1 ISSUE 78 US $3.00 WINTER 2007 Wood-Mizer CEO, Jeff Laskowski, Log Rolls Against World Champion... Guess Who Won?

2 From the CEO Can it really be approaching the end of another year? The date on my computer tells me that we are, even though it seems like only yesterday that we were planning our 25th Anniversary Celebrations for By the time most of you read this letter you will have celebrated another Thanksgiving and be preparing for the Christmas holiday season. I hope and pray your year has been blessed and the holidays will be merry for each of you. This year has already been one full of celebration for the entire Wood-Mizer company and many of you have shared in that celebration at one or more of our seventeen 25th Anniversary events. I had the chance to meet many of you for the first time and be reacquainted with a few that I know from the early years of the company. For those that celebrated with us, I say thanks for making the events special by your attendance, and for those that weren t able to attend, I wish you could have enjoyed the times we spent together. One other significant milestone will have occurred by the time this newsletter gets into your hands. As many of you know, the Wood-Mizer company was founded and owned by my father, Don Laskowski and his partner, Dan Tekulve when it started in In 2004, both of the company founders sold their stock to the employees through an ESOP, which is a qualified retirement trust that benefits the retirement of the Wood-Mizer employees. The trust borrowed money to buy Don and Dan s shares and that loan is now paid so that over 54% of the company is in the ESOP. That isn t the most significant milestone. The most significant milestone is that by the time you read this, the ESOP will have purchased the balance of the shares in the company so that Wood-Mizer is now 100% owned by the ESOP. Will you see any difference in how the company is run, now that it is 100% employee owned? Will you see a shift in how we treat our customers? Will we change the Biblical foundations on which the company was founded? As CEO of the company, I can say with certainty that the company will continue firmly down the path established by the founders. If anything, now that the success of the company impacts the retirement of each and every employee of the business, I think you will see an even stronger commitment to you as a customer, to our products, and to our commitment to the Christian heritage that has been key to our continued success. You will still interact with the same people, but each of them will now have an even greater stake in the success of the company because they own it. As always, I hope that at least one of the customers featured in this newsletter will somehow inspire you to move just a little closer to your dreams. The year 2008 is just around the corner and the only thing holding us back from making this our best year, is the doubt that sometimes keeps us from achieving all that God has intended for our lives. Reach for your dreams. They are probably closer than you think. Have a safe and blessed Christmas and We ll be here to help make it your best W. 10th Street Indianapolis, IN EDITOR Deanna Bunten, ART DIRECTORS Warren Miller Jason Myers Chad Sanders Carla Shroyer CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Carolee Anita Boyles Deanna Bunten Derek Clay Melissa Conrad Ron Grech Brian Hind PHONE dbunten@woodmizer.com MAIL 8180 West 10th Street Indianapolis, IN REPRINTS AND PERMISSIONS Reprints are available at a nominal charge to customers. Established in 1906, Shingu-Shoko is committed to nurturing people and trees with an emphasis on forest management and equipment distribution. The company takes pride in selecting the best equipment through personal experiences at their managed forests and mill operations. Representatives from the company visited Wood-Mizer on October 25, 2007, as part of the process in becoming a Wood-Mizer International dealer. In addition to Wood- Mizer sawmills, Shingu-Shoko carries a reputable line of products including chain saws, grapples, log splitters, wood burning stoves, garden machinery, and more. Closed for the Holidays Wood-Mizer s offices will be closed to celebrate Christmas on Tuesday, December 25. Our Sales and Service will be available on Monday, December 24 from 8am 3pm.We will also be closed for New Years on Tuesday, January 1. We wish you and your family a joyous holiday season. SmallWorld While planning the Wood-Mizer 25th Anniversary Grand Finale, the team decided to have a professional take an aerial photograph of the event. A local gentleman, Dale P. Byrom, and his wife Carole, were contacted for their services. When the event was over, we learned Mr. Byrom is actually Reverend Byrom and his true passion is Missionary Aviation. The pastor, through Help Ministries, provides vital transportation to missionaries. He is also good friends with a family that has dedicated their lives to missionary work in a village in Suriname that uses a Wood-Mizer portable sawmill. Isn t it wonderful the way good people and good work come together! 