5 Conditioning The sludge and nutrients are rinsed out of the raw manure using the water from the facilities. 10 1. Dissolved Air Floatation The remaining liquid, at 4% solids, flows to the Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) unit for nutrient extraction. 10 Effluent from the Fiber Extraction Dissolved Air Flotation Unit

11 2. Polymerization Polymer is transported, shipped and stored as a powder for maximum efficiency, then fluidized on site. Polymer Hydration Unit The separated manure liquid is polymerized creating large durable flocs to remove the remaining fine particles. 11

12 3. Micronized Air Micronized air in the DAF process attach themselves to the flocculated particles and floats them. Air infused water from micro bubbles By making the bubbles very fine, they move slowly through the effluent for maximum effect. 12

14 5. Sludge: The options 14 The concentrated sludge can be used as is, transported to different sites for further processing or concentrated on site. 16 Cake produced by the Trident MD Press 7. Sludge Cake The concentrated cake can be used as is for soil amendment, or transported to different sites for further processing. Volume is significantly reduced lowering hauling costs. 16

17 8. Direct Land Application 17 Trident Granualization Mill can be used to convert the cake to a dry granule that behaves as slow release fertilizer. The maximized nutrient concentration allows for precision agriculture application. Nutrient Reduced Liquid Lo-solids and nutrient reduced liquid The remaining clarified effluent is now about 1.5% solids. 85% removal of Phosphorus, 54% of the Nitrogen and 17% of the Potassium have been concentrated in the solids. The nutrient reduced liquid can be fertigated at high annual application rates while remaining within C.N.M.P. limits. 18

19 8. Why is this important? We can not afford to drive water around. 2. Large numbers of animal units, produce LOTS of nutrients. 3. Environmental impacts are getting progressive scrutiny, and must be addressed for both legal and social license. 4. The costs of fertilizer continue to escalate well ahead of inflation curves. 5. Global supplies of phosphorus are apparently finite and dwindling, while global demand is accelerating. 6. Energy prices/values are declining, meaning biogas installations MUST find additional, alternative revenue chains. 19

20 8. What do we know for sure? EVERY installation is different (same equipment processes 30GPM at one farm, and 350GPM at another). 2. While there are ranges and automated controls, a level of management to insure consistency of influent to the systems is required. 3. Mixed feedstock digesters are VERY different than manure only digesters 4. Whatever goes in the mouth impacts everything downstream. 5. The market for separated digester solids is young, but emerging quickly. 6. Large scale investment in underway for a facility to process nutrient cake into commercial fertilizer (size matters here). 20
