1 Rain water harvesting system for latur district(maharashtra) 1 Mohammad Sahil Choudhari, 2 Suresh Savaram Choudhary ABSTRACT:- Water is life. This is the universe truth. But this truth was earlier denied by every person. Now when they are facing the problem of water being lesser day by day, they have started to think are this problem. Rain water harvesting is the best AlterNet source of water. This is the way which helps collecting water during rain time and this is a really an essay way also wan the entire world is facing the problem if water scarcity, this roof top water harvesting system has snatched there attention. This is the high time when we have to make plan and design something from which we can collect water and satisfy the increasing water demand encouraging of water or more sustainable basis. The rain water harvesting is the simple method of collecting rain water. This is the way has been going of since ancient time. This method doesn t cost too much but affect a lot. The present study tells us that now the people have begun to think about water collecting and giving water harvesting top most case. Latur district of Maharashtra is gravely affected by molasses and concentrated chemical in surface as well as in ground water. The present study finds its utility in developing cognizance towards wise use of water among masses and efficient ways to harvest roof top rain water resources at educational or multistoried building in latur district Key words: Rain water harvesting, Roof top, multistoried I. INTRODUCTION: Who can imagine few decades before that the world will have to suffer this paucity of water earlier the scenario was different and now it has changed completely. people never value the use of water they never thought that they world have to buy water in future. The time changed itself and now its time of real difficulty so it s the time when its exchange value is given importance. The number of people who will suffer in future because of the scarcity of water is really alarming by 2050 more then that people would live under condition of high water stress. If we talk about the sufficiency of rain, that it not a big deal to say that its not on time and not sufficient. most of industries are depend on it and they also suffer a lot. TCET Mumbai united nations environment programme (UNEP) Warns water could prove to be a limited factor for a development in a number of reason in the world. if we talk about India s rain it gets only 90% of its rain fall during the summer monsoon season, which is not sufficient. it last by the month of September after that there is hardly any rain because of this thing India can make use of more than 20% of its stored fresh water resources. rain water harvesting has been there practice for more than 3 or 4thousand years. Its an important water source in many areas whether its urban or rural. Its also way of future passport.it is also good option in the areas where good quality fresh surface water or ground water is lacking. study area contain molasses and highly concentrated chemicals in water. In the latur district there are some area block affected by molasses and chemical in water. study area is found so many educational building and multistoried building having likely roof top catchment where harvesting can be appropriately done. II. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:- 1. To elevate roof top rain water harvesting system. 2. To examine the reduction in water related problems and pollution. 3. To examine the uses of educational or multistoried for rain water harvesting. STUDY AREA:- Latur district lies south east of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The district of latur in Maharashtra has historical custom. 1

2 India Maharashtra Latur III. IMPORTANT STATISTICS :- Population Area sq.km Villages Taluka -10 Annual Rainfall 725 mm avg. Literacy-96.76% Town 7 Normal household Institutional household IV. MAJOR GROUND WATER PROBLEMS AND ISSUES :- The entire district comes under drought area. In major parts of the district, falling/declining water level trends have been observed in almost entire Nilanga, Ausa, Latur and Renapur talukas and northern part of areas also coincide with deeper premonsoon water levels in the range of 10 to 20 m bgl. The taluka categorised as Semi-Critical viz., Latur as well as Ausa, Nilanga, Chakur and Renapur, talukas where the stage of ground water development has already reached about 70% or more also coincide with the deeper water level and declining trend areas. Ground water quality is adversely affected by nitrate contamination. V. METHODOLOGY :. In this survey a descriptive field survey method was performed by considering informant interviews. in this survey to know about the potential towards rooftop rain water harvesting, the area covering by Ganjgolai market, municipality, Latur City,Ranapoor which consisted 9 multistoried which including flats 12 residential, 15 schools and 9 corporate rooftop rain water harvesting were studied with help of focus group discussion transect walk also other essential details from various offices where collected. Preventing flooding of roads. Increasing demand for water should be fulfilled. To make a control on decreasing ground water level and to increase ground water storage. To prevent ground water pollution and to supply fresh water in area which is molasses and concentrated chemical affected area. To not only increase that ground water level but also improving the quality of it. To make water available during summer drought etc. PLACE /BUILDING where rooftop rain water harvesting system should be installed in study area:- In study area found so many which have large potential of roof top rain water harvesting. Educational Official Multistoried Residential Spiritual building Anganwari school, Primary school, Higher Secondary school Madrasah,CBSE school, ICSE school, Colleges, Nursing college, Etc. Latur municipal corporation, DM, BDO, Railway, Hospital, Panchayat, Post office, Police station, Electric office, historical place. Shopping complex, Hotel, Restaurant, Flat. House, Hotel,Porterhouse Temple,Church, Mosque Ahmadpur and southern part of Udgir taluka. These 2