25th Anniversary Tour Thank You As this year comes to a close, we want to once again thank everyone who was a part of our anniversary tour. We are grateful to our customers, employees, suppliers, and co-founders for sharing our 25th anniversary milestone with us. It has been an amazing year as we looked back at the dream Don Laskowski and Dan Tekulve envisioned 25 years ago, celebrated where we are today as a family, and set our sights on the future. Making an Impression The International Sales team at Wood-Mizer attended the Expo Forestal in Guadalajara, Mexico in September to display and demonstrate Wood-Mizer sawmills. This event is one of the most important forestry events for the country and was attended by Mexican President, Felipe Calderón; who made it a point to stop by our booth. We were honored he made arrangements to specifically visit our booth and personally run one of our mills. We set up an LT70 with remote for him to operate and evaluate. Whether we are showing mills on our lot out back or around the world, we feel the Proof s in the Performance. 6 Grand The Finale Celebrating Sawmills The Wood-Mizer Way By Derek Clay Contributing Writer Indy Event #17 Fun Facts: Over 30 states represented Furthest state Hawaii Wood-Mizer owner Mark Hinds performed as Kenny Rogers, an act he has done over the last 17 years...even at The Legends in Concert show in Las Vegas! Special Wood-Mizer song was written and performed by songwriter Tracy Richardson titled, Livin Out Their Dream. (CD copies available upon request, $5.00 each). Little Nemo is actually a good dancer, too! Wood-Mizer Products, Inc. celebrated its 25th anniversary this year with a road show that took the party to its people. It was a celebration so grand; it traveled the country for 17 distinct and enjoyable shows. The Grand Finale event, held Saturday, October 13, at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana, culminated the year-long celebration. I had the honor of attending this event and found it reminiscent of a county fair -- only better! After months of preparation -- culling talent from Wood-Mizer customers and employees, hauling in enough food to feed an army of sawyers, rolling out a portable water tank sawn on a Wood-Mizer, by the way, to spotlight world-class athletes in log-rolling and sawing competitions, and rounding up vendors who supply the best quality parts and materials -- the gates opened for a day of fun, food and reflection on what has made Wood-Mizer Products such a unique and successful business. A bountiful breakfast was available throughout the morning for everyone strolling the grounds; sometimes unaware they were walking side-byside with the company s founders and leadership. As the sun continued to shine joy on the event, a ceremony was held to welcome everyone and get the day started. Sawmill demonstrations and seminars took place all day, children played in inflatable playgrounds, and adults learned about new products on the horizon, such as the Bio-Mizer, took test drives on a variety of Lastec lawn mowers, and shopped at the Wood-Mizer store. It was wonderful from the registration desk to the closing remarks, wrote Jim and Cyrena Westfall, Wood-Mizer LT40 owners from West Lafayette, Indiana. The day went too fast. My husband and I loved it all. At the end of the day, guests were treated to dinner and evening program. It began by recognizing Wood-Mizer s suppliers who participated in the year-long tour. One of Wood-Mizer s platinum tour sponsors was Chicago Tube and Iron. The company s President, Don McNeeley, addressed the audience and passionately talked about what it means to him to work with a company that puts faith, ethics, charitable giving, and most importantly their customers first. With a variety show format, the entertainment kicked off with comedian Carl Hurley lightening the hearts of guests. He was not the only one who made the crowd laugh, though. Wood-Mizer s own Little Nemo lumberjack skit had some new twists and old favorites. Another entertainer was Wood-Mizer sawmill owner and professional Kenny Rogers impersonator Mark Hinds who took requests and performed some of the crowd s favorite songs. A very special song was written and performed by Tracy Richardson. Livin Out Their Dream was written specifically to capture Wood-Mizer s 25th milestone. The final performers were Kim and Brian Tabor. With a professional musical ministry, they had no problem filling the room with energy as they sang inspirational and patriot songs. When they closed their show, the stage was set to draw

7 the winner of the $26,000 anniversary LT40 Hydraulic sawmill. With anticipation in the air, Wood- Mizer s founder Don Laskowski extended the honor of drawing the winner to his wife Phyllis. Aaron Miller, who had traveled to the event from Missouri, was in the audience. Quietly and reserved he stood at his chair and raised his hand as if he was in disbelief. He came forward and shared one powerful sentence with the crowd; This is an answer to prayer. Aaron accepted the mill, poised for pictures, and received congratulations from so many people. For some, sawing logs has a humorous meaning, but, in my opinion, Wood-Mizer didn t sleep away its opportunity to be the best portable sawmill producer in the world. A devotion to hard work, ethical business practices and a commitment to glorify God through its faith and works, Wood-Mizer and its founders have enjoyed a success that many businesses will never know. That success is always passed on to the customers, who have become family members in this venture of Making Dreams Come True. 12 The Wood-Mizer Way Winter

