4 Regional Response on Marine Litter: The Mediterranean case The first ever legally-binding Regional Plan on Marine Litter Management in the Mediterranean (since 2013); Implementation Guidelines e.g. Fishing-for-litter; Baseline Values and Environmental Reduction Targets; A Regional Assessment Report on Marine Litter; Regional Cooperation Platform; Regional Action Plan on Sustainable and Consumption and Production (SCP) (since 2016); Basin-wide Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme of the Mediterranean Sea and Coast and related Assessment Criteria (IMAP); Mediterranean Platform and Node on Marine Litter; Financial and Technical support to pilot actions at national level Southern Mediterranean and Adriatic countries ( EU and Italy funded)
5 EU Plastic Strategy and MAP Regional Plan on Marine Litter: a Common Vision Reduce single-use plastic items through the introduction of fiscal and economic instruments; Design products with long durability for reuse, recycling and materials reduction in weight and toxicity; Inform the public about the adverse effects of single-use plastic products in the marine and coastal environment and its biota; Strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility by making the producers, manufacturer brand owners responsible for the entire lifecycle of the product, collection, transport and treatment. Reduce fishing gear ending up as marine litter and its adverse effect on marine biota; Coordination and integration of measures (Regional to National); Monitoring the implementation of measures and reporting; The newly released Single-Use Plastics: A Roadmap for Sustainability will also inspire the work of the UN Environment/MAP. 5
