1 ANA Arizona Nursery Association Grower s Committee Recommended Average Tree Specifications Arizona Nursery Association Grower s Committee The following Arizona Nursery Association Standards are intended as a guide to aid growers, buyers, and architects. The publication of these Arizona Nursery Association Standards does not in any respect prevent anyone whether a member of the Association or not from growing, marketing, distributing (brokerage), or buying plant materials that do not conform to these standards. Sizes may vary from recommended specifications due to market availability. These standards will be subject to periodic review and revision, and users are encouraged to contact the Association office at (480) to obtain a current copy of these guidelines. The Arizona Nursery Association Standards were prepared and published by the Growers of the Arizona Nursery Association. The Growers appreciate and acknowledge the assistance and cooperation of the Arizona branch of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for their review and contributions to the content of these standards. These specifications have, by design, been limited to trees sold in container sizes from 15 gallon to 48 boxes that are grown under conditions typical of the southwestern United States by ANA Growers. To obtain specifications for larger tree specimens, buyers are encouraged to contact a number of reputable suppliers in their area to determine what specifications are available. The height, width, and caliper measurements listed here are intended to represent RECOMMENDED specifications, not minimum acceptable specifications. Our intention is to describe a specimen with average (rather than minimal) specifications. MULTIPLE TRUNK TREE ( MULTI ): A multiple trunk tree is a tree with more than one main trunk. To be considered a multi, additional trunks must originate either from the soil line or at certain distances from the ground. For 24 box and 15 gallon trees,
2 additional trunks must originate no higher than 18 above the ground. For 30 and 36 box trees, additional trunks must originate no higher than 24 above the ground. The origination point is defined as the center of the trunk being considered and the soil line of the container. CALIPER DETERMINATION ON MULTIPLE TRUNK TREES: The caliper of multiple trunked trees is established by taking the average of the caliper of the two largest trunks. Caliper is measured at 6 above origination point of the second largest trunk or 6 above ground if all trunks originate from the soil. LOW BRANCH OR STANDARD TRUNKED TREES: Any tree which has additional trunks (scaffold branches) higher than the measurements outlined above are not considered multiple trunked trees. Whether or not such trees are considered standards or low branch standards is at the discretion of the buyer. No such distinction is made in the following specifications. Unless otherwise indicated, the numbers listed are intended to represent standard trunked trees. CALIPER DETERMINATION FOR STANDARD TREES: Trees with caliper equal to or less than 4 will be measured at 6 above the soil line. Caliper will be measured 12 above the soil line for trees with caliper greater than 4.
