The Project About us Energean is an independent E&P Company focused in the Eastern Mediterranean with a production track record in Greece of more than 36 years Energean s Principles regarding Environment and Society: Activity with low to zero environmental footprint Supporting local communities Repsol is an energy company operating across the entire energy value chain with significant experience and global activity Repsol employs more than 24,000 people in almost 40 countries. The Project Our Mission To fulfill our work commitment under the Lease Agreement with the Greek Government Acquisition and processing of a Geophysical Survey (400km) Geophysical surveying is a well-established technique that provides an image of the subsurface by using pressure waves The geophysical technique provides geologists with an image of the subsurface, just as the ultrasound technique provides doctors with an image of the body s interior Repsol and its Hellenic partner want to maximize the potential of Greek energy resources and to create national and local wealth Operations are carried out in accordance with the European and national laws and regulations, with the approval of the Greek Parliament, applying the strictest safety and environmental practices Participating companies are Energean (40%) and Repsol (60%) Repsol is carrying out a geophysical survey during the next eight months in the municipalities of Souli, Igoumenitsa, Filiates, Zitsa, Dodoni, Zagori and Pogoni. Five (5) of them have already given permission for the survey to pass through municipality owned land.
The Project The Process Brief description A geophysical survey is a study used by exploration specialists as a tool to identify the geological conditions needed to have a potential accumulation of hydrocarbons (oil and/or gas) The seismic technique is based on pressure waves generated in the source point, these waves are reflected in the contact between different rock layers. The reflected waves traveled back to the surface where vey sensitive receivers (geophones) record them digitally. After the recording of these images there is a detailed final process followed by an Interpretation of the data. The interpretation could define structures or layers with potential accumulation of hydrocarbons (oil and/or gas). Step 1. De-mining and clearance of unexploded ordnance. Step 2. Surveying and line preparation. Step 3. Hole operations. Step 4. Layout of the recording equipment. Step 5. Loading and recording. Step 6. Collection of equipment and line restoration. Geophysical survey acquisition is a routine industry practice. A similar survey has been conducted in Epirus in the past (1997). It is monitored by an authorized environmental team to ensure that the Environmental Action Plan is enforced. The Project The Process Step 1. De-mining and clearance of unexplored ordance/remnants of war In order to ensure safe field operations, the Hellenic Army has been contracted to provide a mine clearance service. Unexploded ordnance has been identified and cleared already. This represents a lasting benefit to the Epirus region and local landowners. Step 2. Surveying and line preparation (regulated by government-approved Environmental Action Plan) The surveying team is monitored at all times by a team of environmental experts including Foresters, Biologists, Ornithologists, Archaeologists and Environmental Engineers. Step 3. Drilling operations The team uses portable equipment that is transported by either tractor or helicopter. The holes are made to a variable depth of approx. 8m to 20m. The environmental monitoring team is present at all times during the operation.
Step 4. Layout of the recording equipment Geophones are passive recording devices used to record pressure waves. The equipment is laid out in the field. Step 5. Loading and recording Once the survey equipment is deployed, approved and tested, the holes are loaded with a charge and the pressure waves produced are recorded. Noise and vibration levels are monitored at all times. Step 6. Collection of equipment and line remedation operations The survey lines are restored to their original condition. Restoration and re-forestation projects are undertaken after the recording equipment has been collected, all under the supervision of authorized environmental experts. The Project The Process During the survey, helicopters will be used to transport material and equipment. Helicopter use is controlled by strict International and Greek safety procedures. The use of helicopter will follow all the procedures and restrictions defined in the Environmental Action Plan. The Project Permitting The companies have applied and received the necessary permits required for the field operations Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment Baseline Environmental Report(s) Environmental Action Plan Archaeology Permit Greek Army (in addition, cooperation for the demining of the geophysical lines) Forestry Authorities (Forest Police Decisions and Installation Protocols) Permits for Accessing Municipality Owned Areas Permits for Accessing Privately Owned Areas Purchase, Transportation and use of Explosives
The Project In the Past This work leaves a negligible visible trace after survey completion. A similar geophysical project was carried out successfully in Ioannina during One line passed through the urban area of the city of Ioannina. Impact on farming land and forests is minimal. This line, acquired in 1997, is not identifiable today.
The Project In the Future The State granted the companies with the right to explore for up to seven years. 3 YEARS 2 YEARS 2 YEARS FIRST PHASE (I) SECOND PHASE (I) THIRD PHASE (I) 400 km Geophysical Survey 1 Exploration Well 1 Exploration Well At the end of the current phase (phase I) the companies will decide if the results merit a continuation into phase II of the exploration period (drilling one exploration well).
