3 6. Project manager Name: Buddha Bajracharya Title: Project assistant, ENPHO and Network Coordinator, Paschim Paaila Phone: Fax: Name of the project or activity: Construction of Bio-sand filter, child friendly Hand washing station & training on making homemade sanitary pad and menstrual hygiene management. 8. Description of the water issues/ objectives of your projects or activities: Baluwa Secondary School is situated at Baluwapati Village Development Committee (VDC), Ward no- 4, of Kavrepalanchowk District which is about 40 km from Kathmandu, Nepal. Even though Baluwapati VDC is in close proximity to capital city it has still poor situation of safe water and sanitation. The project area of the project is Baluwa secondary school of Baluwa VDC -4. The field observation with sample study of drinking water of existing water source tested in Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) Laboratory showed that there were Too numerous to count (TNTC) Total Coliform (More than 200 cfu/100ml) and 47 CFU/100ml E.Coli which exceed the standard of National Drinking Water Quality Standard (NDWQS). Girl students has to face serious problems during menstruation due to lack of proper menstrual hygiene management resulting high absenteeism among the girl students. Due to poor drinking water quality there was prevalence of high cases of water borne diseases among the school students. Likewise there was no child friendly hand washing station in the school. The main objective of the project was to improve health of school students and to decrease absenteeism of the girl students. Following are the specific objectives: To provide improved access to safe drinking water by construction of biosand filter; To promote hygiene behavior of school students particularly among girl students and to address hygiene and sanitation problems during menstruation; To sensitize adjacent community people on WASH by engaging school students. 9. Description of your activities with the JWF Fund: To meet the project objectives, following key activities were performed: Construction of biosand filter: Biosand filter is well proven drinking water treatment device to remove harmful pathogens, turbidity, iron and bad odour from drinking water. This household level water treatment technology was developed by Dr. David Manz from University of Calgary, Canada. In the past few years, ENPHO has adopted and modified this technology to treat large volume of water in community and school. In this project biosand filter (capacity of 750 liter) with 1000 L collection tank and 1000 L storage tank has been installed which has a design flow rate of about 200 L/hr. The raw water is first collected into the collection tank, then with the specific flow rate the water

4 is run onto the biosand filter (750 L tank). Finally the treated water is collected into the 1000 L storage tank with four taps attached. Since the filter requires high quality of materials including filter media (fine sand and gravel), ENPHO contacted the trained local entrepreneur to construct and install the filter. All the filter materials, media, tanks including pipe fittings were bought from local market at Kathmandu and transported to the site. The construction of platform to place the filter and the drainage was school contribution. Construction of child-friendly handwashing station: A child-friendly handwashing station was constructed nearby biosand filter. The project contributed four taps, pipefittings and skilled labor charges whereas the construction materials were contributed by the school. Three tiles with messages on hygiene and one soap box were placed on the wall of handwashing station. Trainings and orientation: Several trainings and orientation were conducted on WASH targeting to school students and teachers. A one day orientation programme on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) was conducted for 55 adolescent girls from grades 8 and 9 and three school staff. This orientation mainly focused on importance of MHM, simple ways to address complications during menstrual period, problems suffered by the young girls mainly due to lack of hygienic toilets in the school during the period, demonstration of homemade sanitary pad. After the orientation, Menstrual Hygiene Care Team (MHCT) comprising of 8 students was established as a team to help girls having complications and problems during the menstrual period. A half-day training on preparation of homemade sanitary pad was conducted to 55 girl students from grade 8 & 9. The training comprised of demonstration and hands-on practical sessions. The participants were very delighted to make their own simple homemade sanitary pads. These trained participants also committed to orient additional 100 girls at school and community. Similarly, one-day training on school WASH was provided to more than 300 school students. During this training, the participants were provided with knowledge on safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene practices. In addition, the students understood the importance of using simple point of use (POU) drinking water treatment options at the household level. A school WASH circle comprising of 7 trained students was established mainly to ensure proper O&M of biosand filter under the close supervision of school teachers. This WASH circle will also promote key messages on WASH to the local community. A half-day Biosand Filter O&M training was organized to the care taker and school teachers with a main objective to provide technical skills and knowledge on proper operation and maintenance of the filter. The trainer demonstrated main operation and maintenance requirements, showed checklist for proper O&M and exhibited ways to solve major O&M problems. Hand-over programme: At the end of the project, a hand-over programme was organized at the premise of the school. During the event, the VDC secretary was invited as chief guest and he applauded and thanked the initiative made by ENPHO and paschim paaila to promote WASH in school and surrounding communities. Similarly, the president of school management committee expressed his sincere gratitude for providing such support and showed his commitment to sustain the filtration system, handwashing station and other WASH activities. On behalf of ENPHO and paschim paaila, Buddha Bajracharya requested everyone to work together for sustaining WASH facilities and activities.

5 10. Involved stakeholders: The stakeholders involved were Baluwa Village Development committee, Baluwa School management committee, School Administration, Environment and Public Health organization (ENPHO), Paschim Paaila. 11. Methodology of your projects or activities: First of all several consultative meetings were organized with school management committee to describe project objectives and activities. This has facilitated in rapport building with school teachers and management committee. The project provided technical support, plastic tanks, filter media, pipe fittings and skilled labor for the construction of biosand filter. The school provided construction materials such as bricks, cement, and sand for the construction of platform for placing the filter. WASH awareness was generated through several trainings and orientation programme to school students, teachers and staff. 12. The number of direct beneficiaries of your projects or activities: Total 471 school students out of which 223 (47%) are girl students and 248 (53%) are boy students along with 13 staff members and 200 community people were the direct beneficiaries of the project. 13. Achieved outcomes of your projects or activities: The 750 liters Bio-sand filter installed with 4 taps fittings has benefited 471 students, 13 staff members along with around 200 community people who are now drinking safe water purified from Bio-sand filter. Altogether 55 girls from class 8 and 9 directly benefited from the home made sanitary pad preparation training likewise more than 100 girls were oriented on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM). More than 300 students were directly benefited with orientation on proper Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. According to the school administration there is already some decrease in the absenteeism of girl students. The construction of child friendly hand washing station with 4 taps fittings has directly benefited 471 students, 13 staff members. 14. Pictures and questionnaires (at least 5 in the report. Conclusion, such as lessons learned, remaining issues for future activities. Overall the project is successful in achieving the project objectives. The school participation and contribution during the project period was very impressive. The combination of software activities such as WASH awareness, trainings and orientation and hardware components such as construction of biosand filter, handwashing platform is very effective in creating WASH awareness and raising ownership towards the project activities. The immediate conversation with school management showed increase in school attendants among the girl students mainly due to increased awareness on MHM. However, the long term impact of the project should yet to be assessed which can be done through regular monitoring and communication with school management committee. The project has successfully demonstrated implementation of WASH activities at school level and such initiatives can be replicated in other schools where WASH is very critical. 16. Table of actual expenditures of your project/ activity with the JWF Fund. *Please note that no additional grants will be paid in case of fund shortage.
