OCSD Collection Odor and Corrosion Control Program Minimize regional sewer system odor impacts to residences and businesses Reduce odor complaints from collection systems and treatment plants Extend the useful life of the regional collection assets, reduce corrosion potential Optimize and integrate odor control program in the collection system with the two treatment plants Support an active capital improvement program

OCSD Collection LOS Goals Collections Odor Levels of Service Goals: Number of odor complaints attributable to OCSD collections system 12 per year Collection system within 24 hour response target 100% This is achieved through specific targets of: Controlling vapor H2S levels less than 25 ppm daily average Controlling liquid phase dissolved sulfide concentrations to 0.5 mg/l based upon daily average

Collection System Background OCSD Collection System: 572 miles of interceptor and trunk sewer lines 15 pump stations; 8,700 manholes Collection system value: $3 billion Annual maintenance cost: ~ $30 million Chemical pretreatment: ~ $6.4 million Sewer Trunk Treatment Method Mode Miller Holder Ferrous Chloride + Ferrous Chloride Continuous Dosing Baker Main Ferrous Chloride Continuous Dosing Newport Magnesium Hydroxide + Calcium Nitrate + Calcium Nitrate Continuous Dosing Knott Magnesium Hydroxide + Ferrous Chloride + Ferrous Chloride Continuous Dosing Euclid Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing Santa Ana Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing Bushard Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing Newhope Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing SARI Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing Sunflower Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing Coast Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Batch Dosing

Objectives One objective is to prove the underlying concept, the cost and operational efficacy of the program for controlling H2S and odors with injection of calcium nitrate at GGSD owned and operated Tiffany PS located in the City of Garden Grove which discharges into OCSD Miller Holder System. Another objective developed under performance will be gauged by reducing sporadic vapor H2S excursions generated from Tiffany PS and along the forcemain discharge before flows combines into the Miller Holder trunkline and downstream into Plant No. 2. achieving consistent vapor H2S levels of < 25 ppm.

Liquid Phase Odor Control Technologies Calcium Nitrate Prevent the formation of sulfides by providing an alternative electron acceptor for SRB. SRB preferentially reduce oxygen, nitrate, and sulfate in that order. Therefore, as long as enough oxygen or nitrate is in solution, sulfate conversion to sulfide will be minimized. Nitrate is available in both liquid and dry form as sodium nitrate (NaNO3) or, more commonly, calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2).
