1 A Forest Landowner s Guide to Internet Resources: States of the Northeast Fourth Edition April 2002 NORTHEASTERN AREA

2 Part 1: Publications, Brochures, and Fact Sheets The Northeastern Area is a USDA Forest Service designation for the 20 States and the District of Columbia as shown on the map above and listed below: Connecticut Maryland New York Delaware Massachusetts Ohio District of Columbia Michigan Pennsylvania Illinois Minnesota Rhode Island Indiana Missouri Vermont Iowa New Hampshire West Virginia Maine New Jersey Wisconsin The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or marital or family status. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.) Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (Braille, large print, audiotape, etc.) should contact USDA's TARGET Center at (202) (voice and TDD). To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326-W, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C or call (202) (voice and TDD). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

3 A Forest Landowner s Guide to Internet Resources: States of the Northeast This listing of internet resources was developed to provide you, the Non-Industrial Private Forest (NIPF) landowner, with a better understanding of the information and resources available on the internet relating to forest stewardship. In browsing the document, you ll hopefully find links to areas you re already interested in, and perhaps also find your interest captured by other, previously unfamiliar, aspects of forest stewardship. This document is structured as follows: Part 1: Publications, Brochures, and Fact Sheets Part 2: Internet Resources by State Part 3: Other Resources The selection of sites presented here is not intended to represent everything of possible interest to the NIPF landowner, nor should inclusion be considered an endorsement. This is especially true where the section on income tax and estate planning is concerned (Landowners are advised to seek professional guidance). Rather, it is the compiler s best effort at identifying what a typical NIPF landowner might find of most interest. While much useful information is available on the web, this is no substitute for a good working relationship with your local service, extension, or consulting forester. Furthermore, the web is a dynamic environment what is there today may not be there tomorrow, and links that work today may not work tomorrow and therefore we encourage you to continue to look to your local service, extension, or consulting forester as your primary source of information. If you are unsure of who your local state forestry contact is, visit the National Association of State Foresters web site at and click on your state for information on how to contact your state forestry office. To report broken links please contact Timothy Reynolds, at: tmreynolds@fs.fed.us If you have questions or suggestions for additions or deletions to this document, contact Mark Buccowich, USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry: mbuccowich@fs.fed.us; or This document is available on the web at: This fourth edition contains 113 new links, numerous address corrections, and some deletions, as documents and other publications have moved or disappeared. Additions are identified by the symbol in the left margin. If all goes as planned, the next edition, available in October 2002, will include annotations for eack link. Page 1

5 Part 1: Publications, Brochures, and Fact Sheets Part 1. Publications, Brochures, and Fact Sheets Each of the web sites listed here are included because, in the compiler s opinion, they were relevant to at least two states. Not every site is relevant to every state so the landowner using this guide will need to do some additional work to determine whether any given site is appropriate to his or her needs. Links primarily relevant to one particular state are listed, by state, in Part 2 of this document. This section includes the following categories: Recreation Wildlife/Hunting Income Tax and Estate Planning Economics of Forest Investments Tree Identification/Species Information Forest Health and Protection Seedling Suppliers/Tree Planting Forest Management Planning Sustainability and Certification Silviculture Forest Sampling and Inventory Forest Harvesting Operations Timber Sales Special Forest Products Riparian Forest and Wetland Management Biodiversity/Threatened and Endangered Species Maps and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Conservation Easements Glossaries of Forestry Terms Miscellaneous Note: Internet addresses that end in.pdf require Adobe Acrobat Reader software to open the file.