By Carolee Anita Boyles Contributing Author Indiana Pallet Maker Turns to Wood-Mizer s Industrial Affiliate 14 The Wood-Mizer Way Winter 2007 The following excerpt is reprinted from an article that ran in the June 2007 issue of Pallet Enterprise magazine. When the time came for Coomer & Sons Sawmill to buy a second sawmill for its pallet operation, the Coomers looked around and found a sawmill manufacturer 40 miles away: Wood-Mizer Products and its affiliated industrial division, AWMV Industrial Products. In fact, one of the reasons they chose Wood- Mizer and AWMV was their proximity. We figured if we had any problems, we didn t have to hassle with getting them on the phone, said Jeff Coomer, one of the family members in the sawmill business. We could just drive over there and find them. Good thinking, but no one at Coomer & Sons has had to go looking for anyone at Wood-Mizer or AWMV. In fact, the two companies have developed a close working relationship that has helped both of them. Coomer & Sons is located in central Indiana in Frankfort, which has about 15,000 residents. The company manufactures pallets and mulch and supplies them to customers within about a 100-mile radius. Coomer & Sons serves companies that ship automotive filters, plastics, recyclables, tires, and many other products. Having a diverse customer base that represents many varied industries helps smooth out any highs and lows in the pallet business and keeps the sawmill going pretty steadily. The cycles of markets for residuals mulch and sawdust also are complementary. Sales of sawdust increase in the winter, and sales of mulch increase in the summer. Coomer & Sons Sawmill was started by Jeff s father, Charles, in His father bought the business when it was financially ailing. The operation had a forklift, a radial arm saw and some customers. Charles operated the business out of a garage and barn with a few saws. He began buying pallet material and assembling pallets by hand with pneumatic nailing tools. He had four or five employees when he started. Charles had five children: Dennis, Kevin, Jeff, Chris and Michelle. All have played a role in the family business at one time or another. Dennis oversees truck and trailer maintenance and helps with deliveries. Today, Jeff supervises the sawmill operations, pallet sales and deliveries. Chris is in charge of mulch operations, which produce about 60,000 cubic...continued on page 20 Our first sawmill came to life with a clear-cut goal: produce finished lumber right off the mill. And while our mills do a great job of cutting wood, we wanted to make a machine dedicated entirely to edging lumber. That s how our Twin Blade Edger was born. Its 26HP Diesel engine packs amazing power (also available with 28HP Gas or 15HP Electric) for a major boost in production. You ll be able to edge boards from 3" (7.6cm) to 15" (38.1cm) wide. One blade stays in place and you move the other with a lever to adjust the cutting width. Rough, bark-edged boards go in one side, and square, clean-edged boards come out the other! And this edger is so easy to use it won t feel like work at all! The Wood-Mizer Twin Blade Edger is the answer to getting the faster operation and increased production you ve always wanted. Right: Wood-Mizer s dealership in Korea is run by Ji, sung hawn, who has been attending tradeshows to introduce Wood-Mizer sawmills. Articulator 16 The Rigid Wood-Mizer Deck Articulator Way Winter Rigid 2007 Deck In one breath we can talk about the world as a vast and expansive planet that has millions of miles of river and ocean, exotic lands, and infinite possibilities. Yet, in another moment, we encounter ways the world is becoming smaller and more connected with the help of air travel, technology and even sawmills. As you may recall in our Summer 2007 issue (# 76) we had a story on Ji, sung hawn; a Korean builder using a Wood-Mizer LT15 to build several vacation homes near Seoul. These timber frame homes were impressive in size and design. As a matter of fact, these homes were so impressive that a Japanese home and lifestyle magazine featured one on the cover. In addition to the momentum Ji and his construction business are experiencing, he became a dealer for Wood-Mizer on August 14, Recently, he set up an impressive Wood-Mizer display at the 17th BUSAN KYUNGHYANG HOUSING FAIR 2007 in Busan, a big port and big city geographically located in the Southeast Korean Peninsula. According to Ji, the crowds were large and very interested in the perfect, portable sawmills. Welcome to the family Wood-Mizer Korea! 61 SERIES MOWERS THREE CUTTING HEADS ARE ALWAYS BETTER THAN ONE Lastec s articulating 61 Series decks do more than just improve cut accuracy. They allow a wider range of striping options by letting you approach any terrain from any angle. They make the mower less likely to get stuck in ditches and mounds that would otherwise require hand mowing or string trimming. They also eliminate tree rings, stair stepping, and gouges in side hills. In the right application a Lastec Articulator can virtually eliminate enough hand work to cut your mowing time in half. There s a term for what the 61 Series Articulators do every day they are in the field HD Mowing. The position and responsibilities were a natural fit for him because he owned a Wood-Mizer sawmill and used it on a daily basis; operating a custom sawing business. At that time, Jim Brown was the