Project Data Sheet Due Dilligence (Stockpile Survey) Project Stockpile Survey, Redcar Area 280 Ha Client Tata Steel UK Ltd Year 2010 As part of a due diligence assessment of Tata s Redcar works, TerraConsult were requested to survey the material stockpiles at the site. There were 142 different stockpiles of coal, coke, iron ore and other bulk materials to be surveyed over an area of 2.0 km by 1.4 km. Tata required both the volumes and the densities of the stockpiles to be surveyed in order to determine the tonnages of each of the individual stockpiles. The quantity of stocks within the bed below the stockpiles (the carpet) was also to be surveyed. This survey was required to be carried out in mid- December 2010 with the report due in mid-january Individual stockpiles varied in size with plan areas varying from less than 50 m 2 to over 19,000 m 2. There was also a requirement that there was no access onto the stockpiles. TerraConsult carried out the stockpile volumetric survey by commissioning an aerial LiDAR survey to gather data at 0.25 m centres across the site giving 52 Million data points. This was ground truthed by conventional land survey techniques. Densities of the stockpiles were determined by sampling and testing the materials on site using box density methods in accordance with appropriate British Standards. The stockpile carpet survey was carried out by excavating a series of trial pits across the site to confirm thickness with the in situ density being measured by Nuclear Density Gauge methods. During the survey period there was a significant snow fall. The aerial survey was carried out in the short window before the snow arrived. In spite of the tight deadlines and the difficult weather conditions, TerraConsult were able to complete the survey safely and on time. There was over 1.5 Million m 3 of bulk materials stockpiled on the site. Michael Young Tata Steel Steel House Redcar, Teeside TS10 5QW Telephone:
Project Data Sheet Environmental Monitoring Project Keekle Head Area 70 ha Client Endecom UK Ltd Year (ongoing) TerraConsult were commissioned by Endecom UK to carry out site investigation and environmental monitoring services at the former Keekle Head opencast coal mine near Distington, Cumbria. The work was required to support the design of a proposed landfill facility accepting low level radioactive waste. Following a comprehensive desk study, TerraConsult were responsible for designing and procuring the intrusive investigation works which involved a combination of rotary drilling (open hole and coring), cable percussive boring and trial pitting. Field testing carried out as part of the contract included detailed permeability testing (falling head, instrumented packer tests and pumping tests), soakaway and plate bearing tests. Alongside the investigation works TerraConsult were commissioned to carry out a detailed programme of environmental monitoring and testing. The principle aim of this was to establish baseline conditions at the site. TerraConsult arranged the installation of dust monitoring gauges to assess the levels and chemistry of ambient dust across the site. TerraConsult also oversaw the installation of a weather station which records site specific weather data at hourly intervals. Following the investigation works, TerraConsult carried out a detailed programme of environmental monitoring. Groundwater level measurements were taken using both conventional dip-meters and down-well data loggers, the latter providing continuous data-sets which could then be analysed against the on-site measured rainfall data. In some areas the presence of artesian conditions also required the use of bourdon pressure gauges. A sampling programme was designed covering groundwater, surface water and river sediment. The relevant test suites were designed to characterise the baseline chemistry of the site and included both routine determinands and radiological elements. Subject to planning approval, the monitoring data will be used to underpin the scheme s Environmental Safety Case. 3 Project Data Sheet Land Regeneration Project Widnes Waterfront, Widnes Area 8 Ha Client New Earth Solutions Ltd. Year 2009 The Widnes Waterfront development site is for a new waste treatment centre. The site is situated adjacent to the Mersey estuary and a landfill that has taken hazardous wastes. The site has been used for over 130 years for a series of chemical works with the last works being a pesticide factory which was demolished in the early 1990s. The initial phase of works comprised a detailed desk study together with a surface geophysical investigation. This was followed by a comprehensive intrusive site investigation. Complex ground, groundwater and chemical conditions were encountered. There are three different aquifers at the site. The two upper aquifers were influenced by the 10 m tidal range in the estuary and were both contaminated with DNAPL, LNAPL and dissolved phase products. The cocktail of contaminants included: heavy metals, sulphate, hydrocarbons, BTEX, chlorinated solvents, carbon disulphide and pesticides. Extensive numerical modelling was carried out, following the Source Pathway Receptor methodology. Initial site specific clean-up criteria were derived for the site, calculated using a Tiered approach. Subsequent Tier 3 DQRA modelling allowed less stringent clean-up criteria to be employed but remediation of both free phase and dissolved products is required. A three stage Remedial Options Appraisal was carried out to determine the technically suitable remediation methods, and assess the costs and sustainability of the various possible methods. The remedial strategy was agreed with the Environment Agency and the local council. The site is programmed to be remediated in Ted Bleszynski New Earth Solutions Ltd 35 Black Moor Road, Ebblake Industrial Estate, Verwood, Dorset, BH31 6AT Telephone:
