The Rotary Club of Calgary + The Rotary Club of Lombok + = cleaner water for Kebon Talo, Indonesia
Where is Lombok? What is CAWST? How did we get into a JV There? Lombok next island to Bali
The Joint Venture Background The small Lombok Rotary Club ( 25 members) wanted to help a poor kampong Kebon Talo that had no clean water and poor sanitation ergo poor community health.
The Lombok Team
Let s look at the water and sanitation conditions in the village( Kampong) that prompted Lombok Rotary to want to help
Skin Rash from Contaminated water
Cross Contamination Bath to Well Public Mandi ( Bath) Water well for Public Bath
This well was very close to the Public Bath Shallow well ( 3 meters) No cover and easy access using the common pail
Lombok Rotary Finds technical and Financial Help Using the world wide web Lombok looked for technical help to fix the water and sanitation problem at Kebon Talo Lombok Rotary also needed financial help CAWST in Calgary was the technical choice and assisted to find funding Our Bruce Fenwick is a CAWST Director The connection was made with our club
Bio-Sand Water Filters : Filter Description Diffuser Plate Protects the schmutzdecke from damage when water is poured into the filter Standing Water Layer Keeps the schmutzdecke alive during pause periods. Filter Lid Prevents contaminants from entering the filter Very Fine Sand Layer Traps organic and inorganic material at the top of the filter media Outlet Pipe Fine Sand Permits additional trapping of contaminants Conducts effluent from filter base to outside Gravel Underdrain Promotes vertical flow of water into collector pipe
The Project Plan and Proposal Bruce lead the charge to get Lombok to do the plan, budget and financial controls for presentation and approval by our funding committee. Success!. Our Club and a private donor provided $US10,000 to make the JV possible I was asked to be part of this project because of my long term association with Indonesia Bruce is the leader. He is telling me pick up the shovel and get busy
The Lombok Team was driven by The President of the Club, a wonderful Indonesian lady A Canadian Drilling Engineer A retired British water and sanitation engineer An American who owns the local newspaper The support group of at least 8 other dedicated Rotary Members
The Lombok Rotary Team
RESULTS One hundred Bio Filters were constructed tested and 97 put into homes and the school The president and her helpers got the local health nurses to visit and talk to the Lurah and his people on how to use the filters and improve sanitation. Special Wall hang-ups were printed to show the basics of How To CASWT/ROTARY T Shirts worn By Volunteers to identify with the project The filters are in place and being used
Lets Look AT SOME PICTURES The following are pictures taken in Mid February through until October The filters and related promotion to the Villagers cost less than budgeted. The left over funds about $3,000 were used To: Buy Desks for the children in primary School( they had been sitting on the cement floor) A desk, books and black board for the Teacher. Village could pay him a stipend +/- $30 per month but had no capital funds Construct a proper Latrine at the school. Just now completed We got a lot of mileage for our $10,000