Branch Manager for Wood-Mizer South and needed some extra help. He offered Earl a position and the next day he went to a show and helped demonstrate the sawmills. For nearly two years, he was a valuable team member of Wood-Mizer South. In 1990, Earl had to say good-bye to his job at Wood-Mizer and his work family to tend to the needs of his wife s kin in Kentucky. He didn t say good-bye to his Wood-Mizer sawmill. With his machine and family at this side, he took up sawmilling full-time again. For the next 10 years, Earl cut lumber with a Wood-Mizer hydraulic mill. His hands-on experience made him a master at sawmilling, but his reserved nature would never make such a boastful claim. Earl returned to Wood-Mizer on October 23, 2000, and is back to serving customers for Wood-Mizer South. For the past seven years, he has done service on mills, shipped parts, made deliveries, trained customers, and sawed at countless shows. He likes the variety and challenges that come with the job. Nathan Collins, Wood-Mizer South Branch Manager, has a strong appreciation for Earl and his abilities. Earl s vast experience as a sawyer and mechanic are a tremendous asset to our company and customers. His no nonsense approach and get the job done attitude have been crucial to Wood-Mizer South s success, comments Nathan. Earl has great respect for Nathan, as well. Nathan is a great guy to work for and I feel like any job after this will be down hill. Earl not only knows Nathan as a boss, but from a customer s point of view. Back when Earl was sawing full time, he had an engine blow on his sawmill. I ran the Onan engine on my LT40 hard. It had 2,000 hours on it and one Friday afternoon blew. I called Nathan and he said he could get it replaced. I loaded up my family and the mill and met him at the shop on Saturday. He had the engine replaced in two hours and I was back in Kentucky sawing at 7:00 Monday morning. Once you are around Earl, it is obviously he is not afraid of hard work. When he takes the time to get away, he enjoys flying. He has been known to lease an airplane to visit his daughter in Florida. He and his wife, Gwyn, have been married for 34 years and also have a son and 2 grandchildren. That is why it is important to get your sawmill and blades ready for the cold freezing weather. Here are a few things to consider: Blade Hook Angle Frozen logs saw differently. If you have been using a general purpose 10 degree blade, drop back on the hook angle to 4 or 9 degrees. This will help get a clean and smooth cut. These hook angles have the ability to pull the sawdust out of the cut. With the sawdust out of the way it can t freeze back on the log and cause problems for your blades. If the logs you are sawing are just starting to freeze, they will freeze from the outside to the inside so set up your blade for the frozen outside and cut back on your feed rate as you enter the softer center. Here is a helpful hint if you are using ReSharp for sharpening your 10 degree blades: Our 4 degree and 9 degree blades have less set so ask ReSharp to reduce the set for winter sawing. If you are using an AGA Sharpener, cams are available. Blade Width If you are running a LT40 Super or higher horsepower mill and been using 1½ blades, look at changing to 1¼. The 1¼ blades have less resistance to the cut. When a 1½ blade is used for frozen logs, the sawdust can build up under the blade and cause it to dive during the cut. A narrower blade reduces that possibility Try our x 1¼ or 4 profile. The LubeMizer TM system helps melt away sap with ease. It features an adjustable electronic flow controller and pump that applies a special lubricating solution to both sides of the blade. LubeMizer TM additive can be used in small amounts for a little sap and used in the continuous mode to tackle blades with encrusted sap. For Winter: Just mix 1 gallon of windshield washer fluid to 5 gallons of your lubrication liquid for the best results. Blade Thickness A frozen log makes for hard sawing so you will want a blade that can get in there and stay in there without flexing. A thicker blade will handle a frozen log better because it has more beam strength. When you cut with a thicker blade (.045 and.055) it will maintain a straight blade as it gnaws through the frozen log Be sure to pull the blade when dull; the.055 will cut straight even when dull, causing premature breakage. Lubrication for Winter Blade lubrication will increase your sawing performance, life between sharpening, and overall flex life. Whether you are using water, cooking oil, pine sol, or our LubeMizer additive, add windshield washer fluid to keep it from freezing. Mix 1 gallon of windshield washer fluid to 5 gallons of your lubrication liquid. Also, sawdust build up on the roller and inside the band in winter will change the clearance between the blade and the guide; forcing the blade down. This will cause friction and result in cracking and ultimately breaking the blade. Proper lubrication will keep your blade guides and pads clean. Other Tips Make sure your blade guide rollers and sliding arm are tightened and properly aligned Make sure your B57 belts are in good condition and not flat or torn Make sure your engine drive belts are tightened to recommended tensions Add diesel fuel conditioner to your engine as recommended by manufacturer s specifications LubeMizer High Performance Lubrication System A simple solution to a sticky problem Order Today! In Canada Proper blade lubrication will reduce sap build-up, increase sawing performance, and extend the life of the blade. (Currently, the LubeMizer TM High Performance Sawing System is available as an option on new Part no. add-1 Wood-Mizer mills, and as a retrofit for our non-remote, 12-volt mills built after April 1997). 19

