2015 Sponsorship Opportunities Ecosystem Marketplace, an initiative of Forest Trends, is a leading source of news, data, and analytics on environmental markets and payments for ecosystem services, including investments in actions that mitigate carbon emissions, slow species loss, sustain supply chains, and protect or restore watersheds. We are committed to providing transparent, reliable, and usable information to everyone working to account for the climate, biodiversity, and water as fundamental parts of our economic system. The generosity and commitment of our sponsors allows us to explore new avenues and to make our research freely available to those at the cutting edge of developing these markets. This prospectus offers an overview of the exciting projects we re planning for To actually execute them, however, we ll need support from sponsors and stakeholders. Contact Ecosystem Marketplace Senior Associate Gloria Gonzalez (ggonzalez@ecosystemmarketplace.com) or (+1) ) for more information or to let us know what catches your eye. Sponsorship Benefits New in 2015: Shorter, more targeted reports The next generation of our website New research and data on global carbon offset buyers Deep regional dives: carbon markets in North America and water markets in China A platform that explains what corporate commitments to end deforestation are all about A close look at the impact of land-use carbon projects on people and ecosystems New thinking on the standards and certifications for watershed services A snapshot of biodiversity markets in 2015 Exposure: Ecosystem Marketplace s annual State of reports are consistently downloaded tens of thousands of times, and our news briefs reach 15,000 market participants every month. If you re a sponsor, you ll get your logo on our report cover (or inside, for supporters), and you ll receive special mention in our news briefs. Influence: Our research findings receive widespread media attention and are cited in official documents underpinning development of emerging ecosystem services markets, from South Africa to South Korea. Insight: We work with sponsors to make sure that our research is relevant to their decisionmaking, and we provide you with personalized break-downs of our data where we can. If you become a premium sponsor (or a sponsor who hosts an event), you ll be encouraged to offer your own insight as a panelist or moderator at one of our annual launch events.
2.0 Gen A Ecosystem Marketplace celebrates its 10 th anniversary in 2015, and Gen A is our secret code name for the next generation of our initiative. When we got our start, the idea of incorporating ecosystem services into markets at a global scale was a fairly new one, and information on this type of finance was scarce. Now, it s part of the lexicon, and we continue to be the group that pushes fluency in ecosystem markets to the next level teaching others the language. Since 2010, our specialized web portals EcosystemMarketplace.com, ForestCarbonPortal.com, and reddx.foresttrends.org (tracking expenditures to avoid deforestation) have drawn more than 1 million readers. Gen A will bring it all together. We imagine a new, GIS-based decision support tool that overlays our data on forests, cookstoves, biodiversity and water markets in a way that will allow project developers and funders to query investable opportunities. A map-driven dashboard will present layers of finance, project and program implementation, and policy information from the national to local scale. The platform will be sleek and usable but also rich in detail as we provide information about: conservation investment motivations, criteria, desired returns, and committed capital. Gen A will be part of a larger initiative by Forest Trends to both track and promote the emergence of impact investing in conservation as we continue to make the priceless valuable. Anticipated release: Summer 2015
CARBON Taking Stock of Corporate Demand for Voluntary Offsetting As businesses increasingly face risks from the impacts of climate change including the risk that a failure to act will set them behind competitors companies around the world are working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Many corporations are acting voluntarily, ahead of carbon regulation, and hundreds of them are investing in carbon offset projects to mitigate additional emissions beyond those they are directly cancelling out of their operations or supply chains. This research will combine data from Forest Trends Ecosystem Marketplace and CDP s corporate climate change disclosures to offer an inside view into the elusive demand side of the voluntary carbon market. The report will answer questions such as: Who are the top private sector buyers of carbon offsets? How does offsetting fit into companies overall carbon management strategies? What methods do offset-buying companies use to drive investment in emissions reduction activities? How have corporate perceptions of offsetting changed over time? Anticipated release: March 2015 North American Carbon Markets 2015 With the launch of California s cap-and-trade market in 2013, the state became the most active compliance market for carbon offsets in North America. Since then, important developments such as Washington s newly proposed carbon pricing program and the linkage of California s market with Quebec s open up the possibility for more robust compliance-driven demand. At the same time, voluntary buyers in North America are grappling with how to best meet their sustainability commitments in the context of tight budgets and upcoming carbon regulation. This report will offer an in-depth look at both compliance and voluntary carbon markets in Canada and the United States. We ll break down the North American demand for carbon offsets in 2014 according to price, project type, voluntary versus compliance, and where enough data is available by state or province. We ll also look forward to project how future policy developments such as the expansion of California s program to include new sectors will affect demand. Anticipated release: April 2015 State of the Voluntary Carbon Markets 2015: A Summary Even as countries and states around the world begin to implement carbon pricing policies, the voluntary carbon markets remain a space for innovation and a place for the private sector to act ahead of regulation, investing in projects that halt deforestation, produce wind or solar energy, capture methane from landfills, and more. For nearly a decade, Ecosystem Marketplace has kept the pulse of this market, collecting data about thousands of discrete transactions between buyers and sellers in order to provide transparent information on pricing and the ultimate climate impact of voluntary action. A more concise version of our previous State of report series, this summary will pack the same punch in terms of the depth of our data collection but present findings more visually, with key numbers easily accessible. We ll answer important questions about the 2014 market: What was the voluntary demand for offsets last year, and what motivated buyers? How did offset prices vary by project type, project location, standard, and other factors? What emerging trends should market participants have their eye on next? Anticipated release: May 2015
