BIOCONVERSION MEASURES FOR COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS RAMBOLL ENERGY POWER PROJECT DIRECTOR PREBEN MESSERSCHMIDT 1
OVERVIEW - Brief introduction of Ramboll - Bioconversion challenges - Bioconversion measures - Summary 2
RAMBOLL IN BRIEF Engineering consultancy Founded 1945 in Denmark Owned by Ramboll Foundation and therefor truly independent 12,500 experts Over 300 offices in 35 countries Revenue of EUR >1.1 billion (2014) Services across the markets: - Buildings - Transport - Environment & Health - Water - Energy - Oil & Gas - Management Consulting 3
GLOBAL PRESENCE Significant presence in the Nordics, North America, the UK, Continental Europe, Middle East, Asia, Australia and South America 4
RAMBOLL ENERGY COMPETENCE AREAS Energy systems Offshore wind Energy f. Waste Waste-to-energy Thermal power District heating and cooling Thermal powers 220 staff strong division have more than three decades of experience with biomass firing, and two decades of experience in conversion of coal fired power station units to biomass firing 5
OVERVIEW - Brief introduction of Ramboll - Bioconversion challenges - Bioconversion measures - Summary 6
BACKGROUND FOR BIOCONVERSION: WHY SUBSTITUTE COAL WITH BIOMASS IN POWER Biomass can deliver large CO2 savings GENERATION? Replacing (pulverized) coal with biomass is a cost effective way of bioconversion of major power plants. Ramboll is currently involved in conversion of more than 2,200 MW 7
The challenge Most Thermal power plants are PF fired Wood Pellets needs in most cases to be imported How to get the fuel to the station? But That s another presentation! 8
The solution.it`s so simple! 1. Import wood pellets 2. Transport them to the station 3. Grind them in the existing mills 4. Burn them in the boiler 9
But the problems are.. THE D... DUST GETS EVERYWHERE!. AND MAY CATCH FIRE OR EXPLODE 10
with a result like..this. The massive fire at the Ontploffing Biomassacentrale Rijksweg Noord in Sittard 10 Mei 2007 during handling and storage. 11
or like..this..when being processed..w/o the appropriate safety measures designed-in 12
OVERVIEW - Brief introduction of Ramboll - Bioconversion challenges - Bioconversion measures, - Summary 13
BIOCONVERSION ADAPTATION Adaptations required throughout the Power station processes: - Wood pellet storage and handling - Fuel preparation plant - Combustion - Flue Gas treatment - Ash handling - Balance of plant systems Specific wood pellet issues: - Risk management - Dust management - Fire & explosion mitigations 14
EXAMPLE OF COAL TO BIOMASS CONVERSION 2 X 500MW UNITS 15
FUEL SUPPLY RAIL UNLOADING New rail unloading bay Separation of fuel supply lines coal from biomass 16
ON SITE FUEL STORAGE Extraction of fuel from below Benefits of more smaller stores: reduced fire propagation risk increases redundancy improves efficacy of fire suppression systems 17
FUEL SUPPLY FUEL CONVEYING TO DAY BUNKERS Two parallel conveyor lines Redundancy required (due to limited day bunker capacity) 18
FUEL SUPPLY DAY BUNKER MODIFICATIONS (A PROVEN ALTERNATIVE TO NEW EXTERNAL FUEL STORES) Flexibility to cross-fill opposite units from same feed system dust free day bunkers to control dust propagation 19
MILLS CAN BE CONVERTED TO GRIND WOOD PELLETS Allowing feed of pulverised fuel from mills to multiple burners without cost of new mills 20
OTHER ASSOCIATED MODIFICATION AREAS: DUST MANAGEMENT Dust extraction in all transfer points 21
OTHER ASSOCIATED MODIFICATION AREAS: DUST MANAGEMENT BY INTELLIGENT DESIGN 22
OTHER ASSOCIATED MODIFICATION AREAS Primary air system Flue gas treatment FGD lower sulphur fuel ESP IED ELVs Waste water plant Bottom ash system High UBC issues with wet systems Specific WP fly ash storage Fire detection & control Detection and monitoring Deluge system Nitrogen injection systems Explosion control Detection Suppression Controlled release systems 23
OVERVIEW - Brief introduction of Ramboll - Introduction to Bioconversion - Bioconversion measures - Summary 24
SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS Large scale Bioconversion is viable - Large investment costs, but good performance achievable Significant carbon savings available Careful consideration of fuel risks required to develop safe design Dust management - fire and explosion -> Intelligent design required! Large scale conversions are being conducted, including in: United Kingdom, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria But.Consistent policy support is required to enable FID 25