In fact, they work together. Whenever Kevin has a need, they help him, and when they have a need, he helps them. It is still a family business despite two locations; they support and help each other whenever necessary. The company continued to grow and moved to its current location. In 1981, Coomer & Sons bought its first sawmill, a Meadows Mill portable sawmill; they ran it for a few years but outgrew it. Over the years the company added trucking capability, too; today Coomer & Sons owns five semi-tractors and a number of trailers. Coomer & Sons buys hardwood logs from logging contractors. Sometimes it sends company trucks to a logging job or wood yard to pick up logs. Anything you can think of, U.S Canada we cut, Jeff said. We re not particular since it s going to pallets. The company buys 5 million board feet of logs a year. When logs arrive at the sawmill, they are unloaded and stacked in inventory or put directly onto infeed decks to go into the sawmill. Bark is removed with an HMC debarker. After debarking, the logs go to either an AWMV LT300 thin-kerf head rig or to a ForestAll circular mill. The AWMV LT300 sawmill runs thinkerf band blades and is capable of producing high quality lumber and also increasing yield compared to circular sawmills. According to AWMV, it can cut 800-1,200 board feet of grade lumber per hour and produce 40% more lumber than a circular saw. The AWMV LT300 is powered by a 30 hp electric motor. It is equipped with an operator station, 25-inch wheels for the band blade, a chain log turner, air strain tension system and computerized setworks. It has a cruise control feature that automatically regulates feed speed to the highest possible rate for maximum production. Other features include roller toe Step Up to the LT Wood-Mizer Products, Inc. 20 boards, joystick controls and laser sight. AWMV manufactures optional material handling equipment for the LT300, including log decks, inclined conveyor and transfer table, to make it easy to integrate into a new installation or existing mill. At Coomer & Sons Sawmill, the AWMV is used primarily for squaring up logs into 4x4 or 6x6 cants. The circular mill, also equipped with a vertical edger, serves pretty much the same function, producing three-sided or four-sided cants. Four-sided cants produced on the ForestAll usually are resawn on a cut-up system a cut-off saw and gang saw into 2x4 material for stringers. Cants produced by the LT300 generally are routed to two AWMV multi-head band resaws, a four-head system or a six-head system. The two resaws produce ½-inch and 5/8-inch deck boards. The deck boards go to a de-duster to be brushed clean of sawdust. Pallet assembly operations are automated with a Viking Duo-Max nailing machine. It produces between 1,800 and 2,000 pallets a day. Custom pallets, small orders and other specialty products, such as boxes or crates, are assembled by hand with Stanley-Bostitch pneumatic nailing tools. The company uses Mid Continent bulk nails and Stanley-Bostitch bulk and collated nails. The decision to choose AWMV Industrial Products to supply the new head rig was based on quality as well as location. The Coomers knew the company and its products, and both enjoy a good reputation. That decision has served the company well. Not only has the AWMV equipment been virtually trouble free, the Coomers have developed a cooperative relationship with Wood-Mizer, field testing new blades and equipment as an extension of Wood- Mizer s research and development efforts. The Coomers do a lot of blade testing for us when we re trying new profiles, widths and thicknesses, said Randy Panko, national blade sales manager for Wood-Mizer. We take the bands up to them. They re so close that we can just run up there in the truck and put the blade on and see how it cuts. The unbiased feedback the company has received from the Coomers has been accurate and helpful. In the spring of 2006, AWMV called the Coomers and asked them to test the prototype of a new debarker for the LT300. They tried it and worked well to help Wood-Mizer get the production model ready to manufacture. AWMV asked them to try it, and if they liked it, they could keep it. The debarker now runs on the Coomer LT300, and it is available to AWMV customers. Coomer & Sons Sawmill would like to see more growth in the next few years and incorporate grandchildren into the business. If history is any predictor of the future, the Coomers will meet that challenge the way they have every other one that s come along: with integrity, initiative and a sense of family. 