Advanced Rooftop Controllers Field Validated HVAC Energy Savings & More Track 2 HVAC and Analytics May 25, 2017 Transformative Wave 2017
RTU FACTS ROOFTOP PACKAGED UNITS
WHY CARE ABOUT AN RTU? THEY ARE EVERYWHERE It All Adds Up The Market Packaged Rooftop Units (RTUs) are the most common commercial HVAC system in the United States. 69% of cooled commercial floor space 58% of all commercial buildings (EIA 2003) Retail, theaters, churches, restaurants, banks, schools, manufacturing, distribution centers, malls, one and two-story office, fitness centers & more. The Opportunity RTUs use more energy than any other cooling technology and we save 25%-50%. Annual energy consumption exceeds 2.1 quads. (1 quad = 8 billion gallons of gasoline) RTUs operate at a low efficiency level, using far more energy than necessary. Product provides web-based control to small and medium commercial buildings that have lacked connectivity. 3
ABOUT ARC TECHNOLOGY ARC Stands for Advanced Rooftop Unit Control
WHAT QUALIFIES AS AN ARC TECHNOLOGY Not All ARC Technologies Have The Same Features MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS HIGHLY DESIRABLE FEATURES VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE Serves as the foundation, offering up to 60% or more of the savings PREDICTIVE ECONOMIZATION An advanced feature that begins economizing when it is most efficient DEMAND CONTROL VENTILATION Based on CO2 levels, it will automatically adjust to maintain proper indoor air quality STANDALONE OPERATION Typically, ARCs can operate autonomously, providing independent energy savings ADVANCED ECONOMIZATION Intelligently leverages outside air instead of return air when the conditions are right WEB CONNECTED ARCs are best deployed with web connectivity for remote control & oversight 5
DOE ARC CAMPAIGN 6
MODELED VALIDATION The experts have tested, measured, and evaluated the performance of ARC technology EXPERT: DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY S PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY (PNNL) A comprehensive study was performed in across 16 U.S. climate zones to set a baseline and measure savings across constantspeed supply fan RTUs without economizers*. Key Findings: ARC Savings: Regardless of your climate zone, ARCs produce valuable savings ARC Durability: Regardless of the climate, ARCs were robust enough to withstand their environment ARC Performance: The study confirmed that the technology does what it is supposed to do *While building codes require economizers in many U.S. climates, growing consensus among our industry is that economizers are often bypassed because they are broken or an HVAC technician has either disabled it or configured it incorrectly. 7
LET S SEE SOME PROOF ARC Technology has been tested across the United States and Canada
E SOURCE ARC VALIDATION 9
COMPLETED FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS Summarized savings from 9 completed third-party field demonstrations covering 19 buildings RESULTS: ENERGY SAVINGS RANGED FROM 29%-73% WITH A 48% MEDIAN* *Excludes the high and low outliers which are outside two standard deviations. 10
RECENT FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS Summarized savings from 5 third-party field demonstrations covering 26 buildings RESULTS: ENERGY SAVINGS RANGED FROM 29%-66% WITH A 47% MEDIAN* *Excludes the high and low outliers which are outside two standard deviations. 11
CHECK OUT OUR WHITE PAPER Advanced Rooftop-Unit Control (ARC) Retrofits: Field Demonstrations Validate Significant Energy Savings ADVANCED ROOFTOP-UNIT CONTROLS (ARC) This white paper details the extensive field demonstrations that have been completed by utilities and third-party organizations to validate the savings and outcome of ARC retrofit installations across North America. Key Takeaways: Normalizing the Results: Understand how the technology performs across multiple climate zones Field Demonstrations: Review completed and pending field demonstrations across the country Realize Savings: Available utility incentives, Automated Fault Detection & Diagnostics capabilities, as well as measured and verified savings back up the value proposition of ARC technology 12
WHAT S THE COST? The PNW has led the way for the rest of the nation with prescriptive rebates for ARC technology.
ARC REBATES PACIFIC NORTHWEST Based on the significant savings from these field results, utilities have begun to provide prescriptive rebates for ARC solutions PRESCRIPTIVE REBATE FOR ARC UPGRADES The regional utilities and the BPA are among the strongest supporters in the nation for Advanced Rooftop Controller retrofits: $225/ton Rebate from Electric Utility $50/ton Rebate from PSE for Gas Savings Covers up to 70% of the Project Cost New ARC Lite rebates of up to $150/ton *Rebates may vary based on annual run hours of equipment 14
POSITIVE CONCLUSION FOR ARCs Field demonstrations prove that ARC solutions can provide significant HVAC electrical energy savings for many different building types RESULTS: WITH UTILITY INCENTIVES GROWING, ARCs TYPICALLY REALIZE A SIMPLE PAYBACK BETWEEN 1 TO 4 YEARS 15
HVAC RETROFITS ARE BUILDING BLOCKS TO EXPANDED BUILDING INTELLIGENCE AND CONTROL The energy savings from ARC technologies provide the financial fuel for additional advanced features VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE ARC TECHNOLOGY ENTERPRISE VISIBILITY FULL BAS SOLUTION The CATALYST Lite solution offers The full CATALYST drives intelligent The eiq Platform offers visibility Our portfolio of solutions enables asset simple fan savings energy savings and efficiency through real-time monitoring control with IoT connectivity 16
THE COMPLETE ARC TECHNOLOGY Leading the industry in Advanced Rooftop Unit Controls (ARC) REDUCES OVERALL HVAC ENERGY USE 25%-50% Transforms HVAC assets into smart machines delivering an intelligent solution for RTUs that give you greater control to extend the benefits of your current investments even further. Variable Speed Drive: The Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) provides savings through supply fan control. Advanced Economizer Control: Reduces the compressor runtime to improve efficiency and reduce wear and tear. CO 2 -Based Demand Control Ventilation: Makes the most of the available outside air for cooling while ensuring proper ventilation. Multiple New Sensors & Data Points: Maintain comfort levels and indoor air quality. Qualifies for Incentives: Widespread support of ARC technology enables financial incentives to reduce capital cost. 17
ENTERPRISE VISIBILITY ARCs perform best with remote control and oversight via a web-based platform. Here are some examples of the eiq Platform which ties into the CATALYST ARC technology.
FAULT DETECTION DIAGNOSTICS WHAT YOU DON T KNOW IS HURTING YOU Economizers Proper economizer operation is important for efficiency and space pressurization control. Energy savings and longer equipment life from less compressor runtime when economizers remain functional. Effective economizer control and fault detection requires a full compliment of sensors and dynamic control of dampers not present with typical BAS. CA Title 24 now requires economizer FDD
FAULT DETECTION DIAGNOSTICS WHAT YOU DON T KNOW IS HURTING YOU Economizers Can Save Up To 37% of Compressor Usage IF They Work Multiple studies have shown economizers are rarely in proper working order. 38% of dampers are inoperable. 46% have a controller or sensor failure 30% have improper settings Overall economizer dysfunction averages 60%
