1 PROGRESS REPORT ON PADANG KOTA DAMANSARA COMMUNITY-BASED TREE PLANTING EVENT [3-MONTH POST PLANTING] prepared for CANON MARKETING (MALAYSIA) SDN BHD MAJLIS BANDARAYA PETALING JAYA (MBPJ) DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY, SELANGOR Prepared by Global Environment Centre Canon Marketing Malaysia 1
2 Background In partnership with Global Environment Centre (GEC), Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya; the Department of Forestry, Selangor; Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., guided by its Kyosei philosophy, launched its Canon Goes Green campaign which culminated in a tree planting event at Padang Kota Damansara on 19 th October A total of approximately 2700 seedlings of indigenous tree species were planted in collaboration with the public and local community members in Padang Kota Damansara. This report shall provide an update on the post-planting situation of the seedlings in particular, and of the general situation at Padang Kota Damansara approximately three months after the planting event. Padang Kota Damansara (PKD) The tree-planting event was undertaken at Padang Kota Damansara (hereinafter referred to as the PKD), a community park which covers a total area of approximately 18 acres comprising 10 acres of forested area with the remaining 8 acres of open field. PKD has been which has been gazetted as a public park under the management of the MBPJ, and is the process of being gazetted as a Botanical Area. A green-lung in the heart of the vast developing area of Kota Damansara, the PKD was a fragment of the Sg. Buloh Forest Reserve, the first ever forest reserve established in the State. Having been part of the Forest Reserve, the existing trees in the forest are in good condition. The treeplanting was undertaken in 14 demarcated zones within the forest area and at its peripheral, as shown in Figure 1. Apart from its strategic location as a green-lung in a metropolitan area, the selection of PKD for the tree-planting was also due to its high potential for further enrichment of its flora and fauna. Currently being the habitat of a number of flora including Jelutong, Petai, Pecah-Kaca, and Epil-Epil and fauna such as long-tailed macaw and squirrels, the introduction of more tree species is expected to further support the evolvement of the biodiversity of the forest. Global Environment Centre Canon Marketing Malaysia 2
3 Tree Planting Event The tree planting event was undertaken on 19 th October 2008 involving approximately 700 participants who consisted of employees of Canon (M) Sdn. Bhd., staffs of MBPJ, surrounding local communities as well as the general public who were informed about the event from the extensive promotion undertaken throughout the Canon Goes Green campaign period. The event was officiated by YB. Elizabeth Wong, the Selangor State Exco for Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment, and was graced with the presence of YB. Tuan Dr. Nasir Bin Hashim the ADUN for Kota Damansara; Tuan Dr. Yunus Zakaria, the Director of Department of Forestry, Selangor State; Tuan Hj. Ahmat Mohayeen Bin Hj. Said, the Deputy Secretary of MBPJ; as well as many representatives from a few agencies. The approximately 2700 seedlings planted were selected from two types of species - dipterocarp and indigenous fruit trees, and are of shade and sun tolerance depending on the locations of them being planted, with the former planted in the forest area and the latter at the edges. The selection of the planting zones had also been considered from the aspect of continuity whereupon isolated areas such as the island hill (planting zone no.1) to be linked to the rest of the forest area, as well as the need to revive certain pockets within the forest area (planting zones no. 10, 13 and 14) which have started to degrade due to indiscriminate dumping of construction wastes. The types and number of seedlings planted according to the zones and their current status are presented in Table 1 below: In conjunction with the planting event, scheduled maintenance activities were planned for the seedlings as follows: 1. 2 weeks post-planting event 2. 3 months post-planting event 3. 6 months post-planting event In addition, immediately after the planting, i.e. the following day on 20 th October 2008, immediate inspection by the staffs of the Department of Forestry was undertaken to ensure the seedlings were planted properly, and to remove the polybags used to contain the seedlings before the planting. 13 Seedlings at Zone 14 The mortality rate of the seedlings is about 5 per cent the perished ones were those planted on the slopes fringing the pond and the stream at the peripheral of the forest. Those planted nearby the pond have been adversely affected by the sports complex development which as verified with the MBPJ, shall include the improvement and beautification of pond, whilst those along the stream have been mowed by the maintenance contractor workers during their maintenance work. What was left of the approximately seedlings planted at these zones are approximately 50 seedlings. That said, we still maintain the targetted number seedlings of 2,500 since the total number planted on was approximately 2,700. In addition, as advised by the Landscape Department of MBPJ, the replanting of the perished seedlings would be most appropriately done around the middle of this year when the sports complex development has completed.