12 From The Wood-Mizer Case Files Location: Hollsopple, Pennsylvania Item Stolen: Wood-Mizer LT15 Case No.: q Jordan Speigle Admits to Stealing a Wood-Mizer LT15 Sawmill...Sort of Written by: Melissa Conrad Contributing Writer Jordan Speigle s Garden Tool Shed was built using traditional timber-frame techniques and wood cut on an LT15 Sawmill. Guilty or Innocent You Decide In the accused s own words T he plans for the timber-framed garden tool shed that we built were taken from a book by Jack A. Sobon and Roger Schroeder called Timber Frame Construction. I actually had no plans of even building the shed until my dad, Harlan Speigle, bought the book and the Wood-Mizer. In it they teach you all about post and beam construction and its history. Then there s a section that shows you how to build the garden tool shed, which is based on an old Shaker design. He continues, So basically reading the book inspired me to build the shed, now I just needed some trees to experiment on. My dad, who actually bought the sawmill, has many trees on our 100 acre farm but, I didn t want to experiment with his trees. Sealing his guilt and naming his accomplices and willing partners-in-crime Jordan added, So my buddy, Tim Mock, who just recently bought some land, had a very nice stand of tall, straight, and easily accessible white pine, and didn t mind the idea of having a nice big shed either. So, one Saturday in November of 2004, when my dad was away for the weekend, (Editor s Note: Do Not Leave Your Wood-Mizer Sawmill unattended unless you need a good garden tool shed) myself, Tim and his two brothers Mike and Steve, who were willing to help build the shed, stole (Editor Disclaimer: Jordan s word not our word but it s worth repeating here) STOLE the sawmill for the day, whacked down some trees at Tim s, and started sawing posts and beams for the shed. The LT15 worked great and we were able to easily haul it and one extension to Tim s on the back of a truck. We worked hard all day and probably got about a third of the sawing done, but we had plenty of nice 8x8 beams to start doing some joinery on. Besides a circular saw and heavy duty drill with 2 Forstner bit to bore out mortises, we used mostly hand tools on the shed joinery: chisels, hatchets, handsaws, and squares. Also we made all of the hardwood pegs by hand, including cherry, black walnut for contrast and ash and oak. As if Jordan Speigle had not already confessed to a crime, he continued his uncoerced self-incrimination, Throughout the winter whenever we had free time we either worked on joinery or STOLE the LT15 to do some more sawing. (Editor s Note: It is becoming clear that Jordan fits the description and demonstrates common traits of the typical repeat offender according to Wood-Mizer case files. His crime spree continues.) Free time was rare though because most of my time was spent helping my dad saw and skid logs off our land for a house we were building that summer. Also I was taking college classes at the time, but to be honest, my mind was mostly thinking about the shed. (Editor s Note: Wood-Mizer crime profiles suggest that the victim usually knows the perpetrator of the theft and that the perp has somehow gained the trust of the victim through random acts of kindness.) Without asking for his attorney, Jordan continues, So all winter we worked on the frame when we had the time, usually evenings, and finally had it done and raised it one wet, snowy day in April. It was very exciting and rewarding to see the joints fit so well and to see the frame go up so fast. Continues the admitted accused Jordan Speigle, We (suggesting further involvement by the accomplices) decided to put the shed up a little bit behind Tim s house, right in front of the big stand of pine that we got the trees from. Steve, Tim s brother, (Editor s Note to Steve: take the 5th when it s your turn to talk) had to do a little excavating with a small backhoe Tim rented (sure rented.sorry the editor is getting carried away) RENTED from the John Deere dealership that Steve and Mike work at. So with the frame up, it was time to close it in with siding which would require a lot more sawing but now time was fleeting because I was starting my full-time summer construction job, plus helping my dad most nights and weekends lay the foundation for the house and do framing. The timber-frame structure features So, throughout the spring and summer we mortise and tenon joinery. pieced away at the shed putting on siding and the roof, floors, and windows, finishing it in August, says Jordan, clearly seeking the mercy of the court or, at the minimum, time off for good behavior. The Wood-Mizer saved us thousands of dollars because not many companies do timber frame construction, so I m sure it would be expensive to buy one. Tim s only expenses were the steel roof, $480; screws for the siding, $150; and boiled linseed oil to preserve the wood, $150; hinges, and some old barn windows for one dollar at an auction. Grand total coming to $781 for the garden tool shed and maybe a little time in the big house if Jordan persists in his criminal activity....continued on page 27 The garden tool shed is 14 wide x 20 long. 22 The Wood-Mizer Way Winter

