From the Southeast to the Northwest, loggers are feeling the crunch of rising fuel costs, which have increased as much as 60 percent in the last two years. With fuel prices eating away at your profit margins, it s not enough to have forestry equipment that is highly productive. To survive, you need machines that are also extremely fuel efficient. Assuming the logger burns 240 gallons in a 9-hour day with diesel at $3 a gallon, it will cost him approximately $700 in fuel per day. Miser How you can improve fuel efficiency Selecting fuel-effi cient forestry equipment is an important fi rst step toward reducing fuel costs. But to haul the most timber on the least amount of fuel, you need to abide by a few rules of the road. Here are a few suggestions: Turn off the machine. The goal is to not only maximize productivity, but to reduce fuel consumption and daily operating costs as well, so you re maximizing profi ts. It starts stashing money away its first day on the job.
