6 1) Pump as Turbine (PAT) at Mardan, KP Why PAT. Standard pump units, when operated in reverse are advantageous over turbines for micro-hydroelectric power generation. In pump; the flow of water acts against gravity whereas in case of turbine the flow of water acts along gravity. Pumps as mass-produced, are available for a wide range of heads and flows at considerably lower cost and with shorter delivery times than the equivalent turbines. Spare parts are easily available. Given the right conditions, PAT s can be used over the range normally covered by multi-jet Pelton turbines, cross flow turbines and small Francis turbines.

7 1) Pump as Turbine (PAT) at Mardan, KP First ever Pump as turbine testing in Pakistan was carried out by GIK Institute at KSB Pumps 25/09/2017 7

8 Why PAT. Standard pump units, when operated in reverse are advantageous over turbines for micro-hydroelectric power generation.