13 Wood-Mizer helps reach past the 10 million board feet level Earl and Lee Davidson have a sawmill operation using a Wood-Mizer LT40 Super Hydraulic and a Twin Blade Edger. Portable Sawmill Business Edges Past a Major Milestone IT S SIMPLE It s simple simple simple to run. It s simple simple simple simple It s a resaw that will simply make you money. Editor s Note: As you read the following story, reprinted for The Working Forest Newspaper in Canada, we think one word will come to mind: Dedication. For 22 years, the Davidson s have been sawing lumber reaching a remarkable 10 million board feet. Their story is an inspiration to all who saw for a living. Wood-Mizer congratulates Earl and Lee on their achievement and everyone who saws their way to a dream. Written By: Ron Grech Contributing Writer Increase Production Over 30% See ad on page 15. The Davidson s purchased a Twin Blade Edger to meet production needs. Manufacturing more than 10 million board feet of lumber is an impressive milestone for a husband-and-wife team equipped with a portable sawmill. Earl and Lee Davidson are the owners of Earl-Lee s Portable Sawmill, a business they launched in They re based in the southeastern community of Eganville (Ontario, Canada). It s a unique operation in the sense that both husband and wife work together handson, manufacturing lumber from raw timber. Lee usually works the portable sawmill and Earl operates an edger. They also have two employees helping them out. We cut well over 500,000 board feet a year and we ve sawn 10,187,557 board feet since we started, Earl said recently. I don t know anyone with a portable sawmill whose cut that much. They work on a contract basis, bringing their sawmill and edger to sites where the logs have to be cut. They ve also done a lot of work for farmers and woodlot owners in their area who need lumber to put up a barn, cow shed or a new house. Every second house that was built on our road, I think we cut the wood for. Earl has owned three portable sawmills since starting up the business. He s upgraded in that time from manual-push portable sawmill to one equipped with hydraulics. The one he owns now, he purchased 10 years ago. The Davidsons have a Wood-Mizer LT40 Super Hydraulic portable sawmill powered with a diesel engine. At the same time, he also added a Wood-Mizer twin-blade edger. Since Earl couldn t operate two machines at the same time, he asked Lee to work the sawmill. Up to that point, Lee had been focusing on other aspects of the business. I used to set the blades and did the bookwork: plus we had a young family, two young children to take care of so I was busy doing that. Lee credits her husband for instructing her well on the use of the sawmill. It took me a good six months before I felt comfortable enough to be making a few decisions on my own. She likes the hydraulics on the sawmill. Another feature she likes is the debarker. When we didn t have the debarker, 2007 Wood-Mizer Products, Inc. there was a lot of chopping and blade changing. Their Wood-Mizer LT40 Super Hydraulic portable sawmill cuts up to 550 board feet per hour and comes standard with hydraulic loading arms, a pair of hydraulic roller toeboards, a hydraulic log clamp, and a hydraulic log turner. The machine cuts logs that are up to 21 feet (6.4 metres) in length but Davidsons have theirs equipped with a six-foot extension that allows them to saw logs reaching up to 27 feet (8.2 metres). I was working in the auto industry in southern Ontario. I bought a woodlot thinking I d like to build a house. Then I saw an ad for a portable sawmill and it got me thinking. I thought that might be a good business to get into. There wasn t anyone in the area with a portable bandsaw and I imagined there would probably be a demand for that, said Earl. The first few years it was a bit nip and tuck but it s grown into a full time business now. Reprinted with Permission The Working Forest Newspaper In Canada The Davidson s have been sawing since 1985 and have cut more than 10 million board feet. 25

Columbus, OH Cranbury, NJ Jacksonville, FL Miami, FL...Wood-Mizer Crime Files continued from page 23 Seemingly unrepentant for his crimes, Jordan continues, I had a great time building the shed and also doing the sawing for it. We had only owned the Wood-Mizer for about two months before we started the shed so sawing everything by myself really helped me learn how to saw very efficiently. The Wood-Mizer is so accurate and easy to operate that I can now saw any log and get exactly what I want out of it and manage it so nothing is wasted but some bark and a little sapwood, testifies Speigle. The quality of wood we sawed for the shed is incredible. Plus, it only took, I think, 10 or 11 tress all less than 18-inch diameter to build the shed. Closing Argument: The accused continues to represent himself, the only problem with the whole project is that now I m constantly thinking of other things I d like to build. Someday I d like to timber frame my own house and I know I can make it happen with a Wood-Mizer. (Editor s Note: Like we said earlier readers, lock up your Wood-Mizer this is clearly now a case of premeditated larceny.) Hopefully though, by that time my Dad and I (Editor s Note Again: what s yours is mine mentality just saying) will get a Super Hydraulic which we ve been dreaming of getting someday. We already sawed a lot with the LT15, especially for our house which is now up. Right now we re working on getting it sealed up for the winter. We sawed most of it, over 300 2x6s for the exterior walls, over 3,000 board feet for the roof sheathing instead of buying expensive plywood. We sawed a quarter of the floor joists we needed, about 100, but handling green 2 x10 x16 joists are no fun. Also, we plan on re-sawing much of the timbers and boards in the old, drafty farm house we live in now to use as finish boards and also a timber frame that will be used in the new house. (Editor s Note: A work-release plea bargain was apparently reached between the