Sustainability Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. United Nations Bruntland Commission Report, 1987 Why Plan for Sustainability? Legislation and regulations driving changes in how institutions operate CCC Board of Governors Energy and Sustainability Policy CCCs are the natural incubator for educating students for the Green Economy Decentralized structure and disparate resources and expertise at the CCCs make comprehensive planning difficult The Sustainability Template has been developed as a resource to all CCC Districts meet these challenges! 3
Sustainability Template What is it? A collaboration between the CCC Chancellor s Office, Citrus College and Newcomb Anderson McCormick, funded by a California Energy Commission grant Provides a roadmap and toolkit to help guide the California Community Colleges to a more Sustainable future Create a Sustainability Template that is designed with enough flexibility to be utilized at Community Colleges throughout the state Address energy, transportation, solid waste/recycling, water issues, green purchasing, green curriculum, and provide recommendations for Climate Action Planning. Sustainability Template: Three Parts Sustainability Planning Guidebook Describes the start to finish implementation process Includes a menu of sustainability projects Identifies resources available Implementation Planning Checklist Used to select and track Sustainability Projects Matches the projects described in the Sustainability Guidebook Sustainability Action Plan Document Template Used to create the customized Campus Sustainability Plan Contains template language and fill-inthe-blanks 4
Sustainability Plan Guidebook Describes the Planning Process and More Purpose and Executive Summary How to Use this Template Tutorial Policy and Regulatory Drivers District Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes The Economics of Sustainability Implementation Programs and Projects Create an Action Plan Measure and Report Performance Best Practices Case Studies Tools and Resources (technical and funding) Sustainability Plan Guidebook Sustainability Projects Menu Management and Organizational Structure Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Efficient Design and Operation of Campus Facilities Transportation and Commuting Alternatives Water, Wastewater, and Sustainable Landscaping Waste Reduction, Re-use, Recycling, and Composting Green Purchasing Opportunities for Green Curriculum Development A recommended framework, tools, and approach for Climate Action Plans 5
Sustainability Plan Guidebook Best Practice Case Studies Examples from other Community Colleges and Higher Education Institutions in California to serve as models and inspiration Sustainability Plan Guidebook Resources for Implementation Technical & programmatic resources Funding resources Specific to CCCs 6
Sustainability Plan Guidebook The Process Commitment from Campus Administration Establish a Campus Sustainability Committee Define Goals, Criteria, and Timelines Select and Prioritize Implementation Programs Create and Execute Action Plans Measure and Report Performance Implementation Planning Checklist Used with the Guide Book to help select and manage different sustainability projects Macro-enabled MS Excel Spreadsheet to create and track Action Plans 7
Sustainability Plan Document Template Used to help campuses easily create their own Sustainability Plan Includes all critical elements Reduces time spent writing and reporting Fully customizable MS Word file containing Plan elements, organization, formatting, and instructions to assist in creating campus-specific plans Citrus Community College District 2012 CCC Board of Governors Energy and Sustainability Award Winner! District Leadership Citrus College Sustainability Template 8
Sustainability Plan Implementation Fred Diamond Director of Facilities & Construction Citrus Community College Our Goals Today Learn what it takes to undertake a successful Sustainability Plan Learn what is involved in implementing a successful Sustainability Plan Understand the challenges involved Identify your stakeholders for success Realize that some items require control Become a successful coach 9
Establish a Sustainability Committee Collaborative campus leaders Faculty and staff Students and administration Local utility professionals Chancellor s Office Industry experts and extended community Establish a Chairperson The committee provides recommendations, initiates communication and deploys implementation direction Vision Statement Once the Sustainability Committee is established Develop your vision for the plan Formal Vision Statement This is where you solidify your goals and commitment to environmental protection, economic / fiscal issues and social equity RESPONSIBILITY 10
Goals, Objectives & Desired Outcomes After establishment of the Vision Define your goals and objectives What are your priorities? What are your objectives? What is your timeline? Brainstorm with your committee members and gain insight from the Template Hint Look at areas where the largest potential ti for improvement resides Set specific criteria for success You must have a benchmark Don t set the bar too high or too low Perform an assessment of existing or current sustainability efforts You must have support from administration 11
Consider Economics What is the cost and the basic ROI? Do you have funding available? What are the lifecycle costs and benefits? What is the cost of doing nothing? Consider the current market conditions floor market Are there economies of scale? Utilize any available incentives Influential Programs Green curriculum development staff DEEP development students Behavior modification Simple exercises in habits foster change Remind-o-grams notes or memos Positive reinforcement awards Campus outreach Clubs and community Storyboards and marketing 12
Create the Action Plan The vision and goals now become the deliverable projects Prioritize the projects that best fit your campus Use the MS Excel document from the Sustainability Template Plug n Play Try to have fun with it and get the committee involved in active listening and participation Measurement and Reporting You must have a benchmark or baseline to measure against Track your projects with measureable outcomes Gather and tabulate the data Compare the data against the baseline Communicate the results to your campus community in accordance with your plan Annual report to the Board of Trustees 13