FORESTS State of the Forest Carbon Markets 2015: A Summary We know from five years of data collection through Ecosystem Marketplace that buyers have over the years paid a cumulative $1 billion for forest-based emissions reductions sequestering or avoiding the release of more than 32 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2013 alone. The majority of this action has been voluntary, but as we approach a historic moment in the international climate negotiations, these transactions serve as proof-of-concept for market-based forest carbon finance. A more concise version of our previous State of reports, this summary will pack the same punch in terms of the depth of our data collection but present findings more visually, with key numbers easily accessible. We ll answer important questions about the 2014 market: What is the demand for forest carbon offsets, and what motivates buyers? Where did project development surge or falter, and what drove market fluctuations? Which project types and carbon standards were most common? Anticipated release: July 2015 Forests in the Anthropocene: Impacts of Forest Carbon Markets Life in this new era of a thoroughly people-altered planet known as the Anthropocene comes with the understanding that, without active management, the key functions of the world s ecosystems may be lost. Ecosystem Marketplace s annual survey of the forest carbon market has for the past five years captured the climate impact of this market in terms of tonnes of emissions reductions financed. But over the years we ve also found that project developers are also talking about the impacts of their projects on people and ecosystems impacts such as job creation, land tenure reform, endangered species protection, climate change adaptation, and watershed protection. Finding ways to verify these impacts is a key challenge and opportunity, especially as governments are poised to commit billions to protecting forests over the next few years. Important questions remain: What units should be used to quantify beyond carbon benefits? What is the demand for verified co-benefits? How can these impacts be tracked over time? This report will expand on Ecosystem Marketplace s annual global survey of the forest carbon markets to explore these questions. Anticipated release: September 2015 Supply Change Countless corporations are committing to reduce the deforestation impacts of the commodities they produce and procure. However, there is currently no source of aggregate, multi-market information on who is making commitments, progress toward those commitments, and their impact. This is why Forest Trends Ecosystem Marketplace is launching a new project Supply Change to fill this data gap, providing businesses, investors, governments, and non-profits active in this space with real time information on corporate action on deforestation-free commodities. Through conversations with many stakeholders interested in corporate commitments over the past year, we recognized the need for an online platform capturing and contextualizing zero deforestation commitments. In response, we are launching in early An introductory report will provide deeper analysis, and the website will evolve over the course of the year as we track corporate progress towards eliminating deforestation from their supply chains. Anticipated release: Website launch in February 2015, updated dynamically throughout the year
WATER Getting What You Pay For: Standards and Certifications for Water In the carbon and (to a lesser extent) biodiversity markets, standards and certifications (S&C) for offset projects have emerged in the last decade to guide project design, ensure a common basis for transactions, and provide assurances to buyers, investors and regulators regarding a project s quality. Now, S&C are emerging to guide measurement and management of projects enhancing and protecting watershed services, such as groundwater recharge or agricultural water conservation. But some critics worry that S&C will lead to a Kyoto-ization of water, or that the use of purely volumetric offsets for water-related impacts could oversimplify hydrological complexities. It is a critical time for a community of practice to engage on questions such as: What metrics should S&C focus on? When are offsets and labelling appropriate? What is the proper role of verification? How can S&C be applied to supply chain issues? Ecosystem Marketplace, in partnership with the Forest Trends Water Initiative, will convene S&C developers, practitioners, decision-makers, and leaders from other ecosystem markets to discuss these issues and move toward consensus on core principles. Proposed programming includes a webinar series, insight booklet and expert workshop. Anticipated release: June 2015 March 2016 BIODIVERSITY Taking Stock of Biodiversity Markets and Compensation in 2015 Industry and government interest in compensation for biodiversity impacts has grown steadily over the past decade valued at $2.4-$4 billion in 2011 and in recent years emerging in countries from France to Chile to Mongolia. Yet little global synthesis exists on the scale, scope, and track record of biodiversity mitigation and offsets. This report will offer a high-level update on the development of biodiversity markets around the world. The report will answer questions such as: How much has the market grown? What are the major trends in the policy and regulatory arena? How has the emerging role of the private sector in scaling up performance-based biodiversity conservation altered the landscape? This report, the latest in Ecosystem Marketplace s State of Biodiversity Markets report series will offer a much-needed benchmark of global developments. Anticipated release: September 2015