parties in this case.) Case Closed and In Conclusion: So, thanks for reading all of this, and making the Wood-Mizer and making the shed possible, says Jordan Speigle. (Editor s Note: Oh he didn t just implicate Wood-Mizer as an accomplice now did he? This guy sings like a canary). Jordan lives in Hollsopple, Pennsylvania. At the time of this crime spree, he was just 21 years old. Last we heard no charges had been filed in the case. We did receive a report that he was recently seen at a show demonstrating timber frame construction where he and his brother-in-law raised and lowered a 14 x20 frame. They have started a business together and are building timber frame structures for other people. Case Details: Garden Tool Shed 20 long, 14 wide, 16 to peak Total Sq. Ft. 470 Total board feet cut on your (or, of course, your dad s) Wood-Mizer mill to complete the project: a little over 4,100 board feet Percentage of project completed with lumber cut on your (you get the idea) mill: 100% Jordan used the post and beam method where the actual frame is the load bearer, not the walls. Everything in the frame is either 8x8 or 4x4 and they are tied together with tight fitting mortise and tenon joinery held together with only hardwood pegs. The siding is board and batten style, 8 boards with 2 batten strips over the joints. It s a great feeling to finally have the shed done. I can t believe we actually built it. (Editor s Note: We can t believe you stole your dad s Wood-Mizer sawmill to do it but, thanks for such a great story Jordan and for being such a good sport. Our special thanks to Jordan s dad, Harlan Speigle, for actually purchasing the Wood-Mizer Sawmill as opposed to stealing one.) I love timber frames and really wanted to learn how to do it and the Wood-Mizer made it possible. It is by far the coolest thing I ve ever done, says Jordan. (Final Editor s Note: Congratulations on Making Your Dreams Come True!) Top: The siding is board and batten style with 8 boards and 2 batten strips over the joints. As a matter of fact, there have been 4,300 mill operations that have gone out of business. However, a small sawmill in Northern France has beat the odds. Produit Forestier has found the right combination of equipment and products to be successful. When business partners, Jean-Michel Defrene, 41 and Roland Roger, 52 bought Produit Forestier it was struggling. The company had been around since 1985 and had made little changes. In 2004, the two men evaluated the business and decided to keep the old Rennepont band saw and complement it with a Wood-Mizer MultiHead horizontal band saw. Working these two units as a team, they converted 40,000m3 (16,951,040 BF) of pine and poplar logs to pallet components down to 14mm (0.55 ) thick and up to 600mm (23.62 ) in length. The result: they increased their volume by one-third. Just as business seemed to be getting better, their other old band saw, a Gillet, was burned down by an arsonist. The initially, devastating blow became a cloud with a silver lining when they replaced it with a Wood- Mizer semi-industrial LT70 band sawmill at the end of We reckon that we further can increase output to 60,000m3 (25,426,560 BF) with the LT70 and rather wish we d replaced the ancient Gillet sooner, grins Jean-Michel who used to work as a sawyer under the former owner of the firm. Roland, who used to work in a local ironworks, added that if he and Jean-Michel hadn t bought out the former owner, the sawmill might well have closed. With the Rennepont, LT70, and MultiHead, Produit Forestier has cornered a niche market by manufacturing components for clients to assemble their own pallets. In France, most customers make pallets for their own industrial equipment like steel railway equipment and also special pallets for export. As a result, Produit Forestier s order books are full due to their ability to make very thin boards in relatively small quantities. The company s pallet boards are shipped mostly within a 100Km (62 miles) radius and sometimes further, such as a Belgian pallet manufacturer. When Jean-Michel and Roland bought the MultiHead in 2004 their objective was to increase production 30%. Better yet they have found if they French Village Sawmill Bucks Closure Trend with Wood-Mizer Equipment Above: Roland Roger and his assistant square up logs on the LT70. Their logs, including poplar and pine, come from around the Therache region and even from Belgium as they are close to the border. It seems to provide an unusually fast and economical way to add value to our wood through resawing. It can saw butt-to-butt up to 30 metres/ minute and is ideal for sawing cants into any dimension and manufacturing our pallet boards, explains Jean-Michel. Produit Forestier is among about 1,700 small sawmills that operate in France. Of those, 80% are small, mostly family owned enterprises. Those most vulnerable to closure are the ones turning out less than 1,500m3 (635,664 BF) of sawn timber per year. The average amount of timber logged in French forests is almost 40 million cubic metres p.a. (nearly 17 billion BF) since 1980 and yearly sawn goods output is 2.1 million m3 (nearly 900 million BF) of hardwoods and 7.7 million m3 (3.3 billion) softwoods*. Today, big sawmills (processing over 50,000 million m3 (21.2 billion BF)) represent 15% of the number of sawmills and deliver 60% of the total production of sawn timber.
