2 Like it s sister university, the ETH of Zurich, the EPFL is based on three objectives : education, research and the transfer of technology all at the highest international level. Since its foundation in 1853, EPFL developed into an international institute with over one hundred different nationalities on the campus. With it s innovative organisation, EPFL encourages interdisciplinary research and promotes partnerships with other companies and institutes. Over 250 laboratories and research groups situated on the campus contribute to EPFL s status as one of the most innovative and productive universities in the scientific field of Europe. The research performed in our Section of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is as innovative as it is varied, ranging from the areas of chemical industry, biotechnology and biochemistry to the protection of the environment. In fact, chemistry is currently a focal point of natural and environmental sciences because of this, it is important to educate the engineers of the future to be creative and competent at the same time. 3 1 2 THE ASSOCIATION BARAMINE 2011 Our association Baramine 2011, a branch of the association of chemical students (AdEC) intends to represent the section with an educational trip abroad, having the purpose of expanding our horizons and discovering a new culture.

4 BEIJING, A CITY TO DISCOVER Scientific innovations are achieved all over the world with Switzerland being a valuable focal point. We wanted our destination to have a very different culture and approach to academia. Having considered Jordan, India and China as possible destinations, we decided that Beijing would provide us with the best insight. The rapid development of China, it s production and mass exportations, all combine to make it the second largest economic power in the world. Various fields such as renewable energy and agriculture are at the center of the chemical activity in the country. Numerous companies that are growing fast and are benefitting from a rapidly increasing international reputation offer many opportunities to the future graduates of our section. Beijing as the capital of China is one of the most important cities in the world. It is culturally, economically and scientifically prosperous, offering us a great resource for our education.

5 TRIP AND BUDGET The trip is scheduled from the 5th to the 12th of February during our semester break. In this week we intend to visit several well-known cultural sights like the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall and the Tombs of the Ming Dynasty. In additition to that, two companies and universities of the chemical sector will be visited in order to exchange each others knowledge and skills. 6 HOW TO SPONSOR US? We are currently looking for sponsors which would contribute financially to the realization of this trip. The total sum of the sponsoring is 22'000 swiss francs. Every size of contribution is welcome. Your commitment can be recognized in various ways : Publishing the logo of your company on the trip report which will be distributed to the students, professors and other members of the faculty after our return, as well as on the internet page of the association of chemical students (AdEC) : adec.epfl.ch Distribution of flyers and/or promotional material (according to your wishes) about your company on the campus of the EPFL and the UNIL Display of the symbol of your company on clothes or accessories during the trip.
