The security barriers may be offloaded into a storage area or they may be placed in a line alongside where they are to be laid. In either situation: Before offloading, check the units for any damage which may have occurred in transit and report any defects promptly Lower them carefully onto a firm level base Units should be moved by lifting and never by dragging In cold weather, protect open lifting sockets from freezing and bursting Site Preparation 1. The area where the units are to be located should be clean and level, with sufficient space to lay the units safely. Lifting equipment size and turning space should be considered 2. The units should be laid on a firm bearing such as a concrete base, thickness and strength of which should be determined by others, depending on site specific ground conditions. The contractor should: Consider the type of security barrier that is to be used and the height that is required, as this will affect the base Laying the Units Units should be lifted individually using the cast-in lifting sockets and loops for the Easi-Bloc and Pyra-Bloc and the cast-in toe holes for the safety barriers. Remove the plastic insert from the lifting points and ensure no damage has been caused to the sockets or lifting loops before lifting, where applicable Lifting loops should be fully screwed into the threaded socket inserts The area where the units are to be laid should be clean and free of debris Where units are lifted using forklift toes, ensure toes are keep horizontal at all times while inserting completely through the cast-in toe holes Whilst placing the units on-site, ensure they are lowered carefully into place so interlocking joints/connections are not damaged. This will allow the units to be reused at another location, if required (providing units have been dry laid) All units should be laid flush beside one another The interlocking units normally do not require any mortar between them unless the units are to be installed in an area where ground movement or impact from heavy plant or machinery is likely. If building more than one row high of easi-bloc units then the units should be offset using the brick stretcher bond method to provide additional strength. The top of each unit must also be brushed to ensure no debris will affect the stability or level of the units above If any adjustment to the level is necessary, remove the unit and adjust the surface level of the bedding, do not use local packing to adjust the level When the unit has been installed correctly, the lifting loop should then be removed and the plastic cover inserted to protect the lifting socket Disclaimer: This document is produced as a guideline document to assist contractors with the proper handling and installation of security barriers and is not intended to be a substitute for site and product specific handling procedures, lifting plans and procedures, relevant safe systems of work and/or method statements, if these are required.
