Water Footprinting Workshop Wednesday 18 November Hotel Marivaux Brussels, Belgium
Today s programme (I) Block 1: Water footprinting Introduction John Swift, chairman Water issue Marco Mensink (CEPI) Water footprint Derk Kuiper (Water Footprint Network) Water footprint of Coca Cola Ulrike Sapiro (Coca-Cola) Water footprint of a paper mill Ola Svending (StoraEnso) BREAK
Today s programme (II) Block 2: Water Stewardship The global round table Karin Krchnak (AWS) An NGO perspective to water Sergej Moroz (WWF) Paper industry projects and ways forward Marco Mensink (CEP COCKTAIL!
Water issue Introduction Marco Mensink (CEPI)
Water is the next big issue! Climate Change Bio-diversity Natural resources Water Q: Pulp and Paper?
Many initiatives but merging WBCSD on water CEO water mandate Water disclosure project COP on water European water partners EMAS/Ecolabel on water Global water round table ISO mandate water footprint Water footprint network Legislation IPPC/Water directive
Why water on the CEPI agenda? Many developments from footprinting to stewardship We have a storyline that needs an upgrade We have more water data than we use We need to harmonise We should be ready for footprinting and water stewardship And we can benefit from a new approach!
Keeping perspective where needed isio, a Finnish food company, added a label to packages of its Eloven oat flakes to show how much water was used to make the product.
and wondering about the drivers The key drivers for the water issue have still to be decided: Image? Risk? Policy? More? Consumer demand? B2B and B2G demand?
Water footprinting The Water footprint network leads developments A scientific approach from Twente University (NL) complemented by a stakeholder approach Large companies involved CEPI is member A shift in focus from water use to the virtual water footprint and impact of water consumption
Stewardship is the next step How to manage this issue from industry and policy side: AWARNESESS: basic water data and impact focus (standardisation (ISO/ISEAL?) / virtual water footprint) RISKS: what are the corporate water risks? Policy risks? IMAGE: Water as a market issue (labelling/certification)? Competition? A hype? Needs to be carefully assessed. Water neutrality and offsetting hopefully avoided! COSTS? Policy? Taxation? STEWARDSHIP: principles, indicators, water-ems REAL WILL: real improvements and focus on measures
So presenting you today The crème de la crème on this issue! - Water Footprint network - Alliance for Water Stewardship - WWF - Large companies Coca Cola - Paper pilots StoraEnso And hoping you will learn, wonder, enjoy, feel disturbed, interested, but overall be ready for the debate (!)
The paper industry projects - and ways forward Marco Mensink (CEPI)
Who we are - a new story to tell We normally start presentations with who we are What we produce - how many people we employ Even with how many mills are under EU-ETS Our CO2 emissions - our bio-energy share But not yet the impact of our water use Or our water footprint Because we still need more than one slide to explain! I think we have done a lot, know a lot, are frontrunners in some areas, but are still starting in others.
So let me introduce us again (1) We are the EU pulp and paper industry We take water into the mills to make pulp and paper from groundwater sources, rivers, lakes, brackish water, municipal We bring the water back to the system to sewers, lakes/rivers/estuaries and the sea after treatment
And in yet another way (1) the mill We use it for cooling, electricity and steam production, processes We treat the water in primary, secondary, tertiary treatment plants We have expertise in water recycling, treatment, purification We consume, evaporate, use not return to the system
So let me introduce us again (2) We are the EU pulp and paper industry. We take water into the mills to with the wood, recovered paper, nonwood raw materials (chemicals, starch (maize, wheat, potato ) We bring the water back to the system via paper products and residues. Which brings a global perspective.
Trade flows of pulp to and from CEPI countries (2) North America: Exports to 161 Imports from 3,071 Other Europe: Exports to 541 Imports from 431 Asia: Exports to 1,236 Imports from 127 North America: Exports to 2,568 Imports from 2,048 Other Europe: Exports to 6,771 Imports from 1,496 Asia: Exports to 4,376 Imports from 681 Latin America: Exports to 29 Imports from 3,955 Rest of the World: Exports to 102 Imports from 304 Latin America: Exports to 1,401 Imports from 392 Rest of the World: Exports to 2,393 Imports from 458 North America: Exports to 64 Imports from 199 Latin America: Exports to 29 Imports from 6 Other Europe: Exports to 343 Imports from 794 Asia: Exports to 8,791 Imports from 4 Rest of the the World: Exports to 360 Imports from 5 Pulp, paper and recovered paper trade flows (2007)
Impact based the story We use water in certain areas we are located throughout Europe where each location has its own situation and water scarcity We take water in and bring water back to river basin systems; sometimes we take water from rivers and bring it to the sea, sometimes we take it from the ground and bring it to the river, etc. Water use under the Water Framework Directive Water emissions are regulated under IPPC, from temperature, to BOD/COD/AOX. For every permit mandatory tests are made into the environmental impact of the effluent on the water body We buy fibrous and non-fibrous raw material from different forest types and production processes and locations in Europe and around the globe with different water (scarcity) situations
Measure based Mills have invested greatly in the last decades in water treatment installations Companies have water reduction programmes and targets, energy and efficiency are key reasons, not water alone. A single mill has a closed water loop but cross-media effects occur and projects try to find a balance For some mills the water issue is more important than others and the measures taken reflect that We have collected relevant data intake, sources, treatment, use, effluent, receiving bodies We are now however up-scaling to a new level and calculating consumption
Some key questions and challenges How to make a very local issue into a global picture? the Google Earth approach! How to focus on impact? Which appropriate impact assessment methods to use? Forestry and water? How to focus on valuable measures instead of the hype? The first one in the chain to act To include the product use phase or not? Where all are at the start And definitions have not been clearly set And the consumer perspective is not yet clear
Overall goal and direction CEPI CEPI gives the water issue a high priority. The goal is to prepare our industry for this issue. We do not aim to prepare a full water footprint framework or LCA Homework setting the right definitions and engaging in the right discussions are still the key focus areas CEPI work starts with definition setting and profile development. Second step is expansion to lifecycle and footprinting elements. The goal is to be involved from the start! We can learn and show and improve.
ater disclosure study results FBI (03/09)
An example Old versus New Old a volume focus: we use 10m3 per tonne and have a 25% reduction target. Making us a larger water user in EU. New impact based we consume 10% of this volume (a net value) which is important in areas with little water and not important in water rich areas.
So our proposal Harmonise reporting of existing data Refine water balances with water in products Add the water scarcity dimension Focus on impacts! Develop a new storyline for the mills
In the mills and associations Water intake, by source Water effluent, by destination Split in water use And a complete balance (cooling!) + Water intake via raw materials/out via products + Water scarcity data bringing the context from public sources and water framework directive.
And further work to be done On water footprinting grey, green, blue. On impacts. On criteria setting water stewardship. Aiming to coordinated the pilot work in the 10 or so projects in our sector. With an outlook to water and forestry in a forest committee working group. Cooperating in ICFPA. Showing our performance and achievements and being engaged from the start.
