Water Operators Partnerships A model for peer-to-peer support to strengthen operators capacity Jose Luis Martin-Bordes, Programme Officer GWOPA/UN-Habitat

What are WOPs? 2 WOPs are solidarity-based peer support partnerships that help operators develop their capacities. They are a simple but effective mode of bolstering the ability of watsan service providers to play their full role in delivering and extending quality basic services for all

GWOPA: the Concept What are WOPs? Water and sanitation operators helping one another O Peer-exchanges for capacity building: taping into operator s expertise WOPs label : ONOT F R PR FI T (Charter and Code-of-Conduct) Sustainable Inclusive Demand-driven 4 Based on confidence between peers, solidarity (S-S and N-S)

Generalized funding and implementation cycle for a WOPs programme

GWOPA: Supporting WOPs globally GWOPA is an UNSGAB initiative: a global mechanism to scale-up peer support between water operators to address capacity gaps towards the MDGs and the UNGA Res. on Human Right to Water and Sanitation Led and hosted by UN-HABITAT since 2007 upon request of former UN Secretary General A multi-stakeholder alliance of partners mainly supporting urban utilities through systematized WOPs. 5

GWOPA: the Concept Who are we? who we are GWOPA is playing coordinating role, and offering a common platform for exchange between various regional WOP platforms Advocating for WOPs and gathering support for the WOPs movement on the global level Establishing and protecting the WOPs Brand by moving beyond public vs. private discussions and focusing on the nature of the partnership (not-forprofit) rather than the nature of the partners involved 6

Global Water Operators Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA) What are Water Operators Partnerships (WOPs)? WOPs are peer support arrangements between two or more water and sanitation operators, carried out on a not-for-profit basis in the objective of strengthening operator capacity. WOPs are being promoted as a simple but effective mode of bolstering the ability of watsan service providers to play their full role in delivering and extending quality basic services for all. What is GWOPA? GWOPA is an alliance of partners working towards the common goal of making Water Operators Partnerships (WOPs) happen more often and with greater impact. GWOPA s direct goal is to promote and enable impactful WOPs. It does this by creating awareness about WOPs, producing and sharing knowledge and tools, and rallying the funds and political backing to enable effective WOPs and practice. Take Action to Address Water Challenges Water Operators Partnerships focus on addressing local water challenges in regions around the world by taking action on one or more Acton Areas such as by addressing access to water and sanitation, improving local water governance, increase public awareness and education on water issues, and/or promoting more efficient water use. Many projects focus on a variety of action areas towards the ultimate goal of providing improved water and sanitation services:
