3 Setting the scene Many problems with invasive alien species (IAS). Eradication is almost impossible when they get established. Avoiding and eradication at first sight is most important. Therefore an early warning and rapid response system for IAS is needed. Thuja 2

4 Setting the scene Insufficient collaboration between the different institutes. There are only a few profesionals working on IAS, in order to get a fast detection observations of the public is needed. Information, communication and awareness raising campaigns in line with the priorities of the 7th Environment Action Programme

7 Project goal Thuja 2 To contribute to the reduction of the harmful impacts of invasive alien species on biodiversity by increasing public awareness and by setting up an efficient early warning and rapid response (EWRR) framework for invasive alien species in forests.

8 Project objectives 1. Increase awareness of the general public, in particularly of private forest owners, of threats caused by invasive alien species to forests. 2. Establish an efficient national institutional framework for early detection and rapid response for alien species in forests. 3. Improve the national capacity for early detection of alien species in forests by mobilising and training professionals and volunteers. Thuja 2
