REPORTING WHAT MATTERS ISCN - GRI report Lessons learned process of reporting ETH Zurich - Campus Sustainability - ISCN Gothenburg 13
ISCN-GULF Sustainable Campus Charter ETH Zurich endorsed the ISCN-GULF-Charter at World Economic Forum in 2010: «sustainability is an essential issue for research, education, knowledge transfer, and campus infrastructure». commitment: transparent and measurable goal setting public reporting of achievements goal: reduce sustainability impacts of buildings campus-wide planning and target setting integration of research, teaching, facilities, and outreach activities 14
Sustainability Report based on GRI-standard increasing transparency to all stakeholders including all aspects of sustainability creating internal and external awareness setting a precedent within GULF being a pioneer among universities Download: 15
Lessons learned First experiences with the new ETH Zurich sustainability report and the underlying process revealed positive results. The systematic process to compile GRI-relevant data led to increased internal awareness of the importance of sustainability. The integration of social issues launched important and interesting discussions on what to consider as relevant for sustainability within an academic environment. 16
Lessons learned The results show that the analysis of the environmental performance was as important as gender issues, legal aspects, or the integration of sustainability in the overall strategic planning process. The decision of the Executive Board of ETH Zurich to follow the GRI guidelines highlights the commitment to making the Ivory Tower more transparent to all partners in society and industry. 17
