4 Project Mingde Update Progress of on-going projects The construction work of the current project, Dabao Tun Community and Cultural Centre, is well underway with 95% of the concrete structure having completed till now. Construction activities related to internal finishes, preparation of bamboo for the bamboo walls as well as earthwork for basketball court and surrounding landscape features have begun since mid-november However, the wet and frosty weather in winter has made the transportation of required materials difficult. As a result, the work on site was suspended in mid-december It is planned to have the construction work resumed in early March If there is no abnormal weather condition in the region, it is also envisaged that the project can be completed within 3 to 4 months. During the period from September 2014 to February 2015, the Project Team had paid 3 visits* to the site to check the progress of the construction work and to discuss the existing and potential problems with the contractor. Students performing measurement and examining the strength of the concrete walls A new potential project, the construction of a new village school in Sancun Village, has been identified by the Project Team and the feasibility study has started in August Students have visited the site and conducted land surveying as well as discussed with the villagers. The background sections of the feasibility report are being drafted, and these sections should provide useful information about the Sancun Village, local perspective, and engineering constraints and considerations. The campaign included two events: a 30-hour low carbon contest and a 6-day Low Carbon Journey. Dickson and Anthony visited the Mega Solar in Osaka. It is the Japan s largest solar power plant, providing electricity for about 3,000 households 6

8 Hyakudanen, one of the distinctive feature in Awaji Yumebutai, has 100 square-size flower beds which were built on exploited slopes In the first half of the campaign, our team had to complete a series of low carbon tasks. During the marathon, we can practice low carbon living in different ways, such as riding a bicycle to checkpoints, collecting recycled materials, making environmentally friendly musical instruments. Further, we had an opportunity to promote low carbon lifestyle to public by games, encouraging them to fulfill low carbon lifestyle in their daily lives. The most unforgettable experience in this 30-hour contest was the camping in Gilwell Campsite. In the camp, the host provided us an organic cleaning agent, Camellia Seeds Powder, to replace inorganic detergent and shampoo for washing our cutlery and hair respectively. This powder not only can alleviate water pollution, but also reduce carbon footprint due to traditional cleansing. In the second part of the campaign, our team had a chance to participate in a visit tour to Japan, learning and practicing new low carbon ideas and methods. As we are civil engineering students, we would be more interested in attractions related to our discipline, particularly the technology and efficiency of those low carbon attractions. For instance, the environmental education center in Kyoto designed a ventilation plan to increase efficiency of airconditioning system, and also installed green wall and green roof to reduce energy consumption. Newsletter by The most impressive infrastructure that we visited is the Awaji Yumebutai on Awaji-shima Island, which is a complex of memorial park, conference center and hotel. It is also an excellent example showing the co-existence of economic development and environmental protection. Rocks and soil had been excavated from the mountains for land reclamation. In order to achieve a sustainable development, the government had proposed the Awaji Yumebutai project to restore the original ecology of the island. They had designed to build a series of ascending terraces on the exploited slope, and planted flowers and herbs on those terraces. This project eventually reconstructed the nature beauty and ecology of the island successfully, and also has brought an economic growth to the island through tourism and travelling business. Moreover, the design of the rainwater drainage system in Awaji Yumebutai is remarkable as well. They use the system to collect rain and use them for recreational and irrigation purpose, reducing the amount of freshwater supplied by other areas. Through engaging in these two events, we have practiced low carbon lifestyle, and broadened our horizon through visiting infrastructures with lots of eco-friendly concepts in Japan. We wish that everyone can protect and cherish our environment by our own means. Meanwhile, as a civil engineer, we can practice low carbon lifestyle in our field, such as consuming resources wisely, and improving the efficiency of recent technology or machinery. Hopefully, our society and environment will be much more sustainable if we adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
