16 Conservation of Biodiversity (case: awards & grants) Biodiversity Award In order to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, two awards have been inaugurated. They are a domestic prize, the Japan Awards for Biodiversity, and an international one, the MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity. And they honor excellent projects in alternate years. Assisting Environmental Activities Since its establishment, the Aeon Environmental Foundation has awarded grants for activities related to sustainable use and the preservation of biodiversity in Japan and overseas. In fiscal 2016, million yen was awarded to 99 organizations. It is aimed for the students to take an interest in environment and develop the ability to think. 30 Addressing Social Issues(realizing a Sustainable Supply Chain ) 3Making contributions to an international society - Fairtrade - Responding to customers desire to do something through their purchases for the world s underprivileged, we began developing and marketing Fairtrade-certified coffee, chocolate and other products in We participated in the Fairtrade Sourcing Programs in January 2014 as the first Asian company. We plan to increase the purchase of Fairtrade-certified cocoa up to 10 times more than the current trade volume by *Fairtrade : A mechanism of trading that supports producers independence by buying products continually at fair prices from weak producers in developing countries instead of donations. 30
