3 I) What is Government? Government is the system that sets up and enforces a society s laws. These laws are written in the country s constitution.
4 II) Government A nation or state is a region that shares a government. Unless a country is in a state of chaos or anarchy, it is most likely run by a government.
5 III) Government Types The government are: 1) Dictatorship/Oligarchy 2) Absolute Monarchy/Constitutional Monarchy 3) Democracy/Republic 4) Totalitarian
6 IV) Dictatorship A dictatorship is a type of government where only one person rules with no elections. The ruler has total control and is often tyrannical in his/her rule. The people under this government do not have much freedom.

10 V) Oligarchy This government is run by a small group of people. The ruling party controls the country. Similar to a dictatorship, the people have little freedom.
11 Question 6) Compare and contrast a dictatorship and an oligarchy. Compare= How two things are alike Contrast= How two things are different
12 VI) Monarchy Ruled by one head of state (called a king, emperor, or pharaoh), who usually reigns for life, and then passes down this reign to his/her offspring (children). Rulers often say their power comes from a god.
13 VI) Monarchies continued. Two types: Absolute and Constitutional Monarchies An absolute monarchy is one in which the government is completely controlled by the leader. A constitutional monarchy is one in which the leader (usually a king) has very limited powers, and which is supported by representatives in a parliament, who are voted upon by the people.

16 VII) Democracy Two types: Representative and Direct Representative Democracy: People elect representatives who hold the decision making power. Government is limited in their power by a constitution. The constitution is a set of laws. Often led by an elected president.

19 VII) Democracy continued Direct Democracy All citizens have equal power in decision making. All citizens have the right to vote on every single issue. All citizens have the right to debate and discuss issues. The government is controlled by everyone equally.
