2 1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION TO BIOLOGICAL TOILETS: The primary function of the biological toilets is to completely eliminate open defecation. The biological toilet consists of a purpose built multi chambered bio digester tank in which the wastes are stored. The movement of the wastes is slowed down as the wastes flows from one chamber to another by a special process in the Bio digester tank so that the multi strain bio media present in the tank can digest the wastes and convert them fully into non toxic neutral water. This resultant water then passes on to the Disinfection Chamber where it is completely disinfected before it passes out. The Biological toilets come in Portable as well as Stationary models, so it can easily be used in construction sites and open spaces. The Biological Toilets eliminate septic tanks, sewage lines and need for any periodic sludge removal. Toilet system decomposes the waste completely and converts it into water by the bacterial digestion within 24 hours. The toilet system is simple to operate and safe for users. 2. SALIENT FEATURES OF THE BIOLOGICAL TOILETS: The Biological toilets digest the wastes in the Bio Digester Tank and convert it to neutral water. The Bio Digester tank is built directly below the toilet floor. So, the floor area required for construction of a biological toilet is less than the floor area required for a conventional septic tank toilet system of the same capacity. This type of toilet is best suited for slums & village schools as there is shortage of space. The Biological toilet does not need a large Septic tank system or associated sewage lines, so it is cheaper to construct than a proper conventional toilet. The Biological toilets require very less water (2 liters) per defecation. So, water is conserved. The Biological toilet system is of permanent nature. No periodic suction or waste handling is required as the wastes are completely digested into water and gas. The Biological toilets prevent human waste handling or discharge of untreated wastes into the environment. So, diseases and epidemics caused by dumping of raw wastes into the environment are prevented. Biological toilets can be provided for women/girls with sanitary napkin disposal facilities. So, girls may use the toilets at all times. The Biological toilets preserve the environment and water bodies, as they prevent environmental pollution. The Biological Toilet provides employment to the local people as local people are trained in maintenance of the bio toilets.

4 ADVANTAGES OF BIOLOGICAL TOILETS OVER SEPTIC TANKS: S No Biological Toilet System The wastes from the toilet are digested by the bio media resulting in neutral water. A small tank is required as the wastes are digested and converted fully into water. Less floor space required as the Bio digester tank is small in size. The Bio digester tank can be placed on the ground, so no digging or foundation required, so installation is fast. Here the discharge is fully digested non toxic, neutral water, so the environment is not polluted. This system requires less maintenance and does not require periodic sludge removal as the wastes are converted into water. It is easy to relocate the Bio digester tank from one place to another as and when required. The discharge water may be used for irrigation in fields. Septic Tank System The wastes in the septic tank are not digested and it seeps into the ground. A very large septic tank is required, nearly 10 times the volume of the Bio digester tank. Large floor area required almost twice that of the Bio digester tank. Septic tank requires excavation, cementing, curing, partitioning, etc. So, it is a labour intensive and time consuming process and installation is slow. Here the untreated wastes seep into the ground, which may result in ground water contamination leading to an epidemic. This system requires periodic sludge removal which may lead to waste spillage on the ground resulting in unhygienic conditions and diseases. In is not possible to shift the septic tank from one place to another, the old tank has to be destroyed and a new septic tank has to be built. The discharge cannot be used for irrigation in fields as it contains pathogenic bacteria.