3 Roof top rain water harvesting in school building Roof top water Collection TYPES OF RAIN WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM: The rain water harvesting system can be classified into 3 elements. They are the collection system, conveyance system and the storage system. Collection system can differ from simple type i.e. within the household to a bigger type that is a large area which contributes to an impounding reservoir from which the water is gravitated or pumped to water treatment plants. the classification of rain water harvesting system also depend on factor like size and nature of the areas from where its collected and where does the area lie that is urban or rural. SIMPLEROOF TOPWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM : In a study area under total normal household is The collection of rain water by thousands or even millions of household is more significant than the collection of rain water done by a single household.the material and the degree of sophistication depend upon the initial capital investment. In some case, the harvested rain water may be filtered and in the other cases the rain water may be this infected. LARGER SYSTEM FOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS /OFFICIAL BULDING : When the collection system larger than it become more complicated.for example rain water collection from the roof and grounds of institution storage in under ground reservoirs, treatment & Roof top rain water harvesting in multistoried building then use for non-potable application in a study the total area under institutional building(excluding schools) were 432 where they have huge potential of rain water harvesting. COMPONANTS OF ROOF TOP RAIN WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM : Roof top harvesting system are usually created to support the drinking & cocking needs of the family of the society in the study the rain water harvesting should help todrink fresh water to the people living in the area which affected by pollution in addition to rain water harvesting system a bulding or institution should have first flush system to divert the dirty water which contains debris, collected on the roof during non rainy periods and also a filter unit to remove debris and contaminants before water enters the storage tank. 3 Roof catchment Gutters Drain pipe Down pipe First flushing Filter unit Storage tank Pump unit Recharge unit Out late tab ESTIMATED AVERAGE COST OF INSTALING A WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM:- An individual house of average area of sq.meter the average cost will be around Rs. A recharge well will be constructed near the

4 borewell. The roof water transfer from roof to recharge well through PVC pipe. An apartment building the cost around Rs. But cost will be low as compare to other place installation because many people share the cost. An institution building with campus the cost was near about 2-3 lac.here 1-2 recharge well and 2-3 trenches cum percolation pits were constructed. A colony the cost will be minimum. For instance around 38 recharge well were installed at the cost of 6-7 lac. PER YEAR AVERAGE MAINTENANACE COST :- Average maintenance cost annually would be around Rs. For two laborers once or twice in year to remove the pebbles and replace the send from trenches. First flush system FIRST FLUSH SYSTEM : First flush system is valve which is constructed so that runoff from the first spell of rain instead of getting entering the system gets flushed out.the reason behind such a valve construction is because large amount of pollutants from air and catchment surface are being carried by first spell of rain. First flush system is an important component of filtering system because it decreases load on filters by preventing the entry of large amount debris in storage tank. FILTTER MEDIA : As rain water being the purest form of water known to all but it gets impure when it travel though the atmosphere due to the dust particles or other impurities which exist in atmosphere. apart from the atmospheric impurities water also gets impure due to organic and inorganic impurities which are present on roof top so it is essential to remove the impurities from the affected water and hence to purify or to remove suspended pollutants from water collected over roof filter is used. Filter are of various type and can be classified on the basis of extant of purification of water sodiffrent type of filter are : 1. Charcoal filter : Basically a simple charcoal filter can be made with the help of drum or an earthen pot. This type of filter easiest and cheapest method as it is easy to construct it and it is made of easily available materials like gravel, sand and charcoal. 2. Sand filter Charcoal filter Sand filter are expansive as the main filter media is commonly available and are also easy to construct.sand filter can be easily constructed domestically. the basic objective of constructing this filter is to remove turbidity colourand micro organism from affected water. sand filter comprises top layer of course sand and followed by a gravel layer of thickness of 5-10 mm followed by another layer of gravel and boulders of thickness 5-25 cm sand filter can be tow types 1. Horizontal roughing filter and slow sand filter 2. Dewas filters. CONCLUSION :- Roof-top rain water harvesting can be best in latur district as it has huge potential of it. They has an integrated system that utilize full potential of rooftop rain water that recharge or increases ground water level even after satisfying existing water supply.in Latur district according to survey studied area is affected by molasses and concentrated chemical,so using this system of rain water harvesting helps to provide drinking water for affected area too, As these also prove useful for rural school or educational institution.institution to be encouraged for practicing these useful step of rooftop rain water harvesting on their respective building which would help meeting their own demand by themselves and help to encourage the development of an appreciation for these essential and precious resource. 4
