(see the attached aerial photo for the exact location) Total acres: 67.2 (approximately) Owner s long range goals: You have multiple goals for your woodlands. The primary interest is in maintaining and enhancing the woodland s recreational values for family, friends and future generations. Periodic income from wood products is also a goal as long as harvesting is done sustainably. General description of the area: The property is bisected by Miner s Creek. The City of Guttenberg is just over the hill to the East. The woodlands have seen various levels of pasturing over the years. The woodlands on the east side of the road probably were last pastured 10 to 20 years. The woodlands on the west side of the creek were probably pastured until just recently. There is a old stone fence along parts of the east boundary that is quite unique. The soil types throughout the property are silt-loam. They include Dorchester, Caneek, Volney, Fayette, Dubuque and Nordness soil types. All of these soil types have the potential for producing high quality mixed hardwood timber. The property has been divided into a number of stands. See the attached aerial photo for the location of the stands. The following sections describes them in detail. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL STANDS See the attached aerial photo for the locations of each stand. Unless otherwise stated, the species in the stand descriptions below are listed in order of relative abundance within the stand. Stand 1: (9.1 acres) o General Description & Stand History: Crop fields. o Current Vegetation/Stocking Information: All were in soybeans in o Soil Productivity: All of the stands consist of silt-loam soils. The lower fields might be temporarily flooded, but probably not very often. o Objectives/Future Conditions: Continue with production of annual crops. o Treatment: Row crop production will continue in the two lower parcels for the time being. The third upper parcel will be in row crops temporarily. The plan is to eventually convert it to producing grapes. Stand 2: (21.4 acres) o o o o o General Description & Stand History: This is a stand of mixed hardwoods and was recently pastured. It has also been selectively harvested in the past. The better quality trees were taken and the lower quality trees were left behind. This process is called high-grading. Today, most of the larger trees have various quality issues. Current Vegetation/Stocking Information: The overstory is predominantly white oak, red oak, bur oak, shagbark hickory, bitternut hickory, ironwood, white elm, red elm, basswood and maple. There are also scattered black walnut, black cherry, aspen, ash, black locust and hackberry. There is a nice quantity of pole-sized trees further down the slope. Of these poles, there are some nice red oak, black walnut, hard maple, black cherry and basswood. The understory contains a lot of brambles including prickly ash, raspberries, gooseberries and multi-flora rose. It also contains a fair amount of seedling and sapling hard maple, basswood, ironwood, ash, cherry and elm. Soil Productivity: The soil is mostly Nordness silt loam with plenty of exposed bedrock in places. The south facing exposure would help explain the abundance of white oak and bur oak. Often, south exposures tend to be dry and less productive. However, many of the trees in this stand appear to be growing quite well. Objectives/Future Conditions: Exclude the livestock and manage the woodlands for the production of high quality mixed hardwood timber and wildlife habitat. Treatment: The first step is to decide what to do with the many mature overstory trees. Most show signs of defects. If timber production is the primary concern, then it would be best to harvest most of these trees. If wildlife habitat is the primary concern, then leave many of these trees for their mast production, dens, roosts and cover. I could mark these trees for you based on your goals. The next step would be to weed out the undesirable trees such as the elm, ironwood and bitternut hickory. Fell or girdle the weed trees and treat the fresh cut stumps with Tordon RTU to prevent them from stump sprouting. Finally, select and release crop trees from canopy competition. Select 50 to 75 crop trees per acre. Release the crop trees on four sides whenever possible. The reference section of this plan contains further discussions on TSI techniques.

Bidders must satisfy themselves through examination as to the quantity and quality being offered. The harvest trees must be directionally felled to avoid damaging unmarked trees. The ground must be firm or frozen during all times of the harvest operation. The buyer must be bonded with the State of Iowa for buying timber. The buyer is responsible for maintaining sufficient liability coverage on all individuals involved in the harvest operation. The buyer must provide proof of liability insurance at the seller s request. The successful bidder must execute a timber sale contract with the seller within 10 days of notice of award. The seller reserves the right to reject any or all bids. The buyer has until March 1 st, 2016 for harvest and removal of the trees. The seller requires a down payment of 25% of the bid at the time of contract signing. The remainder of the bid price must be paid in-full prior to the start of any harvesting, or no later than January 31 st, Submit your bid on the Bid Proposal form provided. 19 Grade and Yield Establish grading and scaling rules ahead of time. However, the buyer does the grading and scaling. Encourages high-grading unless you have the trees marked to your objectives. Good for small sales. Good system if the quality of the trees is suspicious. You take the risks. Good if pulpwood is your market

20 Always have a written contract. Avoid small sales if possible. (Remember, there are fixed costs associated with every sale). Package together an attractive sale, but don t high-grade.

23 Layout the skid trails, landings and crossing. Adhere to your State s BMPs. Will you need access through the neighbors property? Spend time on-site during the harvest operation. Be firm with the logging crew. Be nice!
