The TCP provides information on each tree record surveyed, including tree number, tree retention category, crown spread and nominal root spread in the current context of the site. The TCP should be read in conjunction with the tree schedule and the tree quality assessment table from BS5837:2012 Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition and Construction provided at the rear of the tree schedule. Combined, this information illustrates the constraints posed by trees on and adjacent to the site. The TCP is supplied in AutoCAD.dwg/.dxf format along with a.pdf, which is appended. The AutoCAD version should be used to aid the design layout, ensuring that high value trees are afforded enough space and can be appropriately protected. 2 trees. In some cases, however, the removal of B category trees may be acceptable if it can be justified and sufficient mitigation is specified. The value provided by C category trees can generally be replaced, and trees of this category should not be considered a significant constraint. U category trees are trees in very poor condition that should be removed as good arboricultural management, and do not pose a constraint. We can advise further on these matters should you require. Tree Schedule The Tree Schedule provides detailed information on each tree in accordance with BS5837:2012 and can be cross referenced to the TCP. The information within the Tree Schedule helps inform decisions in relation to each tree record. Tree Constraints Tree constraints can be divided into two areas. Above Ground (Stem and Branches) The stem position indicates the quality category, and is coloured red (U), grey (C), blue (B) or green (A) in the TCP. The crown spread is illustrated with a green outline. The above ground constraints and consideration of each tree planned for retention include the juxtaposition between trees and planned buildings and infrastructure; the age, species and maturing space requirements of each retained tree; and safety management requirements in the context of the new environment, which are likely to include increased targets (people and/or property) below or within falling distance of the tree. Below Ground (Roots) Roots are represented on the TCP in terms of a Root Protection Area (RPA), shown as a red outline. The RPA represents the minimum area around a tree deemed to contain sufficient roots and rooting volume to maintain the tree s viability. It is important to bear in mind when designing near trees that the majority of tree roots are normally located in the top 600 mm of soil and that any activity in the RPA (including excavation, soil stripping, movement of vehicles, spillage of toxic materials, raising or reducing soil levels etc.) is likely to cause significant damage to trees unless suitable technical measures have been applied, through consultation with an Arboricultural Consultant. The Tree Schedule provides information on each tree record and recommendations, where necessary, based on the current context of the site. The information provided at this stage is not sufficient to submit with the planning application. It is intended to inform the design process only. If you need to discuss the design in relation to

3 the tree constraints as the layout progresses, please contact me directly. We can provide this consultancy support on a time spent basis in accordance with the fee proposal. Once the design and final layout have been produced, we will need to produce an Arboricultural Impact Assessment and Tree Protection Plan to support the planning submission. 14 Tree Schedule - KEY Tree Number Trees are tagged with metal tags where agreed. Where this has not been agreed, tree numbers within the Tree Schedule relate to those marked on the Tree Constraints Plan and Tree Protection Plan drawings. Height (metres) All heights are estimated. Where feasible or appropriate height estimation is carried out with the aid of a clinometer or similar device. Clearance (metres) Distance above ground level of the lowest point of the crown periphery in order to inform access beneath crowns where appropriate or required. ULE Useful Life Expectancy. The anticipated future contribution to the amenity of the site. This may be influenced by the current or anticipated change in site use. Single or Group One tree within a group of trees may be tagged in order to identify trees of a relatively uniform arboricultural or landscape feature. This may include a linear screen, hedge, or group of trees not considered as appropriate to survey as a single tree. Number in Group Number of trees within a group. A group of trees may comprise of more than one species. Species Scientific or common name is presented. For trees within groups the species together with the numbers of each species within the group is presented as accurately as possible, but in circumstances where the tree groups are complex, the numbers and the species composition may be estimated by the surveyor.. Number of Stems A record of 1 indicates a tree with a single stem at 1.5m above ground level. Where more than 1 stem is recorded each stem will be measured at 1.5m above ground level and the RPA calculated in line with BS5837:2012. Stem or base diameter (displayed in centimetres) Stems are measured in accordance with BS5837:2012. The diameter of tree stems are measured at 1.5m with a diameter tape or callipers (Diamter at Breast Height). All measurements are rounded down to the nearest cm. DBH measurements shown in bold are estimates either due to restricted access to the tree stem or base or due to climbing plant growth about the stem restricting the accuracy of a measurement. Spread Radius (metres) The crown radius from bole to crown limit identified at the four cardinal points (N, S, E and W) in order to allow presentation of the above ground constraints on the Tree Constraints Plan and Tree Protection Plan. Measurements are approximate and depend on clear access about the crown. May be estimated from aerial photographs. (Y) Young, (MA) Middle Aged, (M), (OM) Over, (A/V) Ancient / Veteran.