Project Data Sheet Land Regeneration Project Aquinas College, Stockport Area 5.2 Ha Client Vinci Construction Ltd Year Aquinas College is a 5.2 Ha. development site for a new College of Further Education building. The new college building was being developed on part of the college s existing grounds most recently used as playing fields / soft landscaping. The former college building was demolished and the land landscaped as part of this redevelopment project. The site, located in Stockport, Greater Manchester lies approximately 2 km from the M60 Motorway. The majority of the site area was previously used as an informal, unrecorded tip which took a variety of industrial waste from a number of sources including mercury contaminated material likely to have originated from the local hat making industry. TerraConsult were appointed by the contractor at tender stage to re-assess the original designer s Remediation Plan and Waste Assessment. The original remediation design by others required removal of 10,000 m 3 of soil from one particular area of the site (primarily due to risks to controlled waters), of which 2,500 m 3 had been assessed to be hazardous waste. TerraConsult re-interpreted the existing data and carried out additional investigation and detailed risk assessment. Rapid onsite characterisation of metal concentrations was achieved by the use of a portable XRay Fluorescence meter (XRF). The XRF results were also confirmed by a sub set of samples also sent to an MCERTs accredited laboratory. The additional data enabled a Tier 3 controlled waters risk assessment and further human health risk assessments to be undertaken, as well as a reclassification of waste types. The re-assessment enabled the volume of material requiring removal from the site to be reduced from 10,000 m 3 to only 40 m 3 from two hotspot locations. Overall, TerraConsult s work enabled a saving to the Client of around 685,000 due to reduced waste disposal and reduced need for imported material Peter Dodd Vinci Construction Ltd Birchwood Corporate 500, Longbarn Boulevard, Warrington, WA2 0XF Tel:
Project Data Sheet Quarry Remediation & Restoration Project Delph Lane Quarry, Whiston, Merseyside Value 900,000 Client NW Land Development Ltd Year 2002/03 & Delph Lane Quarry was a 30 m deep vertical sided Triassic red sandstone quarry in Whiston, Merseyside, which remained undeveloped for years despite being in an area short of development land. Permission to backfill was difficult to obtain due to the presence of a water supply borehole adjacent to the site and the Environment Agency was concerned about potential pollution. The availability of suitable excavated spoil from a quarry in St Helens, provided a potential catalyst to restore the site at an economic cost. Following extensive geochemical testing, numerical modelling and a detailed hydrogeological risk assessment, the Agency allowed the infilling under a strict Quality Assurance regime with professional full time supervision by TerraConsult. This was provided throughout the contract and included control of the loading at source and chemical testing of the fill placed. The geotechnical aspects were as important as the potential pollution issues in respect of constructing housing over the backfilled quarry as soon as practicable. Compaction trials prior to construction, a significant testing regime during infilling, continuous settlement monitoring and attention to detail provided fill which the monitoring continues to demonstrate is performing as predicted. In 2005, the site was purchased by a national home builder, David Wilson Homes. TerraConsult also worked for David Wilson Homes carrying out a geological assessment of a Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Site (RIGS) designated rock face and design and supervision of the remediation of an area of contaminated land adjacent to the quarry. Construction of all houses on the site was completed in late Paul Edwards North West Land Development Limited Edley, Central Avenue, Eccleston Park, Prescot, Merseyside, L34 2QL
Project Data Sheet Brownfield Remediation Project Pioneer Business Park, Ellesmere Port Area 12 Ha Client Vinci Construction Ltd Year 2005 Pioneer Business Park is a 12 Ha. warehouse development site, with the one warehouse building itself occupying 6.5 Ha. The site, situated adjacent to the M53 Motorway at Ellesmere Port, was formerly a large scale hydrocarbon storage, blending and distribution facility operational between 1958 and TerraConsult were appointed to review the site history and previous investigations for the development and provide detailed recommendations for remediation. This identified significant gaps in data, including the location of large ponds at the site prior to its development as a hydrocarbon storage facility. These areas were targeted as the infilled ponds had been potentially acting as sinks for hydrocarbon contamination over the years. This proved to be the case. Laboratory and geotechnical data obtained from the Site Investigation enabled extensive numerical modelling to be carried out, following the Source Pathway Receptor methodology. Initial site specific clean-up criteria were derived for the site, calculated using a Tiered approach. A subsequent DQRA modelling allowed less stringent clean-up criteria to be employed, therefore reducing the quantity of material required to be removed from site, saving significant costs. TerraConsult also supervised the remediation which included decontamination of the areas of the former ponds by pumping and treating the hydrocarbon contaminated groundwater. A large amount of free product and hydrocarbon contaminated sludge were removed from site by tanker. TerraConsult also carried out Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) validation of the engineered earthworks over the site.
